This blows my mind!

Postby Mathmagic » Tue Oct 09, 2007 12:15 am UTC

Which way is this girl spinning?

Image

Is she spinning clockwise or counter-clockwise?

Spoiler:
Apparently, if you see her spinning counter-clockwise, you use the left side of your brain more (the sciency/mathy side), and if you see here spinning clockwise, you use the right side of your brain (liberal arts/creative/Ra^H^H^H^HBelial side).

Anyway, I guess we can deem this thread the "This blows my mind!" thread, for all things amazing and incredible.

And yes, I know there was something like this in Logic Puzzles, but this isn't a puzzle; it's warping reality!

Ok, I don't get it, is she not very obviously spinning clockwise? Until someone promises me that they see it as counter clockwise I'll remain entirely dubious as to how mind blowing this is.

I cannot not see her spinning counterclockwise. I usually can with this sort of thing.

The more I look at it, the more I see visual cues that indicate that she is, in fact, spinning clockwise and only clockwise.

I can see absolutely no way that she could be spinning clockwise.

I see her one way if I'm looking directly at her, and the other way when I look away slightly.

Fun with eyes and brains!

Edit: oooh, and it turns out I can keep her spinning the way I want her to. It's hard to shift without looking away and unfocusing slightly, but I can. Good brain!

Are... are you guys serious?

I see her spinning counter-clockwise. The solid evidence is there: the shadow beneath her is rotating counter-clockwise...

Wow, this is cool! Now we just have to wait for our skeptical to drop by the general forum. :o

(Unfortunately, those guys don't really like the General forum all that much. :( )

When I see her going clockwise, if I look at the shadow beneath her, she pops back into counter-clockwise.

I have the feeling this should be hurting my head, but it isn't.

How can you see her go clockwise? I mean, which bits of her are going clockwise? I can't see it at all.

Focus on her standing foot with one eye closed. Slightly defocus, if need be. I can get myself to see her spinning the other way, but only if I try hard. Her other foot throws it off.

See, I don't get how you guys can see it turning clockwise; the arms, legs, and shadow all move counter-clockwise... I just can't convince myself otherwise! It's the physicist in me! :P

Ok, no, I'm sorry but I am absolutely not getting any sort of counter clockwiseness at all. Her right foot is drawing a circle in a clockwise direction, it doesn't matter how long I look at it, or how much squinting or peripheral vision I implement, it's totally clockwise. Maybe I'm just broken.

Finally got it to go clockwise, then it wouldn't go counterclockwise anymore for a while. Now I think my world is back to normal. It's time to go home, but I'm not sure I feel safe driving.

Ahhhhhhhhhhhh, I started studying the shadow to see what all the fuss was about and noticed the shadow was moving counter clockwise and now so is the girl and I can't get her back to clockwise again. Have I just been turned from my liberal artsyness to sciencedom?!? Say it ain't so. This is the danger of xkcd.

It's because in looking at the shadow you moved your eyes away and unfocused a bit. When I finally get her to go clockwise, the shadow also goes clockwise.

The shadow and girl are moving neither way. It's a silhouette. People, stop looking for clues as to which way she's actually moving. There's no right answer.

Okay, it's very obvious what's happening here, she's obviously just moving clockwise and counter at her discretion...don't be fooled, this is no optical illusion, merely a fickle spinner.

Ok, I tried and tried to see her going counterclockwise, and couldn't do it. Then I focused only on the shadow, and suddenly she switched, and now I can't get her to go back to clockwise. I'm really unnerved by this, as she's moving a lot more and seems a lot less stable going counterclockwise, and I really want her to be clockwise again. Grrrrr. I know I'm not scientifically inclined, and it's very disconcerting when that part of my brain asserts itself.

Edit: Ok, I got her going clockwise again. now don't mess with me, guys!

What are you talking about? It's a 3-d representation, but just with no distinguishable characteristics except for shape.

EDIT: It seems like people see her going counter-clockise (the *actual* way she's spinning :P ) after looking at the shadow. That's because it's very obvious as to where the shadow is coming from and going to.

I can get her to spin either way.

To switch from clockwise to counterclockwise, I keep her in my peripheral vision for a moment.
To switch from counterclockwise to clockwise, I do a Hiro Nakamura impression.

Clockwise was first, though.

I see her spinning counter-clockwise and no matter how hard I try, I can't see it any other way. Which is weird, because I think I'm pretty balanced in my brain powers.

Okay, I can get her to spin counter-clockwise if I focus on the shadow, kinda. The second I look up it goes back to clockwise.

Which makes no sense. I'm very strongly left-brained. Why am I seeing it move clockwise?

Wait, from which point of view are you observing the clock-iness of her spinning? from the top down or the bottom up?

Because for me, the shadow is moving counter-clockwise along the ground, but I guess that means the foot is actually moving... clockwise? If you turn her so her head is pointing in the -Z direction (right-handed coordinate system), she would be turning clockwise.

She's spinning in a... wait, sorry, what? I was distracted by the silhouette's prominent nipples.

Great. Just like there is no spoon. Next thing i know, you're going to offer me a blue and a red pill!

Anyway, i see her spinning clockwise. The description sounds about right, too, although i think it's worth pointing out that us right-brained people can be mathematical, too. I seem to recall reading that right-brained math is mostly the spatial stuff. Ah, yes. Wiki tells me it is so, and if it's a wiki article, it must be true.

I see clockwise, and I'm quite left-brained. If I lean in and focus on her foot, I can get her to spin counter-clockwise, but as soon as I blink, she goes back to clockwise. Odd.

This is great. I've gotten to where I can switch fairly easily between them (though I started with clockwise). What I do is that I look at her in my peripheral vision, and then follow her foot. I just first imagine it going straight left and right, then add in the back and forth movement that corresponds to whatever direction I want her to go in. Then relook at her, and voila.

EDIT: My head hurts now... a lot.

I don't view it in terms of "clockwise" or "counterclockwise", because of the angle: that's like looking at an analog clock with your eyes parallel to the plane on which the hands move and determining between clockwise or counterclockwise. I see her turning to her left.

Does everybody see her turning to her left?
Serious? What's that?

I can see her spinning both ways, and I can actually switch between the two fairly easily. Basically, when I look down at the shadow, she changes directions, it doesn't matter which way.

I suppose the better testament to which side of the brain I'm using is that, when I look at it, it always starts out counter-clockwise.

Yayy! I managed to get them to switch.

I feel smart now.

But, the first time I looked at it, it was counter-clockwise.

EDIT: It's harder to switch from counter to clockwise, and easier, vice versa. So yeah, counter is definitely the easier way for me to see it.

I've seen her spinning both ways (counter first), but the shadow did nothing for me. When I looked at it, it was doing exactly what a shadow should.

No, it was her right arm (and the odd positioning thereof) that allowed me to change between clockwise and counter-.

After some focusing on the leg in the center, I started seeing it doing 90-degree sweeps back and forth while the rest of her continued to spin in full circles.

And now I've got a headache.
