Screen Resolution

Postby '; DROP DATABASE;-- » Mon Nov 24, 2008 7:30 am UTC

Does anyone know what Vista's default resolution is? And what's your primary screen resolution? (i.e. the one you're usually looking at/working on, if you have more than one.)

1280x1024 all the way.

My monitor has the weirdest ratio, so I cannot use the standardized(?) resolution of 1280x960.
I upgraded from 1024x768 to my current resolution about four years ago, and I cannot understand why I still see people use this resolution. Everything is huge!

My laptop is 1440x900, by the way.

And my friend is kind of sure that Vista's default resolution from a fresh install is 1024x768.
I don't twist the truth, I just make it complex.

My laptop is 1280 x 800, thus it is an Otter/Duck!

Though as it's tablet it's also 800 x 1280.

Don't have Vista so I can't confirm nor deny the reported resolutions.

Apparently mine's set to 1280 x 800. It's a nicely wide screen.

I only recently convinced my mother to let the computer stay at anything except 800 X 600.

It's currently at 1024 X 768, I prefer 1280 X 1024 but it's an okay compromise.

Vista question: I haven't a clue, sorry.

1920x1200 on my main monitor. I have a 22" next to it, so total resolution is 3600x1200. On my laptop which I'm on now, the res is 1440x900.

OtterXDuck, mines 1280X768 anything else looks bad on this monitor (the monitor is a giant wide screen affair that came with my new computer so I had no choice in the matter). It can go higher but then it gets those weird fuzzy spots and the text becomes impossible to read without exploding it to huge sizes, it can go smaller too, but I don't remember why I didn't like it there (maybe it was the smaller resolutions that caused the fuzzy spots I dunno). Either way I like it for the most part because now I can have a lot of open windows if I want to without them overlapping, which is nice for whenever I draw something and am using a reference.

It IS kind of annoying in that my tablets active area can't be made to fit the whole monitor correctly but it's not too bad.

1360x1024 for the main computer, 1280x960 or 1280x1024 (it varies) for the secondary one.

So, otterxduck, I guess.

1440x900 here. As for the Vista question, I would assume for LCD's which have an optimal, native resolution, Vista would check for this and have that resolution as default. For CRT's I'm not so sure.

1800x1350@68Hz. It's the highest resolution my monitor can handle without the flicker bothering me. I've also got modelines at lower resolutions for 72Hz (DVDs), 75Hz (PAL console games), 89.91Hz (NTSC console games), and 160Hz (shutter-glasses 3D).

I'm worried about what's going to happen when my current monitor fails. Decent-quality large CRTs are starting to get hard to find, and I haven't heard good things about how current LCDs handle non-native resolutions and aspect ratios. How does something like a 24" widescreen LCD do with 320x200?

As long as they're an integer multiple of the native resolution it'll be perfectly sharp, possibly with black borders depending on aspect ratio (make sure you get a monitor that you can adjust that on, because some stretch the input automatically and look like crap). Basically if you can use whole pixels on the monitor then it doesn't matter if you're using one, four, nine or so on to represent one pixel of the source media. If you try to set it so one pixel of the source is represented by, say, 1.7 physical pixels on the monitor then it'll look like crap.

why the hell would you use a 24" LCD (or any monitor for that matter) to display 320x200? That seems like a horrible waste for pretty much every component involved.
