What did you learn this year?

Postby Kithplana » Fri Dec 14, 2007 5:12 pm UTC

It's almost the end of the year blah blah blah, so I was wondering.

January: ...if there was anything of note, I can't remember. Almost a year ago now, y'know.
February: People are foul, cruel, vile, backstabbing creatures.
March: A heckuvalotta money goes into college...
April: There's a lot of weird, useless crap to remember for the A+ certification.
May: People are foul, cruel, vile, backstabbing creatures. Still. Again. (At this point all but one of the non-family people I knew and cared about to some extent had betrayed me in some manner or another.)
June: College is kinda fun. I'm still the smartest person in the class.
July: ...Not everyone is foul, cruel, vile, and backstabbing. (It involved parole officers with street cred.)
August: College is fun, and I don't have to be the Token Girl in all of my tech classes.
September: I care too much. Also, Counterstrike.
October: While people are foul, cruel, vile, backstabbing creatures, some people are additionally horrible, pathetic, coprocranial, miserable excuses for parents, colossal wastes of flesh, head stuffed so far up their rectum they can see out their nipples, A-HOLES.
November: There's a name for some people, and that name is anxious/ambivalent, preoccupied, or any combination of those words. There's a name for some other people, and that's abusive. Also, in a family of black sheep there can be some white sheep too.
December: Wanting something doesn't necessarily make it real. http://www.xkcd.com/352/

So there's what I learned. Not as bad a year as it sounds, considering the latter months' people-doing-nasty-things didn't happen to me personally, and I did start college.

Still, though, it hurts to be backstabbed. Here's to 2008 having higher highs, more moderate lows, and people who wouldn't betray me if their chocolate depended on it. If the person who I talk about the most here is reading this, stop Googling me. I don't Google you.

I have absolutely no intention of going through each month of this year, but I can tell you what 2007 taught me.

Look out for yourself. Before ANYONE else, look out for yourself.

I have problems keeping to this but I think 2007 was the first year in which I have actually managed to put myself before anyone else, and I am a much happier person for it. I'm not saying I treat people like shit, so much as I finally have managed to cultivate and exercise self respect and a little bit of self esteem.

I'd say, a good year. A very good year, actually.

This year I learned that there exist people who love all people unconditionally. They are truly great, and the world would be a better place if we emulated them.

Also: I've been making a bigger deal out of life than it actually is.

I also learned that Johannes Kepler had some bizarre ideas about music, specifically intervals. For example, "the action of reaching from mi up to fa simulated a male ejaculation" and "the minor third is passive; it tends to sink toward the ground like a hen preparing to be mounted by a cock." Yeah. Just a tad weird.

Janurary: 3 months of holidays is really boring.
Feburary: 4 months of holidays is worse.
March: I can't remember any of these peoples' names...
April: I learned what a real LAN party was like as opposed to one with just a few friends. The main difference it that theres more pizza.
May: Towel day: people dont actually notice that much if you carry a towel around all day.
June: more holidays, learned nothing (profound anyway)!
July: There are even more holidays? Wow.
August: 4 hour maths classes at night are not worth attending
September: This new job is seriously messing up my study
October onwards.... I dunno, I was trying to sleep but had work and study. recently I've been making a 3D ninja so I learned quite a bit about anatomy anyway.

I learned that smart people can be complete idiots. Just give them boredom and an excuse.

My view is not the only correct one, even if it is the most scientific way. Its not even necessarily a good one.

If people have been fighting over something, there is something to it, that makes it hard to solve, its not that one side are idiots.

January/February: Probably nothing useful as I can't remember anything (useful).
February/March: Staying up all night, sleeping during the day and eating unhealthy food can be really fun if you've got friends doing the same.
April: I can't cry, no matter how much I want to.
May: I learned to remember what crying feels like, but still can't cry.
June: Doing absolutely nothing for a month makes you both anxious to do stuff, and too lazy to do anything.
July: It's possible to have both a really great time and a really crappy time at the same time.
August: University is different than highschool.
September: Java
October: Python
November: Nothing, really.
December: Hopefully enough math to pass my exam in two days.

Technically? Electronics, Materials Science, Engrish, Dynamics, Thermo, Fluids, Mechanics, and Controls. Did I really? Just hope you never use anything I ever design in the above fields. Hell, at this point I'm not sure I've ever learned anything.

In this year I have learned:

*Commuting to college from home, rather than getting university housing, sucks, and doesn't help you make friends.

*Iron Maiden is an awesome band and it's a shame I didn't start listening to them a long time ago.

*I am exactly the sort of annoying Japanophile who I made fun of about two years ago. This is, I imagine, akin to the phenomenon of fundamentalist Christian preachers who denounce homosexuality turning out to be gay themselves.

*Integrals are fun! :D

*Either I am an excellent writer, or the quality of the average college student's writing is poor enough to make me look good by comparison. Either way, it's good for me.

Things I learned:
- My heart heals much faster than I would ever suspect. Encouraging.
- There is no guarantee that I won't be facing the same problems in my life now when I'm 70. Discouraging.
- I like working hard.
- I am not totally undesirable. I still waffle back and forth on this one, but I feel better about myself now than I ever have since I was 14.
- There are people who like and appreciate who I am, not just what I can do for them.
- I am one of the luckiest people I know.

- An awful lot about weddings, the people involved with them, the extortion that is the wedding industry, and myself and my partner.
- Not enough about aircraft structures. Oops.
- On a related tangent: faculty administrations are not always the heartless automatons they are often made out to be. (That said, I'm glad to never have to deal with them again.)
- I'm employable. That one was a bit of a shock.
- Your grand road map for the rest of your life doesn't mean squat.

Hmm. Busy year.

