Lots of people don't fall for this buillshit, but if the stores keep doing it, I guess it must work to some degree.

Black Friday Information?

Maybe. This is a difficult time for many people.
Black Friday is like the starting gun shot for a race to despair for many people.

Such pressure on people. Many collapse.
I surrender early and avoid the rush.

I give up on September 21st.
I start giving up on June 21st.
After June 21st, every day is shorter than the day before.

The mean bastards Save Time in Oct.
Is if life is not fucked up enough, they decide to Save Time in Oct??

On that day the length of daylight hours falls not by 10 minutes, but by an hour and ten minutes.
They have been saving time for a long time. Where is it? I think it might be nice to get into the savings.

***I have something to Rant about. It is not much, but it made me think.***

I was talking to a woman, out in public.
We were chatting about ideas.

"No." I said, "Those ideas came from BC 500."
She looked at me funny and said, "Were there people in BC 500?"

It made me think and say. "BC 500? Plato?" (I did not have an internet connection.)
I was not sure of the numbers. But; I was fairly sure in BC 500, people were people.

Pre-History, Ends When?
Then History starts up.

History begins when? When does it end?
What the fuck does History have to do with us?

Siding Spring's Mars visitation will also overlap with that of another Mars newcomer, NASA's Maven spacecraft.
To be launched this November, it will arrive at the Red Planet in late September 2014, with Comet Siding Spring set to make its closest approach to Mars on Oct. 19.

There is so much that I don't know.
I ask Wikipedia. Wikipedia knows a lot.

The article says Siding Spring will visit Mars.
Siding Spring is new to Mars, the planet.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Siding_Spring_Observatory

What? New to looking at the Red Planet or The Whole Ship is going on a journey? What?
Siding Spring is a place not a thing. No. It is a thing and a place? Of course; That can happen.

Then it says Siding Spring is the name of a comet.
They named it? ok.

Nothing bothers me about that, I wish.

In cities people look up and see The Star.
I think there might be children somewhere that think the Moon is a Star.

Why not? In a city. A mother loves the night sky there, too.
Into a park or down by the river they go.

The moon rises. They watch. It is like star gazing for near sighted people.
I can see stars with my unaided eyes. I was impressed.

As a child I would watch them come out.
I would stand beside the car in the depths of Winter, far from City Lights, in the deep dark and gaze up at the stars with my family.

When I got corrective lenses: It Rocked Star Gazing! When I could really see them. I got on my Grandmother's nerves.
Where? There? What is that? Where? Like mankind with a telescope.

Why does mankind look up?

Most people talk of habits or specifically bad habits as things like smoking or eating junk food or watching TV. But me, everything I do is just one habit after the other, always seeking something in the future that's never found, waiting for some future catalyst that never happens, and a constant sense of dread and unease. Do I even possess consciousness?

I tried that (sort of: group and individual therapy for many years). My fellow man now makes more sense, but perfect? Nope. We're all bundles of habits and neuroses, with the occasional, delightful flourish of art and wit.

Which ties in with Jave's post, sort of. "Direction" and "purpose" are often prescribed for combating dread and unease. They're hard to come by honestly. :|

Direction and Purpose? ok. That makes sense.
If I look at my fellow man using that lens, then maybe it will be better.

Judge that person not by its Direction and Purpose.
Judge that person worthy and ennobled by its direction and purpose.

Hey! It has a direction like a comet.
It has a purpose known only to it and God.

I will try that. I will let you know how it works out.

edit: Thank you. I think that helped.
Sometimes it is personal Direction and Purpose.
Other times is it the Direction and Purpose of the other.

Weird Story:
Spoiler:
I was driving along one of the most beautiful road ways with a stunning view of the Wide Pacific, a Crescent Moon and one Single Star.
The sky had gone from gold to red to pink to purple. The Ocean was a hard straight line at the horizon and quiet foam at the shore.

You know; Pretty. It is a pretty night and it is a Cold night.
The clear sky does not hold in heat. There was a lone figure with a bicycle on the road way. Walking, not riding.

I asked. I had to. "What are you doing?"
He told me he was looking for a camping place. I told him where there are good ones. I know some of that stuff.

He was mildly short tempered with me. Like a child. "Yes." He said, "That does not get me anything to eat."
The way he spoke to me would make a person think I was responsible for him. (fuck) Maybe, I am on some level.

He has a bike and camping gear. I don't.
I made arrangements with him to feed him, when he arrived in a town.

I did that. I did not take him into a warm shelter. He has eaten warm food. He has camping gear.
I gave him a orb shaped glass candle holder and candle. That thing really helps to keep a camper warm. I know! I have used it.

