Someone has reminded me of The Game so incessantly irl that we agreed we couldn't lose it between us during lessons. It was going too far.

Side note: The Blackhole of Radio 1 would be good if you could get the presenter to say at the end of the song "You've just been rickrolled!".
All ~5 million or so listeners...
Anything I said pre-2014 that you want to quote me on, just run it past me to check I still agree with myself.

Have there been any radio rickrolls yet? (Say you're about to play some song, play Never Gonna Give You Up instead.) There should be.

Oh! oh! How about a movie-rickroll?
When this shiny new movie everybody wants to see gets out they do a special presentation the evening before.
After everyone is seated the movie begins and the makers names are shown but then they play rick astely. For the rest of the ~200 Minutes they show "You have just been RickRolled!" on the screen.

Me and the boy once called it in to Eighties Night on the local station. It was amusing. :p

That's not what rolling is. It's called a rickroll because it descends from the duckroll, which was a picture of a duck on wheels.

.....which was a non-sequitur response to a question, statement, or other and considered a trap. Hence the useage of Roll5. Or more likely, trick roll.

5 From the Urban Dictionary
Roll : To jump and/or rob. Comes from the Vietnam War era when American soldiers used to get rolled from behind when they were distracted. (When GI JOE would be doin' a hooker and get hit from behind by a club).

Trick Roll : When a prostitute robs a john.

Radio'rolled.

Postby Random832 » Sat May 31, 2008 9:25 pm UTC

I decided recently to turn on the radio. The station it was on was a commercial break so I tried several other stations. Ultimately I landed on "107.9 The Track" which plays a variety of music from the 70s, 80s, and 90s.

The song that had just started was none other than Rick Astley's 'Never Gonna Give You Up'.

You were not radiorolled. You were listening to a radio station that plays hit songs from the 80s, and a hit song from the 80s got played. If you were listening to a station that plays nothing but indie rock and Rick Astley started playing, then this thread might be warranted, but in your situation, it's all but guaranteed that it would get played at some point.

Do people just forget that the song was actually popular 20 years ago?

No, duh. Any time a song by Rick Astley is played, it's a rickroll.

As mentioned, the rickroll has to be a non-sequitur, it can't just be the song...

Anyway it's a shitty meme. Most others are much better.

I was flipping through various radio stations, and the song happened to be playing at that exact moment. Just because it's reasonable for the video or song to be played doesn't mean it's not a rickroll.

If CNN opened cold with the video as a lead-in to a segment about the phenomenon, would that not be rickrolling?

When Randall tricked us into decoding this comic into a MIDI, was that not a rickroll despite his well-documented fascination with the phenomenon?

If I told you about the youtube fad of arranging songs for Mario Paint and clone programs such as Mario Paint Composer, and linked to an example of the phenomenon, would that not be a rickroll despite the fact that it's a perfectly accurate description of the video I linked to?

A rickroll is tricking someone into hearing it. That was the essence of the meme. You post a youtube link, somone clicks on it, it's a rickroll. Thus:

Random832 wrote:I was flipping through various radio stations, and the song happened to be playing at that exact moment. Just because it's reasonable for the video or song to be played doesn't mean it's not a rickroll.

Yes it does

If CNN opened cold with the video as a lead-in to a segment about the phenomenon, would that not be rickrolling?

Nope.

That's a rickroll. We were tricked.

If I told you about the youtube fad of arranging songs for Mario Paint and clone programs such as Mario Paint Composer, and linked to an example of the phenomenon, would that not be a rickroll despite the fact that it's a perfectly accurate description of the video I linked to?

It's a rickroll if you linked to Never Gonna Give You Up specifically for the meme purposes.

It's all about the intent of the one getting people to listen to it.

Actually this happend. Tripple J in Australia once played the song haha only like a month back and I giggled. The morning crew play like a random request song for them to play while they read out the weather and one time it was Rick Astley!

I think the radio-rick-roll, or RRR (C) (R) TM Dobblesworth, 2008 would sound something like this:
Show Host: And now we're going to play the next track: the award-winning platinum-selling single by <Insert Generic R&B/Rap Artist / PopIdol/XFactor winner here>, <Insert random song name here by above artist that roughly fits criteria, alongside tremendous enthusiasm from show host/DJ>!!!

They (and I don't know who because I'm not observant) "played" it with a virtual keyboard, also known as a midi file.

Or something similar to that, all I know is I heard it played. As a midi.

Rickroll news (no links in this message, no worries)

Postby Aviatrix » Wed Aug 27, 2008 1:22 am UTC

A friend of mine, who is probably older than three or four of you put together, told me this a couple of days ago: "We just switched to AT&T U-verse (what bliss!) and we were looking at all the free shows on demand, and one of the kids followed a link to a supposed MTV stunt, and we were Rick Rolled."

After I got over (barely) hearing the term "rickroll" coming from her lips, it hit me that a major corporation is rickrolling people. That's just strange.

SecondTalon! Thanks for finding the rr thread for me... I couldn't find it when I posted the above. Poor search skills, I will try to improve.

I was once rickrolled in Joanne Fabrics. I laughed, but it was pretty clear nobody else in the store thought anything of it.

I've heard the song on the radio a couple times recently. I don't consider it a rickroll unless I was tricked into listening to it though.

They had it as one of the heavily-stylized covers on Spicks and Specks (a music quiz show on ABC (the Australian channel, not the American one)) last week (I think, maybe the week before)... Alan Brough had a rather sour look on his face when he figured it out.
