Who Dominates our forums?

Postby Sprocket » Wed Sep 17, 2008 3:02 pm UTC

I'm curious as to who the average XKCD reader really is. But since this poll will only reach people on the fora I guess I'll have to accept that as my question.

What type of person are you? Note to those who are youngins - you can think about the responses as saying what you WOULD major in in college.

I'm a Movie/Book geek.

The obccesses* over Firefly/Star Wars/Star Trek, has an overflowing DVD collection of dodgy Neo-Noir movies and an book-case. Also owns random trinkets such as a lightsaber with plans to build another :D Rather knowledgable about Art (I can bullshit about it rather well & I'm pretty good at drawing, esp. perspectives etc) but not so much that I have my own Deviart.

No interest at all in Maths or Comp-Sci, actually I just skip through reading that stuff. More interested in biology/psychology sciencewise.

Will be studying English Lit at Uni next year with the aims of going into teaching.

Edit: I meant to also say that I see "Geek" as meaning that you are part of the general (internet-based) culture and then "Nerd" relating to the in-depth knowledge of your specific chosen subject(s).

There's no linguisticsy option! Sad. (Also no romance and sarcasm options, I guess.)

Anyway I'd need multiple choice for compsci/linguistics. Wheeee.

Letsee..what am I. Well, I like science and math and geeky tv shows and movies and musicians. I'm a total geek hag. I dated a math major (only after he switched out of music) in college, and am now with a pretty hard-core code monkey, and have a tendency to surround myself with geeky folk. In 5th grade I discovered D&D.

I'm artistic and writerly when inspiration can get me off my fat arse, I'm trying to get more involved in film making. I majored in video production and English, and I'm thinking I need to get my music-on one of these days, but learing how to play an instrument is expensive and takes like...effort, a bone that I was sadly born without. I do have a peice of cartilidge in its stead though, which serves me on rare occasion.

natraj wrote:There's no linguisticsy option! Sad. (Also no romance and sarcasm options, I guess.)

lol. Haze, you studied comp. sci. on a college level, therefore, you can answer comp. sci. major, even if you aren't right now.

My basic interest is finding out how the levels of knowledge about the things that are often joked about in XKCD actually relates to the people here. How many of us get all the comp sci. joke, all the math jokes, all the science jokes, some of them, most of them, enough that we keep coming back, the meme related jokes, or just appreciate the ones that are about other stuff...like the news, Jurassic Park or relationships.

I know that many of us learn things about the literacy of computer science and math just by hanging out here that we never used to know, so we get jokes we didn't used to get, or we are surrounded by geeks and just pick things up, but these specifics start to get too dicey for a poll, just pick something that's crose enahf.

Basically if you're a math major or a computer scientist or whatever, I'm not interested in the fact that you like geeky things BESIDES that.

Where do people who have 2 years Geography, 2 Years Economics, 2 Years Graphic Design, 3 Years Computer Science and MANY years of Web Design and Development and a life of living on a farm and being an outdoors man fit in? I know too much about too many things.

I agree that we need to be able to pick more than one. I intend to be a math/physics double major, but I have long-term job offers in both software engineering and physics. I code a lot in my free time. I also spend a lot of time online, and am something of a gamer.

I picked the one involving art, despite the fact that I do have some dabbling in science, comp sci, and math.

This poll would probably have been better if it was multiple choice without lumping them up into things that seem almost stereotypical to me. (it kind of bugs me that the only real option I have is to say I'm an artist with no knowledge of science and such).

I've got a bachelors degree in computer science. I play a lot of games. I code for fun. I know reasonable amount about physics and maths (Collage level).
The only xkcd jokes I don't get are the ones about books or films, because I've read less fiction than anyone I've asked (I maybe able to count them on the digits on my hands/feet).

I see Romance, Sarcasm and Language isn't represented in that poll. For that I am really sad, for I occasionally combine all three into one epic failure (usually resulting in wine being splashed in my face, right in the middle of the restaurant).

I'm more of an arts/film-making/music geek than anything else, armed with my not so trusty degree in animation. Bit of gamer but in general, i'm not a "convential" geek. I'm so bad at science and maths, it's embarrassing. BUT I appreciate more of the romance, sarcasm and language side of xkcd, like Sir Fel of staff above me.

I ticked literary geek, but I'm not sure it's 100% accurate. I know niche things about science, particularly weird physics junk [chaos and string theory, word]. I'm not really all that literary in a traditional sense, but I am an arts major, I guess. Also, I do just generally hang out online and play computer games [and, you know, tabletop games too]. And occasionally do some art when I get the time. Variation, that's where life is at.