He has a direction and a purpose. I know the direction is real. I go that way, too; Sometimes.
His Purpose may be imaginary or it may be real. It is not for me to judge.

That man is going to be Cold. We talked about how to be warm on a cold night. He knows what he is talking about.

I know it will be a miserable night for him. He must, kind of, like it. maybe.
He told me, "Other people are boring." He is alone out there because other people bore him.

I have been camping in the cold. The last time I ended up 50 miles uphill past the end of the road; It was Cold.
I was there, because I find other people fun and fascinating. They are also dangerous. I had my gear. That man has his gear.

That depends. One might suppose that the act of questioning this behavior proves consciousness, but what if this questioning is just another example of your habitual habits?

Talking to people is sometimes a good idea.
I spoke to a human being. It stood up and sang this song.

It was a faithful rendition. I wonder if I could get it to do it, again?

It is! I do it frequently.

In Hindu and Buddhist philosophy there's the idea of karma or samsara, the great chain of cause and effect in which all beings are imprisoned with the exception of those who have attained Enlightenment or liberation. (I know of no such people, but I'm fairly confident if there are any, I am not one of them.) And this idea of being mechanical (as Ouspensky/Gurdjieff term it) or simply determinism makes me increasingly be fatalistic. I'm a drug addict and alcoholic and though I've not used or drank in 2 years, I've come to observe how the same mechanisms of habit and compulsion work in all things I do. Everything is a reaction, even feelings and thoughts. "A thought comes when it will, not when I will." And I'm coming to see even the idea of "myself" as just a kind of delusion that persists out of habit. I'm compelled to think I exist, I act, I choose. But I don't, and I don't. I just feel like I do.

The ultimate goal, aside from reaching Enlightenment, I think is to find a delusion that we like. Some find charitable work, some bury themselves in science or art or raising kids. Some go the God route.

I think I'm still looking, though music and learning about current science are working well enough so far.

Oh I don't *do* science. I read about the science that other, harder-working people have done.

Except when I'm in the bath. I do science then, like what's the optimum amount of soap to keep bubbles from popping.

oh. Bath tub science is great science.
Did you hang out in classrooms enough to learn the basics of research and the scientific method?

Science; Home science, lab science, BathTub science always starts with questions and always ends with questions.
Dinner is a good time to come up with fifty bathtub questions. Throw out the thirty dumbest ones.

Design methodology and start gathering equipment. Bathtubs can be so much fun.
How many people can you get in your tub? How many bicycles?

Both work.

I said, "I am beginning to understand that. It might be best to not think, much. None of this has anything to do with you. Does it?"
Some Old Bastard did not like me saying that. He went after me.

As I was leaving the building that Old Bastard followed me. I heard him, or someone coming up on me, fast.
I got to the door, opened it and held it; Like a polite person would.

That Old Bastard sort of frightened me. What? Did he want to have a fist fight in the Alley?
He was all pissed off about something. I am not in great shape. I may not have been able to take him.

Ah, lawyers.

Yes, lawyers. Because one title commitment for a small-ish shopping center isn't enough, they add a second one, because it is better business for each lawyer involved to involve other lawyers at $1000/per hour, so they can waste their clients' money. Oh, and not telling anyone about it until the day before closing? Classy, you Park Avenue douchebags.

Oh, wait, its now two hours before the closing, and you idiots have neglected to tell me (the one preparing the survey, you know, that thing you have to have to close legally) that there is a THIRD FUCKING TITLE COMMITMENT BECAUSE YOU ASSHOLES CAN'T BE ARSED TO FUCKING TALK TO ONE ANOTHER, YOU FUCKHEADS?!? Fuck.

Whatever, they just made a multimillion dollar deal fall through, no big, right? Assholes will still get paid, no matter what, because they are Park Avenue douchebags (and will scream and whine when we tell them they need to pay us before we'll release the survey).

Last night, my mother told me she is selling/ scrapping the car. It has made me completely lose it, and I spent at least 15 minutes just crying, and at least an hour stressing and moping. Exam stress does things like this to you.

That car was a part of my life. part of our family for something like 10 (?) years. Lusitania. '98 Saturn SL2. Got 33 mpg, handled well even in Wisconsin winters, and hauled two canoes and a kayak across town on multiple occasions. You hauled me across the state to Rhinelander for scout camp more times than I can count. Also to Ely an Watersmeet for camping, Milwaukee for chess tournaments and college tours, Madison and beyond for Quaker retreats.
Until a couple of years ago, you were a damn reliable car, too. You never broke down on us or even gave us a big scare. I know that we started using Hindy (Hindenburg, a Toyota Highlander my mom bought from her father) more and more a few years ago, but you still meant a lot to us. It was so sad when your starter blew back in 2010 and we decided no more long trips. Despite needing that organ transplant and your aging, I was still hoping to take you back to college. I thought I would be able to fix you up and get a couple of more years out of you. It looked less and less likely each semester, but I still hoped.

