Missing Comic?

Postby stretch4x4 » Fri Apr 04, 2008 12:22 pm UTC

I think I am going crazy. A mate and I swear we remember reading a comic on xkcd about a character looking at captcha and saying something along the lines of 'well that proves it'. But after going through the whole collection of comics, neither of us can find it.

Has it been removed, are we blind or just plain crazy?

Hmm no I did not. Does that mean there is only one of each comic ever produced in circulation at any one time? And if so which nasty otter stole mine? :(

There have been a number of guest comics on other websites, it may have been one of those. However, I don't know if those are indexed anywhere.

Hmm I swear it was xkcd style and on this site but not being able to find it would suggest you are right and my memory wrong.

I wish I could find it, very subtle and clever.

This one is the only one I can recall that mentions a captcha.

Yeah I kept finding that one which is even more frustrating because the one I remember was very different and all my searches and links bring it up. :( thanks for trying though.

Sorry, can't help you.

Seems vaguely like one I've read, but not really. Maybe it was a paradoy of an xkcd comic? (I remember OC did one a while back, but I don't think thats it).

Yeah I don't read many other comics so I would have thought it was on here but you never know.

An alternative comment made by the character was 'I always knew it' it's frustrating that I can picture it and remember the gist of the joke but just cannot nail it down.

One of those things that is going to annoy me for a long time unless there is a genius out there.

After my previous post it is funny that you are the next person to reply no-genius :)

He's been waiting for that phrase to come up, since May 17th 2006.

Well, it's not 100%, but Oh No Robot is a fairly helpful webcomic search engine. You could try that?

Was it by any chance a CAPTCHA that spelled the word "retard"?

No joy with the search Goatboy but thanks for the suggestion. As for it saying retard, I am pretty sure it didn't.

It was just such a crazy captcha that it would be hard for any humans to read. Hence the characters thought that he is a bot.

Yay edit 3 wins the jackpot. You are a legend. That is the exact comic I was thinking of, no idea how I got to see it though??

Proves me wrong about thinking it was on xkcd. Cheers now I can stop worrying about it and enjoy the comic and I don't have to blame any otters. :D

Thanks Felstaff great work.

I grin every time I put what would be comic 404's URL into the URL bar. :D

I think Felstaff found what was being searched for, but if anyone wonders, A New CAPTCHA Approach (comic 233) is the only one I could find featuring a direct CAPTCHA reference.

The following reminded me of the above-posted comic:

Image

This is the first time in a while (since they stopped using ambiguous characters, I believe) that a CAPTCHA has made me sit and look at it for a measurable length of time, trying to work out what I was meant to type. It won't be long before I'm being banned from online communities.
This is a placeholder until I think of something more creative to put here.

That captcha wasn't that bad. I'm sure I've seen worse. Image captchas still don't seem to be as effective as two checkboxes, one claiming you are a bot (checked by default) and one claiming you aren't, not checked by default...then just store whether the user got it right in a cookie so they don't have to suffer everytime...

...but maybe that's just me.

Could someone please explain the "winning" comic? I'm afraid I failed to "get" it. All I see are unrecognizable "characters".

Unless that's the joke? :?

The joke is that CAPTCHAs are becoming so hard to read that genuine humans can't always read them; this one concludes that he's a bot.