January - I really can organize, correlate and summarize more data on a computer than can fit in uncompressed form on the hard drive. And it only takes a week per run.

February - How much my 2 year old (now 3) son loves playing in puddles.

March - Where and when to go with my son so he can see tractors and bulldozers at the beach.

April - That some people who left for another job really want to work with me again. Even if it means creating a Perl position at a Java shop. (I do reporting, so I'm somewhat independent of everyone else. But still.)

May - That I want to go work with my old co-workers.

June - Exactly how bad a mess systems are at my new job.

July - My wife and I can still get pregnant. :D

August - I finally hit the spot on the productivity curve where I can start getting ahead of the backlog of requests.

September - That my son likes preschool. Also that the next (and last!) will be a girl.

October - That I hate pulling marketing lists for holiday promotions. But I'll do it anyways.

November - That I should really read all of the xkcd comics. And then I got involved in the forums.

December - I really hate losing a tooth. (A back molar. Damage from the wisdom tooth had left a cavity under the gum on the backside of the tooth. The cavity was growing and was entirely untreatable because of its size and depth. Yes, I am in pain right now...)

January: Friends are awesome
February: Being taken completely by surprise by a lover and realizing you love them too is AWESOME!
March: People need to learn to stop trying to convert others into copies of themselves. It doesn't work and just breeds resentment.
April: I thought I loved my parents despite everything, but realized I don't. At all.
May: Lying is really really hard.
June: Sex <3. Also, intricate and high-risk plans paying off is sweet.
July: XKCD is pretty cool.
August: There are many things I'm actually good for. Helping with my SO's immune system, for example.
September: Having fish on a regular basis really helps with the cramps.
October: Super-long-term PMS is such a bitch.
November: Being legally obligated to only one person, and loving that person, makes life so much simpler.
December: Anticipation. Is. Intoxicating.

Congratulations on your engagment! (Assuming I read the tea leaves correctly on that one.) If your wedding is still to come and you live near the beach, I'd suggest a beach wedding. The big selling point is that it really calms kids down when they slip out of their chairs and are in a big sand lot. (I speak from experience here. I recently had a kid at a beach wedding.)

About your cramps, have you tried the pressure point for that? What you do is take a "fat pinch" on your ankle between your Achilles tendon and your bone. By "fat pinch" I mean lay your thumb down one side, and your finger up the other so that you get a big, long area being pinched.

It doesn't stop the pain but it helps. And it works best if you can someone else do it to both ankles at once. (That's what your SO is for...)

Due to my status as a special needs child, we cannot legally marry until... the ninth of June... 2012. Until that time, She has full legal guardianship.

In fact, we live less than 20 miles from the beach. There won't be children, and it won't be a big fancy wedding. Really, just a civil ceremony with friends (and with Her parents if they're still alive).

As for the cramps, that's interesting and I haven't tried that. Do you mean menstrual or calves?

Um. If you're saying what I think you're saying, you shouldn't say it at all in public.

I meant menstrual. There is probably some pressure point for calves, but I have no clue where it is.

For cramps in general, massage and warmth locally is good, and eating the right foods will help.

January: Having a piece on the side is kinda fun.
February: Please, for the love of everything, go to sleep every now and then. Sure, she's cute and wants to do things to you. But you need sleep.
March: Brains shorting out is not a good thing.

May: You can get a job just by sitting in the right place at the right time.
June: Bawls is good stuff.
July: Indians speak better English than Americans.
August: The sun is generally a good thing. Don't live such that you never see it.
September: Don't fuck with your meds.
October: Not having weekends can wear you down, drive you insane, and give you a fucking heart attack at 23.
November: Your time is more important than money.
December: Do your damn homework, you idiot.

Interestingly, I went from being very uncomfortable with C++ to being quite fluent in it within that time, now that I think about it. Certainly, it does seem like it's been a bit longer.

And my heart was filled with mournng, mourning for my dear amour.

I think you are saying that you're a minor who got your gf declared to be your legal guardian so you can live with her even though you're well below the legal age of consent in whatever place you happen to be living.

If this is true and is discovered by the wrong person, it could result in serious problems for you and your gf. If they can prove it, potentially including jail time for her.

Personally I hope things work out for you. This is clearly a consensual situation, and I know multiple couples who got together young and work well in the long term. However the odds are seriously against you. I'm sure you know that but don't care at the moment.

On the contrary, I am above the legal age of consent and She is considered an adult (despite being only two months my senior). Further, She was declared my legal guardian for medical reasons (the person you live with as a special needs child/dependent/etc must have legal control over your medical decisions, as anyone else will not be aware of the changing needs), essentially, we didn't even have to ask, just bring it to their attention.

Further, you say the odds are against us, and they are. More than you know. But to say that as a warning is not to consider who we are. You really don't know who we are, so I don't blame you.

January - funerals for 22 year old guys who die of heart conditions in their sleep are weird.
Feb. - Miscarriages suck.
March - D&C's suck. Also, Funerals suck.
April - Funerals Suck.
May - I don't remember.
June - Funerals Suck. Apparently it's also normal for a woman to go three or four months without menstruating after a miscarriage. Who knew? Oh, Chicago traffic can go fuck itself.
July - Yeah, I still don't like heat.
August - Was there an August? Oh, right.. company likes me enough to promote me.
September - Since I can now come in later due to said promotion, I'm now rediscovering that I go to work about the same time that school buses roll around. Fuck school buses.
October - Masks + Glasses = Bad idea.
November - Funerals Suck
December - I'm regressing emotionally to 16 or going crazy or something. Huzzah!

Whoa! How many funerals did you wind up going to this year? Is this work related? Because if not, then my sincere condolences.
