THE OFFICE: FINAL DEBATE

Postby no-genius » Sun Feb 11, 2007 12:16 pm UTC

OK, I am sick of this, so I want it decided once and for all.

I have seen 3 episodes of the USA version. don't want to see any more.

The US' first season was a bit weak, but Season 2 completely surpasses the UK version in every way. Season 3, so far, is shaping up to be the same.

Unless someone promoted me while I was asleep, I'm not a mod. Yet... //tents fingers

No seriously, you're still deluded. It's just plain ol' painful to watch Rick Gervais in the UK version, and while it certainly has a lot of funny parts (thanks entirely to Martin Freeman and the guy who plays Gareth), the US version is funnier overall.

No seriously, I'm still deluded. It's just plain ol' painfully FUNNY to watch Rick Gervais in the UK version, and while it certainly has a lot of funny parts (thanks entirely to Martin Freeman and Mackenzie Crook), the US version is funnier overall.

What about Big Keith????? THe guy is a fucking genius!

On the dvd Gervais is like, we don't know if he was doing it on purpose, or if he thinks thats naturalistic acting, and when we laughed he just kept quiet about it.

(also this is where me being a mod would help)

From what I hear, and I've never seen the US version beyond the inexcusably shitty pilot episode, the US version started out trying to ape the UK version and was a bit rubbish at it, then when it ran out of UK episodes to steal started doing its own thing and became pretty good. But by that point it was too different from the original to be definitively "better" or "worse", and it was just a matter of personal preference.

Personally, I think the US should really play the Sports Night card more prominently in this argument -- that predated (I think) even the UK version of The Office and was basically the same show with different characters.

PS. no-genius, are you adding trivia to other people's quotes? Because that's just strange.

to my mind, the american office is on a par with 13yearolds quoting monty python back and forth. yes, its funny. but its not original. and it has annoying voices. and it should not be on tv. problem solved.

I agree (sort-of)

(also when I said this would decide it, I was lying. It only decides if UK wins.)

UK all the way. The UK one was innovative, and very funny at times. The rest of the time just brilliantly awkward.

My room mate tells me it is the source of the "that's what she said" fad, so I've graduated from thinking I wouldn't like it if I ever saw it to downright hating it without ever seeing it.

Yeah, but that's like hating the Pixies for influencing all the tripe that passed for music in the 90s. Or likewise the Beatles for the 70s.

I've never seen The Office besides the British version once, which was pretty amusing, but I'm willing to bet it was hilarious on the show. It's just that once a bunch of idiots got a hold of it they were going to of course ruin it, because that's what idiots do.

Is there something wrong with that? I DO blame the Pixies for shitty 90s music and I DO blame the Beatles for AWESOME 70s music.

Yeah, there is something wrong: anyone that produces anything good, unless they do it in a vacuum, will inspire loads of crap (for example, The Beatles inspiring classic rock or Beethoven inspiring mid-to-late romantic composers). The better they are the more crap they'll inspire.

It's not like great bands nowadays draw from absolutely nothing for their talent. And "loads of crap" is hugely subjective. A creative artist will draw from many things to craft their own music.
