Board's Geo IQ

Postby aerojad » Fri Nov 30, 2007 7:31 pm UTC

One of my nerdities: geography.

Traveler IQ quiz: http://www.travelpod.com/traveler-iq/game1?aae9=485b

Some of the questions, especially the later rounds, are surprisingly not dumb.

I got through 11 of 12 rounds, 446,261 points.

This is almost as addictive as Free Rice.

I'm embarrassed to post my score, I thought I knew much more than that. >_<

That was fun. I played twice. I sucked it hard on level 8.

I got within 100 km a couple of times. I think I could have done better with a better mouse.

Gosh, I'm awful at this. My knowledge of European and Asian geography is good, but when it comes to Africa and the America's I haven't got a clue. I'm too ashamed to post my score!

My best is:
540,499 pts
Level: 12
Trav. IQ: 130

However, that was when I used to play this quite a bit on facebook. My last game was quite a bit lower, 379,577. Africa pwns me. :-(

Also, I hate you for getting me stuck on doing this again.

I'm about the same as you. Sub Saharan Africa is made up of whole countries I know nothing about. It wouldn't allow me to proceed because I only scored 295,000 or so. So near, yet so far.

Ugh. I did it a few times and I lost on level 10 every time. I did get within 6 km of St. Petersburg, though. And 15 of Calgary. I fail Africa, like pretty much everyone else.
Then I thought, "Man, I should have just said 'yeah.' "

I beat the SNOT out of the Pacific Island nations - I got within 15 miles of every one it asked me about. But I'm pretty sure it kept asking me about African nations that don't exist. And I kept getting the *stan nations confused. And I was playing with a trackpad, so I occasionally clicked when I was trying to move the mouse, and my accuracy was terrible because of the trackpad. I also misread "Swaziland" as "Switzerland" and just assumed it was some city I'd never heard of in Switzerland.

Made it to level 10, 264k.

Oh my god, level 5. This is US lack-of-geography-teaching mixed with my inability to learn where anything in the Middle East is besides Iraq and Saudi Arabia. And how they kept asking me random Chinese landmarks... I know where CHINA is, just nothing within them!

*Goes back to try again* Maybe I'll learn something from this.

I'm doing alright on it, those obscure African cities and countries are killing me. They have some pretty interesting facts at the bottom which I just noticed. I've made it up to level 6 at my best, geography never was a strong suit.

I got to level 10, 393K score and 114 IQ.

The Caribbean nations, random Pacific Islands, and a couple of the African nations owned me. Going back to try again...

Ah god. I can't imagine even trying this on anywhere other than Canada. And Canada is friggen huge! I swear I can barely keep the provinces straight on a time limit, let alone guess where cities I've never heard of are....

I keep dying around the time they hit BC. It's a mountain range that's hundreds of miles away, I don't know where specific peaks are. I just barely know where Vancouver and Victoria are. And I only got through Quebec because I know where th bulk of the Canadian population lives.

This page is infuriating. I know precisely where Tallinn, Perth and Manchester are, so stop getting stuck when I try to click on the precise pixel representing that city on the tiny map of the world, you cheapo mouse! Grr.

My weak points are North America and parts of central Africa; I can do most of the countries around the coast, but those arbitrary ex-colonial patches of land that are mostly desert? No idea...

Once I'd solved the mouse issue, I managed 467,772 on the worldwide one. I bet I'll do better at the Euro one, purely because it's easier to click accurately!

Just almost 400k on the world one. So very much fun. I got to level 8 on my first try, but since then I've beaten 10.

Too much fun! Owned in lvl 10, IQ:111.

For me...
US: Excellent
Europe: Pretty darn good
South America: Very Good
Central America: Ok
Mideast: OK
Africa: Screwed
Southeast Asia: Really Bad
Canada: Wow, I suck
Asia: Meh...ok

I kept getting pwned by stupid European nations that still have random colonies. Also, I'm not surprised that my dear American nation is ranked 121st, behind such highly educated nations as Rwanda, Burkina Faso, and Ethiopia...far too many of my peers still can't find Iraq after occupying it for six years.

Level 10 is what I got up to. 410,147 score (my lucky number, no less), and 116 IQ.

Sometimes, mouse-accuracy got me on some places I could easily identify... including several places that I'd actually been to. But, that was only a minor part. What really got me were some of the islands in the Pacific and Indian oceans. Come on, those oceans are big, and I can't identify exactly where in the blue Vanuatu is!

Otherwise, it was pretty fun. I'll try this again sometime.

EDIT: Photos of the World is pretty fun, too! I got up to Level 5.

I was doing great at all of them until it got to "Natural Photos". I can recognize man-made buildings and everything, but the only "Natural" photo I could recognize was Mt. Fuji.

I also noticed one of the photos was badly-labeled {^^}. KF

I got Tokyo within 19km. I'm assuming you mean on World Mode (since the individual regions zoom in).

I tried again and got up to Level 11. New TIQ is 122.

What killed me this time were all the large countries. Russia is a friggin' huge country; I'm not gonna be able to nail where Yekeratinburg is within 200km. Oh, and all the Australian islands, too. KF

IQ 112
My worst miss was a guess that suriname was in Southeast Asia...
It's in South America apparently. I was a bit off.
I'm gonna try again.

Edit: 406,309 and 116 second time

Edit #2: Hell yes, after glancing over a map of Africa (and eating a burrito) I tried again, this time getting
546,917
finished level 12
IQ 130

Didn't get to level six...I'm hopeless at geography, and I panic when working under a time limit which makes matters even worse...really anywhere outside Western Europe is pretty much alien to me. The more well known States I might have some idea of, the same with the African nations, but heavens I've not got a clue of Asia and Eastern Europe...especially all the new countries that were once part of the Soviet bloc.

I managed to get somewhere on the Ontario map within 3 km (Don't remember where, precisely). I also got somewhere in Newfoundland within 9 km, from the Canada map.

I can hit Toronto within 50 km normally too.
