This is another that I've had for quite a while. It looks like some sort of random art, but flip it upside down to see what it actually is.


I'd show screenshots, but my desktop is boring and only has the recycle bin and the windows taskbar (vertical, left side, mostly transparent). I prefer to keep it bare.

I made the middle color a grey instead of black; it makes the overall contours sharper. I added parameterizations for the positive color, negative color, zero color, and infinity color, so now I can make it any colors I want.

I always keep the icons hidden, it looks so much cleaner that way.


And on the Linux (Ubuntu 10.04.4) side...

I have a transparent purple terminal window & Conky setup that look really nice with that background. But I'm on Windows right now and I'm not going to restart just to get a screenshot.

I guess I just kept putting it off. "Well I've got stuff I need to do right now, but next time I'll update it." I've probably thought that about a 100 times, and of course I never have. Besides, I'm on Windows most of the time. But I'll make sure to update it this week.

I'm not the one you asked but... why not? 10.04 came out after Windows 7. It's still fairly new (in terms of OSs) and has full support until April.

Kernel updates alone are a good reason, yeah you can do em yourself, but generally I can't find a reason to stick with an older version like the upcoming W8 vs W7 version of Sophie's choice.

Plus, Pangolin > Lynx!

Now, I do prefer .04 to .10 usually just for stability, but yeah, it's not like the XP vs Vista vs W7 vs W8 situation really, you can keep the parts you like of older versions.

SGI Irix 6.5.22 on my old Octane.

For some reason the icons in Irix are all vector-based. Why SGI thought that was a good idea in 1994 I do not know, but the wheel you can see on the left of the file browser lets you zoom in and out and everything stays sharp

My compute server runs IRIX, but it's headless and I only telnet into it... I haven't touched 4dwm in years... It was very slick for its day, if you like that sort of thing.

I like the dymaxion one myself, but I didn't code the wallpaper program, the script I had worked ok but not nearly as well as this one.

Edit: oh yeah, the weird stacking is due to the room constraints I have here, wound up with the old smaller monitor on a shorter table underneath the new one, the slight offset is to center the bit of distortion from the bottom screen having different pixel density which makes the mouse move across at a slightly different rate, I lined it up exactly as it is physically (with the bottom screen slightly offset to the left) but that makes the mouse "lag" from the pixels wind up centered near the bottom left corner of the top screen.
