Stop changing avatars...

Postby Gelsamel » Sat Oct 27, 2007 5:38 pm UTC

... for fucks sake. I tell who people are by their avatars and everyone keeps changing them.

"Wth who is this? Oh it's <insert regular>"

Is my avatar like the only one that hasn't changed this whole time?

And with that I'm going to sleep...

I got bored of my old one and this is more fitting to my mood. Deal with it.

And I think everyone finds this one better than my old one:
Cheese4.jpg
Cheese4.jpg (5.56 KiB) Viewed 4011 times
and the spamless one before that. But I think this one'll stay for a fair while.

Yes, avatar changes are confusing, but it's the same with sigs - I often look at a signature's general layout/colour to check the poster, instead of their avatar.

EDIT: to fix attatchment to the correct one.

Combination of Sig, avatar, and post style to tell who people are, I can generally get to the point where I know who's talking just by how they type.

I sooo want to change my avatar now, just because of this apparently warranting its own thread...but I can't imagine I'd have another picture of myself that would deserve this title...

So make one! There's always a way to make a more erotic picture that isn't in reality erotic.

changing of avatars can have two possible results in my mind

- gradually getting used to the avatar (only happens if I've seen a lot of that person in General. So Insig Dei and Cheese are in the clear)
- Hey! New person! (I really don't know who, thus proving the point..)

Cara is an edge case for me. Too early to adapt, too late to be reset..

Well it can also be forgiven if one avatar is being changed out for a hotter one. Like Insig's one. So if Cara changed hers to one that was really hot I wouldn't be opposed.

Basically: Don't change your avatar if it doesn't benefit me... bitches.

I know him/her/it only because they sigged me a while ago, I can't remember what their avatar was originally though.

My forum name rather restricts what I can choose as my avatar so I'm keeping the best hobo picture I could find and occaisionally changing it for special occaisions (like pirate day/halloween/birthday/christmas and possibly more!).

I've gotten to the point where I acknowledge that in order to be perceived as a human, I need some retarded sketch, image or dancing annoyance next to my name.

Heavens knows we've never judged people on names or content. We *need* a visual that has nothing to do with the person!

I don't judge people by their avatar. I just associate their avatar with them in visual memory, so when I look at their post, I go "Oh hey, who is this? Oh, right, it's the guy with the dancing frog by his name. I remember the dancing frog. He also posted a long diatribe about how Caligula wasn't really that bad a guy when you think about it."

Without an image, I mostly get "His name sounds vaguely familiar. Meh"

I recognize who posted in this order: Avatar, Sig, Title (if applicable), Name. As such, while I recognize the names of most of the big posters, I rarely actually think of them, and just go by the avatar. So while it screws me up, I can usually remember who a person is after they change their avatar and get used to their new one. It's still annoying though.

And seriously, what the hell else goes with a name like 'solt'?

Also, thanks for not changing your avatar, Gelsamel. It's one small piece of sanity in this crazy world of changing .gifs and .jpegs.

I'm very reluctantly thinking of changing mine. I chose the one below because of its historical significance and my grandiose thinking that I can pass on something important to the nerds of the future. But I also posted a link to an image of the entire keyset, and someone promptly photoshopped their own avatar from other parts of it, and now mine doesn't feel unique. Hell, I was inspired by Hawknc's "SCIENCE" avatar, so I can't say I blame the other guy, but I don't want this one anymore, and I probably should abandon grandiose thinking, eh? I just want to find one that I like, that says something at least to me, and that has a chance of not being copied, and that I can stick with for a while (tending to infinity).
