funny and tired and stuff

Postby Ashbash » Tue Nov 27, 2007 4:22 am UTC

Why on earth are things so much funnier when you're tired? It makes no sense but it's so true!

Trying to think of some examples...

Oh yeah. The most obvious one. When I first found xkcd (after googling "pointless waste of time" when I was supposed to be writing some essay), it was 3 o'clock in the morning, and I read every damn one. From the beginning. Hilarious.

Lolcats. Pure ecstasy.

Lame your mum jokes. I mean the lame ones.
"Hey can you open the door?"
"Your mum's a door!"
All of a sudden they become funny. And not just funny. Gut bustingly hilarious. And the effect is multiplied when you're lying down.

Why?

I call that "being too tired to go to bed."

Playing the one word story game a few years back, and we came up with the sentence: Rabbits fucking mosquitoes viciously.
We were laughing uncontrollably for about 15 minutes, one kid nearly passed out because he couldn't breathe.

Yep. In this state any kind of herbal tea becomes a potent drug.
The 'funniest' thing Corinna and I ever came up with was after we worked together from 10:00 to 06:00 (straight through), she was 'on' tea, I 'on' berry juice and tryptophan - we slept three hours after that and went on with work. Damn, we're hard core! :D

Now, here's the funny thing:
He: I had an erotic dream last night. You were part of it.
She: *coos* That's sweet. *purrs* What did I... do?
He: Nothing much. You held the sheep.

I suspect that when you're tired enough 1) You don't over think things, so illogical stuff and non sequitors seem funnier, and 2) I think you drop some of your inhibitions when you're tired because they take up too much energy, so things that normally you wouldn't laugh at because "you're not like that" become hilarious.

I think it might actually be simpler than that. Well, simpler if you think that chemistry is simpler than psychology.

Sleep deprivation has some pretty profound physical effects. There are obvious things like bags under your eyes, but it also does stuff to other organs, including the brain.

I don't think it's terribly unlikely that somewhere during the process of not sleeping when you should your brain starts producing some chemical that, back when we were cavemen, would have made us more likely to just lie the fuck down and take a nap already, but now makes us giggle like assholes. Ah, evolution, what would we do without you?
As long as I am alive and well I will continue to feel strongly about prose style, to love the surface of the earth, and to take pleasure in scraps of useless information.

video games with friends
conversations with friends
4chan
and other various internexpeditions

i seem to recall an instance where my friend and i were entertained well into the morning simply because of how pissed off and ferocious young link is...

Same effect as drunkenness. Your brain is slower and all things are humor.

But when you're drunk you don't get to watch it happen.

Or remember it.

Wouldn't all the laughing keep you up too? Unless you pass out though.

I'm awful at SSB. I'm usually the idiot that will walk herself off the side of the board because I lost my character. But I love it all the same. :) If someone's Link or Young Link, I'll pick the appropriate opposite and stalk them the entire match going "Why're you hitting yourself? Why're you hitting yourself?"

I'm wonderful at link, but I blow as young link. No idea why. Although, it's been ages since I last played, so I probably suck now.
