Yahoo Answers

Postby hipp5 » Fri Jul 25, 2008 10:04 pm UTC

I've searched but can not find a thread dedicated to discussing this.

Anywho: Yahoo Answers. SO. DAMN. PAINFUL. It seriously makes me scared for the state of the world. One question I came across was "Mrs. Bitchface (or whatever her name was) was paid $36.75 for 3 and a half hours work. What was her hourly wage?" Seriously. That asker better be 4 years old or else ima gonna half to break down his/her door and punch him/her in the face until she/he learns how to do division.

At the same time I can't help but waste hours of my time trying to answer the questions. I guess I have comic 386 syndrome.

I participate on Yahoo Answers. Don't get me started on everything that is wrong with that site. If you want to hear my gripes, you might want to get up, go to the bathroom, get a glass of your favorite beverage, and be prepared to read about five pages of ranting and raving.

Oh man! It's horrible, and I only answer music questions. Seriously, when somebody lists off a bunch of obscure indie bands that they like, I'm sure they aren't looking to be told to listen to "The good stuff: Alice In Chains, Type-O-Negative..."
I have nothing to offer anybody except my own confusion.

How is babby formed? (flash animation)

Just in case you haven't seen it before. And I hate to say it, but as awful* as Yahoo Answers is, it's damn useful when you DO get the answer to a question, which is actually pretty often for me.

*Why do I have an urge to spell this as "aweful"? Just talking about it is contagious!

Out of curiosity inspired by this thread, I tried Yahoo Answers for the first time. Ugh, what a mess. Many if not most of the questions seemed to be middle or high school kids asking questions directly off their homework. Fair enough, but I could no sooner post a careful hint than someone would post the answer. *smack* Why bother--the kid learns nothing but copying down answers. A few of the responses were simply wrong (what, after Primates, is the next closest group related to humans? Answer: monkeys. Arrh.), some were very good. Most could be found on Wikipedia or Google with no more effort than it takes to write the question.

I think it is a great idea, but very poorly executed. They need to distinguish homework from non-homework, set up specific guidelines for answering homework related questions, and provide some means of responding to the other responses.
Don't look or you'll collapse my wave function!

I had signed up originally to get one of those energy-efficient light bulbs for free. The way to get one was to answer an environmental question, and you received the light bulb and a canvas tote bag. I had answered a couple of other questions as well, and forgot about them until I received an e-mail that I had been picked as Best Answer. Over the months I've done a few more, and have over 200 Best Answers. Some are very thorough, while others are quick and to the point. I think my strongest category is Comics and Animation, although I'm not a "Top Contributor".

I mainly answer questions in the Astronomy section (trying to avoid the endless Planet X / Nbiru / 2012 nonsense) and the Religion section (although I usually just use that to be snarky at creationists :P), and it's hard to try to encourage people to actually search things for themselves.

Yahoo Answers fights with YouTube for the top place on my list of "places where you can't spot satire because people really are that stupid". Every time I think I have it pegged which one is worse, the other comes out with something so completely asinine that my brain explodes, and it starts all over again...

For some reason the last line "evryehting revolves around humans." strikes me as too eloquent (poor spelling aside) to come from someone that stupid. I say troll.

Youtube commenters (and their spores) are the only creatures that can argue about something subjective and be objectively wrong.

I used Yahoo answers for the first time in over a year this weekend this weekend. I wanted to know the name of a song I heard on TV. I used google, it pointed me to yahoo answers, and bam, I downloaded the song.

That being said, the analogy to YouTube is correct. If you ever want to feel smarter than other people, just read the comments at either site. They make my brain hurt.

I recall maddox's April Fools Day spoof from a few years ago that made fun of Loose Change. The YouTube commenters made it impossible to tell whether they were being intentionally obtuse, or if they had extremely severe mental deficiencies.

That sounds familiar. I've either seen that quote, or it has been posted elsewhere on the fora. I mean, pisslips? What kind of an insult is that? If this transpired IRL, there would have been much mockery, then a beating.

I love how, on Youtube, no matter what the original topic of the video, a few pages into the comments a very intense argument always erupts over something completely *unrelated to the original topic*. It leaves me wondering how the conversation arrived at "A ball of dick cheese would make a better president than Bush" on a video of Bill Gates' Frasier cameo.

If the internet allows us to act how we really want to without the norms of real-life society, does this mean a lot of us are morons inside? :| On second thought, I don't want to know ...
