Nerdy/Cool Art?

Postby umbrae » Sun Jan 06, 2008 9:44 pm UTC

Anyone have any suggestions for some nerdy and/or cool art? I'm moving into my new apartment (in Manhattan! Woo) and I'm looking to fill it up with some cool stuff.

Also, I figured this would just be a good thread in general. Any suggestions?

Escher is indeed badassery. I'm also up for any amateur artists that you guys might know that have stuff for sale on the intertubes.

All credit for this link goes to Kineticka, who posted it in the 'Too much focus' thread. It is, however, awesome geek art.

This is a picture someone posted at another forum I go to. All credit goes to the original artist, blah blah blah.

Linky

I hope that link works...

Love the first and last.

Whats with the price though? $100 for a large print seems a bit absurd, particularly when spyroteknik sells the same creation packaged with 11 others for $25 in a calender. I'd quite like to have those on my wall some day, but for $100... meh. Particularly since it seems Alexius leaves the bit in the bottom right on the prints? Makes it hard to call it art. Its way too obtrusive.

I definitely agree Fossa - and if you happen to find another site with excellent 'amateur' art that sells for cheaper, let me know.

But also - to use a meme - large print is laaarrrge. I'd probably stick to 20x20 or some such.

I also really like Exit Scene because living in NYC, sometimes I feel a bit like it's me against the world - which I feel like the piece encapsulates very well.

If you're into Tolkein, some of Ted Nasmith's work is pretty cool.

H.R Giger. I bought a 3 poster pack on ebay (the one containing the poster of his original alien), put them up around my room. Their pretty kick ass if your looking for some very dark gothic type geeky stuff.

I like some Dali myself. I have "Swans reflecting Elephants" on my wall in here, it gets comments all the time.

ParanoidDrone, do you know anything else about that picture? It is made of awesome and I'd like to know more about it/the artist.

http://www.explodingdog.com has some very intriguing art. My favorite is http://www.explodingdog.com/january2/sc ... ailme.html . He takes phrases that people send in and makes surreal pictures inspired by them.

http://www.etsy.com/

dunno if there's anything nerdy there, but it's a page where everyone can sell their handcrafted stuff, and i've seen some cool artwork there while browsing..

edit: i just noticed they have a "geekery"-category.. http://www.etsy.com/category_top.php?top_tag=geekery

I think the name of the author's website (emroca.com) is in the corner. I personally know nothing about it (other than the obvious "That is so badass.").

And I want my own copy of it too. ;_;

EDIT: Artist, not author. *smacks self*

Ursula Vernon. Really cool animals and things. She does a webcomic also, but you need to pay for it.

I'd recomend something by Chris Foss.
He's the guy who designed eg. the Nebuchandnessar for the Alien movie.
I've got a bound art collection at home but I'm sure he's got a webpage as well.

So I went looking for this thread in order to find that piece I liked by spyro only to remember why I didn't get it in the first place (the price is rather absurd for a print). Now I can't help but wondering if, after all this time, anyone has anything else to add to this thread. Particularly some more affordable nerdy/cool art would be nice.

Come on people, I have an apartment to decorate here!
