Today I learned that the nation of Canada, the discoverer of aluminum, and the company that first popularized the process to isolate aluminum from bauxite (the very process that produces most aluminum in the world today) all spelled it "aluminum".

It was alumium to fit the the x-ium naming... but the forunner of IUPAC decided that Aluminium was better.

Today I learnt how to a proper error calculation. With partial derivatives and everything.

I also learnt that American use of Aluminum probably isn't its discoverer's fault, but maybe one man's:
Wiki wrote:In 1892, however, Charles Martin Hall used the -um spelling in an advertising handbill for his new electrolytic method of producing the metal, despite his constant use of the -ium spelling in all the patents he filed between 1886 and 1903.
Though that seems a bit much of a reaction to one advertising flier.

Disregarding the etymology of the word and so on, I'm firmly in the "aluminium" camp. "Aluminum" just sounds... stupid IMNSHO

And I think throwing in an extra syllable just makes you sound like a pretentious asshole.

Which is the national characteristic of the British people, so there you go.

Americans are too busy getting work done to waste time turning "aluminum" into a five-syllable word.

I also learned that my school doesn't believe computer science majors deserve a lounge. Because we're too lazy as is (is their excuse).

Is it bad that the first thing I thought was "Hey! A Postal Service reference!"?

Today I learned just enough about Computability theory to have my interest piqued but not enough for it to make any real sense at all. I'll have to look into a book or two. (It might have made more sense, but my Japanese listening exam ran long so I was 10 minutes late to the start of my Information and Computer Science H22 lecture, where the lecture on computability took place).
There's a method to my madness. Somewhere. Don't worry, I'll find it!

Today I learned that when I have not had enough sleep, am mentally fried from uni and have recently played too many computer games, that I will start to think in game voice-over and game "computer-think"; I finished a math tute, went out and was going to go home. My mind ran through several lines of messages along the lines of;
Primary Objective complete. Retrieving new objective data.... .... Data received.
Analyzing. New objective: return home.
Calculating multiple paths of return.
Most efficient path calculated. Executing transit process.

About thirty seconds later I suddenly stopped and went....wait....what?
