People are only trying to make you feel happy so they'll feel happy! OH NO!!!

Isn't that the definition of being a nice person?

I must admit to feeling rather ambivalent about today and the whole concept of St. Valentines Day (everyone forgets the first bit! )

I have gone through several different feelings about it over the past few years. I went through the phase of just ignoring it, pretending it was just another day. This was easier when it was a weekend, as I didn't have to go anywhere and see people throwing their relationships in my face. As an aside, I'm quite happy for anyone who has a special someone, I don't even mind PDA's, but it doesn't stop me feeling bad about it when I wasn't in a relationship.

One year, my mate and I went Speed Dating on Valentines day (think it was two years ago). This was great, as you could guarantee to meet other people who are in a similar boat to you! I even managed to meet someone and go on a few dates with them, but it didn't last.

This year, I am finally in a relationship on this day, and on the run up I was terrified! I had no idea how far my girlfriend was expecting me to go in terms of flowers, presents, dinner etc. Just as I was about to broach the subject and discuss it with her, she brings it up and says she doesn't want to do anything. Half of me was relieved that there was no pressure, but I was also disappointed. I did want this day to be something quite special, as I had seen other people treating it in all of those years before.

So tonight I'm sitting at home, on my own, with a glass of wine, on the interblag, writing to a bunch of people who i don't know about all of this stuff! it's extremely cathartic, i recommend a good rant if you're not with anyone special today it helps!

(apologies for the rant, I hope there was a point in there somewhere!)

I managed to make a date for today without actually realising it was Valentine's Day. I had to tell her that actually, I didn't want to make it anything special, but I'd still want to see her. She says "Yeah, me too! Glad you think like that" I feel relieved. The day comes, and she says she can't come over. I feel strangely disappointed. Even though I didn't want to do anything particularly special, to be stood up on Valentine's Day is still rather depressing. Any other day I wouldn't have been bothered.

I am happy today, as with all the couples either having sex upstairs or... well with just them all having sex upstairs, I had the TV with no-one bitching at me as they didn't like what I liked.

I am extra happy as I found my anti-valentines day sentiment shirt this morning ( I though I'd lost it as it is now my tradition to wear it.) here is a poor quality photo of the design on the front.

Are you female? If so, sure; otherwise we'll just have to be friends. I'll send you a giant teddy bear anyway:

So, my boyfriend totally ruined Valentine's day by giving me a teddy bear. I TOLD HIM I DIDN'T WANT ANYTHING! It's a tacky teddy bear, too.

Guys, so you know, "I don't want you to get me anything" doesn't necessarily mean "I don't want you to feel obligated, but if you don't get me something, I will be quite disgruntled with you." Sometimes you actually can take what the womenfolk say at face value.

First of all, women have no idea what they want. You are certainly welcome to your delusions, but believe me, you don't know.

Second, be happy! He was thinking of you, isn't that a pretty good sentiment?

If it weren't for my love of fashion and penis, I would have gotten a sex change already. I'm not a very womanly woman, and I know exactly what I want. And I didn't want him to get me anything because:

1.) We're both broke
2.) I just don't like Valentine's Day on general principle
3.) I didn't get him anything, and now I feel like he expects me to.

Plus, a teddy bear? He would have been better off downloading and burning me some porn.

Whoa dude, chill out. I mean, at least you talked to a girl at least once this entire week. That's something I can frankly not admit to doing.

Today was a terrible day, probably the worst day I've had all years. Luckily I'm past the stage of emotionally flooding any forums in my cyber-vicinity, however.

Remember, some people have it worse off than you. I mean, at least you had a girlfriend, right? :)

Wow... I just realized after reading your post, how I almost never talk to girls... Just a few minutes ago was the first time I've said anything to a girl outside my family all week, and she was just a friend of my sister.

Unfortunately, all too often guys find themselves in the situation of girls saying "I don't want anything" when they mean "You had better get me something or we're not having sex for a month." The few girls (like you) who actually say what you gorram mean have the rest of the females to blame for training us to think this way.

Since that particular big teddy bear is a polar bear, you could make quite a nuanced statement of opposition to current environmental policies by dousing it in gasoline and lighting it on fire in the middle of the US Senate floor.

"This is what you are doing to polar bears, you silly ivory-tower-dwelling, carbon-dioxide-emission-ignoring, oil-lobby-appeasing politicians!"

It occurs to me that this thread no longer has anything to do with the original post. So I'll just attempt to make a bridge back by saying: "El Senor Fruit Swing" is a really bizarre userid. (I mean this in a good way.)

You have conversations?!?! It's probably been years since I've had a conversation with a girl... My extent of conversing with the opposite gender is "Hey", and responding if they ask me a question.

toooday was aweeesome! i bought roses for my boy, then made him chocolate chip pancakes that spelled out "I <3 U" and took him out to lunch. BBQ!!!! we both ate WAY TOO MUCH. then he took me to a candy store that also had icecream and i ate way too much icecream and he bought a box of chocolates despite my dieting protests. i made him promise to eat most of them himself. then he told me he has a gift on the way, but it wont be here for a couple of days.

WHAT IS IT?! i didnt ask for anything?!?! he knows i dont require or look forward to tangible gifts, but i'm SOOO CURIOUS!

When I say "I don't want anything" it means I don't need, want or expect the boy to buy me anything. I do want him to spend time with me and tell me I'm awesome, probably share food and lolz and sexytimes with me.

If you insist.

The safety phrase is "Rubber Haberdasher"

Someone in the paranormal forum has another name for it:

Singles Awareness Day.

It makes sense, since it is the only holiday that makes singles realize just how alone in the world they truly are.

I'm actually anti-anti-anti-anti-valentines day. I see no reason to bitch about it anymore than any other holiday (goddamn Arbor Day), nor do I see any reason to be overly extravagant on the day. My girlfriend basiaclly agrees with the less extravagant part, so we ended up hanging out at home (also a good way to avoid the scads of other couples going to whatever they were doing).

I take the phrase "I don't want anything" to mean either they can't think of anything specific to request or are being polite. Of course if this is insisted I'll take it for what it is, and if I do get up anything I make sure it's something they personally like rather than a generic kind of gift.

Singles Awareness Day: I think it should be referred to by acronym, or is that just too mean?
