*bump*
A couple of hours ago, I clicked a link to Episode 9 of "Freeman's Mind", and then realised I hadn't seen some of the previous episodes, so I watched it first. I was working my way back up to Episode 9 using the Related Videos list, but when I got back up to ep 9, I failed to wonder why the video preview image was a screenshot from the video rather than the standard Freeman's Mind logo. The reason being that it was a RickRoll. :( Oops. I didn't expect to be roll'd by Youtube recommendations.

I rickrolled the first and only Apple store in China. On opening day. Twice.

You know what would be awesome? A page that had javascript on it so you could set it to rickroll at a particular time - go through a store or computer lab or whatever, opening it and setting it all to the same time... synchronized rickrolls.

This year at the Georgia Beta Convention, when officers for next year were doing their campaign skits, two of the candidates' skit groups rickrolled the entire convention. The first was brilliant, but the second...wasn't, really.

Anyway, for that feat, I voted for the first one. It was well-deserved. Even though she eventually lost. :(

Massive Rick-Roll apparently planned by Comedy Central

Postby Internetmeme » Mon Jun 01, 2009 10:50 pm UTC

During every one of their commercials for "Tosh.0," they have been airing a clip of the dreaded Rickroll.

This only leads me to one conclusion:
The Tosh.0 show is planning a massive Rick-Roll of television Thursday@10:00.

This just happens to be the last day of school, so I'm staying late to watch this.

Who knows, maybe they will break a record for most people rick-rolled.

It wouldn't surprise me if Tosh.0 just recycles a bunch of old internet memes. I've only seen partial commercials for it while I'm waiting for something else to happen, but really. TV about dumb stuff on the internet? I have a whole dumb internet for that, on my own time.

I mean, Rickrolling was done when the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade got Rickroll'd. It was on network television and everything.

I'm somewhat hoping that it doesn't go the way that Dmitri Martin's show went. Instead of having time to come up with new jokes, he had to come up with new ones every week, and quality suffered.

I wonder when a bunch of /b/tards are going to invade Comedy Central's boards to spam them when they get mentioned on the show.

.... Okay. Somebody needs to hold an intervention for the TV people. Rickroll officially DIED on Thanksgiving of last year. It was in critical condition following April 1st of last year.

It's dead, buried, the insurance check is cleared, medical bills are all paid and is no longer anything but a loving memory of a good song that the kind of people who listen exclusively to Flo Rida inexplicably freaked out over, making it kind of funny to send them links to the music video.

What next? A mass lᴏlcat campaign?

Leave dead memes to rest, and certainly keep them off tv. If a meme is known well enough to make it on tv for the uneducated masses, it has no doubt been kicked out by the internet (save for maybe forums made up of angry 12 years olds (i.e. /b/)).

You know people who go "oh I can't believe you listen to Previously Obscure Possibly Indie Band X now they've gone mainstream, I liked them when they were still cool but now it's lame"? Pretty annoying, right?

Now reread this thread.

Hmm, to be honest I think this is reasonably unrelated.

All right, if you spend time on the internet, rick rolls might have been funny for a while, then after not too long they get tiresome. Much like having a large cake. Yes all is well and good for the first few slices, but soon enough you're throwing up creamy choclately goo that certainly isn't as attractive or tasty as it was the first time.

Yes, I do, but my point remains unchanged that the Internet has had cake now, and are maybe even quite sick of it. The rest of the world has just figured out cake, and are going "hey this looks pretty yum, I would like to try it". And the internet is all "ugh, I can't believe the world, that cake is *so* last year, like totally".

I don't actually mean to defend the Rickroll, I'm just saying, we appear to have some superiority complex thing going on regarding it.

I was rickrolled in a dream last night. By which I mean that song was playing in my parent's house, probably on tv, while I was in the kitchen with my sister, in a dream I had last night. Though I'm not really certain it actually was that song, but it was definitely 80s and I in the dream I came to the conclusion it was that song.

That's what I'm saying, we have our cake, and have devoured it so ravenously that it has led to long term sickness. Hence, any more "cake" will just lead to further vomit and anguish.
I understand how it seems like I was attacking the fact that some people with their brand new toy (as it were) find it funny.
I was agreeing that "we" (us internet folk) have a bit of a superiority complex about it but possibly with good reason....

(I wish rick rolls were actually cake that came out of the screen so I could gorge myself on it...)

This morning the radio rickrolled me. I woke up, listened to the news and then they used Never Gonna Give You Up as backing music during the weather. The announcers were so proud of themselves.

When I finish my scarf I'm wearing it to the abc offices. Or at least on TV.

Here's the most recent picture. Each row of words will have a line of the chorus.

I think I'm gonna make it a third yellow, then green, then blue. And the writing is not quite long enough, so I might stick a picture of Rick on the end for added awesome.

It is such a slow scarf to knit. I have sworn at it many times.

I was Rickrolled at a public karaoke event last year (and I know it was a deliberate 'roll, because why else would a kid pick that song *and then not know it*?)

But the local "Classic hits" radio station once announced among the songs they were going to play, "And then a Rickroll". And it wasn't the right Astley song. The temptation to ring up and tell the announcer that (a) I was probably the only person listening who would get the reference, and (b) he was doin it rong, was great. Although they have played NGGYU on occasion, too.

I have also written a line dance (yes, I know) to the song, complete with rolling turns, and given it the obvious name. If there are any actual line dancers out there, let me know and I'll send you a sheet :D

On two occasions now I've done NGGYU on karaoke evenings. Last October I took the microphone in this random pub in Cambridge on an engineers' pub crawl. The event was video'd and uploaded to facebook, the crowd went wild and I received many a handshake from randomers thanking me for rickrolling their evening. While vocal quality wasn't great, I think I had nailed the appropriate dancing style (casual swaying, hand jive and the occasional spin). 'Twas awesome.

Then two weeks ago at one of the Cambridge "May Balls", I hit the karaoke venue, at 5 in the morning [these events are all-night parties from 9pm, with a 'survivors' photo taken at 6am if you last through the night]. Performance was similarly recorded, by two cameramen on their iPhones this time. Some were standing thinking "wtf this ain't robbie williams angels or any of them other karaoke tunes", others sang along to the refrains. I made sure to end it by announcing in the microphone "Emma May Ball, you have been rickroll'd!" [Emma being abbreviation for Emmanuel College hosting the event]. Of course next year they'll expect me to do it again, so perhaps I should non-sequitur the non-sequitur...

The trick to rick-rolling karaoke is to do it in a group of people you know will get it, and- THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT!- do the dance that he does at the beginning of the video before you begin singing.
Just FYI, the guy isn't avatar isn't me. But he seems pretty cool.

One very bad remake of the music video on the announcements. Of course we do video announcements. Of course the kids that take our video class make things for it. Each week there is a new video. Tons have been funny. Then this one popped up. It was not received well and was the talk of the next class period.