Goodbye, Lucy. You were a great car and we all loved you.

Thank you for letting us know about your love of this one '98 Saturn.

I think your post might explain a lot to outsiders about our relationship to that machine.

I am sorry your family is losing a member. Pat her on the hood for us.
Will you be giving her flowers? A few dollar store plastic flowers might be a nice touch.

Lucy did serve you well for a good long time. Say, "Good-Bye." for me.
Bye! Lucy! I hardly knew you!

GREETINGS; HEY!
I am breaking the rules by Double Posting.

In some communities, today is a bit of a big deal.
In other communities today means, "Nothing."

Maybe, this belongs in What I Learned, Today.
I can tell you a story about Friday The Thirteenth.

HEY!! TODAY IS FRIDAY THE THIRTEENTH!
What does that mean to you?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Friday_the ... _etymology

I learned something and it was a ton of fun.
Would you like to know what I learned?

It is a Truth of Humanity. It is an old story.
How do you want to hear it? How do I want to tell it?

There is no way I can do justice to the Story of Friday the Thirteenth.

Spoiler:
Today is Friday the Thirteenth.
Is that a Lucky Day or an UnLucky Day?

There was a time when I would say out loud and in the open,
"Friday the Thirteenth is a Lucky day to My People."

It started out as a day to be careful. "Take Care! It's Friday the Thirteenth."
Those words would ring out. I loved those words. ok. It was, just, me.

I thought that was a ton of fun. Surprise people XKCD.
Be careful and tell them, "The Universe is out to get you, today."

It is nice to have days stand out from one another.
Days are not to be an, "endless march through a barren wilderness."
(some English guy said that on the Infinite Monkey Cage.
he was talking about Art. Life is Art. some Art sucks.)

What The People do with a thing like Friday the Thirteenth is Art.
What The People do with a thing like Solstice is Art, too.

The Shops close on X-Mas. Was it decreed by God?
Who picked the 25th of December? When does ManKind need hope, the most?

This is the 21st Century. It is Summer in Australia!
It is also Saturday the Fourteenth in Australia.

The White People down there took Friday the Thirteenth with them?
Is that funny? White People are a bundle of Superstitions. Just like everyone else?

I think humanity, of which I am a part, is funny.
Like small children. A wise Pediatric Medical Specialist and funny guy said, 'Children will willingly share only a cold and their Mother's age.'

I think he was wrong. Children will willingly share darned near anything.
Adults will share Ideas. Did you ever have an Idea? Where did you get it?

Did you ever reject the Religion of your youth? Did you ever, just, decide to Not Be Superstitious?
XKCD types tend to be nearly boastful about having rejected the Religion of their youths.

I would think about it then I would do shit. Like walk alone in the Dark.
Not to prove the point; I forgot to bring a flashlight. What? I forgot about dark?

Are you afraid of the dark?

Today is Friday the Thirteenth.
Are you afraid of Friday the Thirteenth?

In Western People there may be a gene for Friday the Thirteenth.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-25156510

I don't know. Do you?
Are Black People more at risk for some kinds of thinking?
Are Asians at risk for other kinds of thinking?
Are White people very difficult, sometimes?

I think it is funny when people bang into Superstitions.
When White People bang into Superstitions they will often tell me it is not a superstition.

Might makes right and all that.
Do you believe in Friday the Thirteenth?

How does information travel?
How does the information about how to behave on Friday the Thirteenth travel?

How about Christmas and New Year's Day?
ech. There is good news and bad news.

The Good News is Human Beings can be delightful.
The Bad News is Human Beings can be awful.

That is like Christmas and New Years?
Everyone is Good on Christmas and Horrid on New Years night?

ech. people!
There are communities where Halloween became down right dangerous.
Friday the Thirteenth can become dangerous, too.

I deactivated my facebook account back in march 2012.

A friend has told me that facebook now allows for deactivated accounts to be viewed, which means that my profile is basically still in existence. How long has it been like this, and why is it not news?

The one thing I hate most about deactivated Facebook accounts is that once someone you know deactivates their Facebook profile, all of their posts disappear. So, for example, if they commented on one of your photos or posts and you replied back, it ends up looking like you're talking to yourself. If I'm not mistaken, Facebook used to only remove the profile picture and replace the name with "Facebook User".

