Might as well post mine while I'm here. There's a pretty-much-default panel hidden along the top edge of the screen, and docky along the bottom. I'm still not quite happy with the first handful of lines of conky, though, I'll probably keep screwing around with that for a while. Or possibly forever.

just in case you dont know this, when you install arch, it lets you choose what to install.
default is only "base" which means not much more than
*kernel and stuff
*drivers
*bash with some tools
*network stuff.. iwconfig dhcpd etc.
*pacman
then you go and just add what you want
*X11
*display manager (if you want)
*windowmanager or desktop
...
*userland stuff
