Image resizing: It's free and easy!

Postby MotorToad » Sat Aug 30, 2008 7:51 pm UTC

I don't personally think this is worth its own thread, but I've seen this issue often enough and replying to each incident isn't fixing it. Many people are posting 675238902 X 7423857825 images and then apologizing because they can't resize them or their photo processing apps are "broken."

Install this!

microsoft wrote:1. Open the folder that contains the pictures you want to resize. In Thumbnail view, right-click any picture you want to resize, and click Resize Pictures.

2. In the Resize Pictures dialog box, click the size you want your photo to be, and click OK. In general, Small is a good selection for most of your needs, such as e-mailing pictures or posting them to a Web site.

3. The original file, flowers.jpg, is still intact; and a new, resized file, named flowers (Small).jpg, has been added to the same folder.
Of course, this only works for windoze boxes. If you're not running windows and can't resize your images, then wtf are you doing running that OS? You're too clueless for it. :P

This sounds like it could be useful for the "Guide to the Fora for Newbies" thread...

... but you can resize pictures using MSPaint. The only reason I see this being useful is if it can do batch converts. Even then, its useful, but not so much for postng pics to the fora since you'll only be posting one or two at any one time.

Hell, you can resize using imageshack, or even facebook.

Yeah, if you are resizing an image to put online, it's easy enough to type 'online image resizer' into google. No need to install anything (handy if, like me, you are using public internet access or somesuch) and generally no need to sign up and have an account.

I usually use imageshack.us , or else I go into Windows Picture Viewer and take a screenshot and then copy it into Paint Shop Pro and save it there. There are a lot of ways to resize.

I've been using irfanview for the last few years and it's great. Saves high quality jpgs, and preserves the aspect ratio so it doesn't look all messed up. You can get it at irfanview.com

I'm with the Irfanview people here. Although its pixel-level editing capabilities are limited, it's extremely useful for resizing/converting/loads of other shit. My Stinky Cheese Man avatar with the hat was created in MSpaint as a bitmap (because paint's jpeg compression is really lossy), then converted to a 100% quality jpeg in Irfanview.

Agreed.

I always just used MSPaint (now KolourPaint). Stretch, set both sizes to ~40%, save as new file. Simple and quick.

Because when I saved as a jpeg through paint, I ended up with big blotches all over the image that were visible at a 1:1 scale. And I couldn't be arsed choosing a compression quality below 100%.

Then why use JPEG? PNG is designed for that, JPEG is not.

Good point, by the way.

You can resize your images with almost any photo editing program, although some may make it difficult to do. If you post a picture from your Photobucket or Flickr account, you can resize the photo there, but they only have three or four options.

Who needs more than three or four options? We shouldn't need to be picky with images here, aside from some "maximum" image size.

convert hugepicture.png -resize 320x240 smallpicture.png

Or mogrify, for batch-processing

Also: second on the 100% quality JPEG hate. Even at 100% quality, JPEGs are still lossy... and as you approach 100%, the filesize explodes with little visible increase in quality. If you're getting noticible artefacts at 85% or so, then you should take it as a sign that JPEG is the wrong format, and you should be using something lossless (like PNG).

I'm not saying it's the best application ever for resizing. It's just really easy and it completely trumps anyone's claims to not have the ability to resize the images they post.
