Regional variant correlation query

Postby NMcCoy » Wed Mar 05, 2008 7:16 am UTC

Inspired by some of the discussion of the latest strip. Yeah, maybe I'm a bit of a poll nut. I'm really curious though, given the classic soda/pop variation and the "what are you talking about"s in the comic discussion.

I would have chosen Soda/ Slug Bug, but then that would have made the otter cry...

Vast swaths of the South use the term coke. Thanks for the cultural sensitivity, poll maker. :-P

Soda isn't a term I use. Pop is in my vocabulary, but I normally refer to the carbonated sugary beverage I'm after rather than the general unifying term. Though fizzy drinks is probably more common in my conversations to soda/pop.

Punch buggy/slug bug isn't something we have specifically. I think over here they'd say Beetle (I mean, that's the VW car name isn't it?), but the common game is "Yellow Car punch", or other rarities.

So yeh, otter-duck.

Pop. Every right minded freedom loving all american farmer/astronaut knows it's pop. End of discussion.

Also, we usually say slug-uh-bug.

On a related note I've got a theory that the game known as puh-diddle is played in "pop" areas and called other things in other areas. Confirmation?

Ah, I'd forgotten about the "coke" option. Poll duly amended.
Edit: Eep, I didn't realize it'd clobber the existing votes. Sorry about that.

It's coke. Which sometimes causes confusion when it's a brand other then coke. Then it's called pop. Can I vote twice :P?