AFAIK it's always been that way with posts/comments.

How about just let the whole thing buffer up ahead of time, like you used to, so at least you could be sure to watch without interruptions? No? TOO GOOD A THING THAT WAS, I GET IT. SUFFERING IS GOOD FOR CONSUMERS.

Until the heat death of the Internet.
Every key stroke exists and is accessible from the first e-mail sent to GrandMa to the last logout of Facebook or a Forum.
All of it.

Why delete a Facebook Account?
If you don't want to use it, don't.
It will not go away, if you do not use it.

Did it really exist? Just words, numbers, and strange symbols on a computer screen.
Not a very durable medium for as durable as it is.

As long as any internet exists, it all exists.
I suppose there are ways of destroying information One and ForEver.

Why would you want to do that? Simply stop playing with the toy.
It will gather dust in the cloud.

Then (shrug) when the cloud gets overladen, it will rain Zeros and Ones.
You will be dust by then. right?

I don't know about Facebook. I can't use xkcd Forum's PM system.
Why? Is it a system wide problem? Or; Am I special?

This rant has a title:

"Roll Doubling: This Shit Has Gone Too Far"

I have been peripherally aware for some time now that if you purchase a 'premium' or, more recently, 'name-brand' roll of paper towels, you are, in some nebulous fashion, actually getting '2-rolls worth' or paper towel for your money. This information is typically conveyed by means of a label stating something like "n=2n!" where 'n' is the number of real rolls physically contained in the package (so a typical package of six rolls would have a label bearing the mark '6=12!')

I understand this is basically a marketing ploy, but it makes sense to me on some level that one paper towel can 'do more' than another if it is larger, more absorbent and/or tougher say. (whether or not that's true for typical use cases I don't have any idea.) It doesn't impact me much though because I rarely purchase paper towels and when I do they tend to be in sensibly proportioned TEU sized packages.

Anyway, earlier today I made the traditional pilgrimage to the local warehouse-store for a containerized portion of toilet paper only to discover to my dismay that this 'doubling of rolls' has carried over to bath-tissue in a big way. In fact, I couldn't locate a single package of bog-roll in the store that hadn't been in some way doubled. Even the store-brand and other generic packages bore the 'n=2n!' mark.

This is just unacceptable! For starters, there's no way I'm gonna buy that any advances in shit-ticket technology will allow one square to do the same amount of work as two. Shit just don't work that way.

And even if it did, then when this magical 'roll-doubling' technology became ubiquitous (as it apparently has given what I saw today) then putting it on the package as a selling point would cease to make even the admittedly non-existent amount of sense it already did (insert obscure 'tau' joke here).

The package I actually went home with says '1TEU=2TEU(regular rolls)' but it's the fucking store brand, it's already composed of 'regular rolls' they couldn't be more regular if they were fed a diet containing an appropriate amount of fiber. Unless I open up that package to find a god-damned tardis full of the morning papers, there's no way that label has any bearing on reality.

I was under the impression that double rolls simply have twice as many squares as single rolls. No extra bum-wipey power, just half of the roll-changing.

Logically, if a toilet roll is circular, with a hollow centre circle of radius r, the radius of a roll with double the volume of toilet paper will be around (2a2 - r2)0.5, where a was the original radius of the toilet paper roll. Thus, assuming r is approximately 2cm, and the original total radius a was around 5cm, the new radius should be about 6.8cm. I think this fits with my experience of what's happened with toilet rolls - rolls with a diameter of around 14cm seem to have largely replaced smaller rolls with about 10cm diameter.

Also, TIL that if you search for dimensions of toilet paper tubes, you find a lot of sites discussing how to measure / compare the girth (and length) of your penis using a toilet paper tube (or perhaps a variety of such, I didn't investigate in detail).

Unfortunately, some of us have toilet roll holders that are sized for single rolls and bog down with doubles. I've all but given up on finding toilet paper that fits these days.

Hmm, I guess I never considered that the rolls might actually be physically larger.

Still, the labels could be done better. 'n=2n!(regular rolls)' is not very descriptive, and doesn't even seem to be accurate when casual investigation shows that 'regular rolls' are not a thing anymore.

Long ago, my mom bought a package of toilet paper that came with an extender. It basically just replaced the old bar for the toilet paper holder and extended it out a bit. That little thing has traveled with me to 4 different residences.

Ok so I just wrote a rant for this page, and it got lost into the ether :-(

Anyway, it was about why trains are so expensive, and only barely worth it.
But ultimately I'm really comfortable. This is so much nicer than the bus, also internet.
It's a lot more expensive than the bus, and not much cheaper than a plane.
