Facts you won't accept

Postby Sea Ferring » Fri Dec 05, 2008 3:47 am UTC

George Carlin's dead. I just don't believe it, it must be a mistake; a world without Carlin is not a world I want to live in.

If wormholes and time travel and string theory and all of those horrible, horrible things turn out to be real, I will still refuse to accept it. Wormholes are stupid. Even if they exist, they are still stupid. The universe is stupid for having them. I want to complain to the writers of the universe.

That the universe doesn't have enough mass to reverse expansion. Every time I hear about mass-carrying neutrinos or new dark matter/energy I personally redo the math to see how close we are to eventually reversing entropy.

I realise there's like 1,999,999 chances in 2,000,000 that we didn't just win ten million dollars in last night's lottery. But I'm not ready yet to find out for sure. If I wait and check the ticket tomorrow, I can continue tonight to believe that I don't have to go back to work. And can buy an island

The chances of winning the UK lottery are something like 1 in 14 million (we worked it out in maths once).

That quantum mechanics requires some inexplicable random component in the Universe. I have yet to see any proof that it's not merely pseudorandom, and I don't expect to.

Weird randomness and virtually infinite universes spawned from wavefunction collapses and "free will" created from pure randomness and a million other things that make no sense...or a pseudorandom number generator? Ever heard of Occam's razor?

...Well, there is this, but I can't accept that either because it makes no sense at all.

It only works for the Nth number of games, not 1 finite statistical choice. I.e choosing to swap for every game for an infinite number of games will yield 2/3, but for a single game (ignoring restarts/replays) it will always be 1/2. A single statistic doesn't get changed because he COULD have picked a losing one, in the same way that you're not more likely to roll a 6 because you COULD have rolled a 1 before. It's wrong because they say the statistics of the Nth number of games applies to an individual

Eh? If you make a branching tree of all the possible outcomes--you pick a car/goat, you switch/change, etc--the probability of your victory with switching is 2/3. For one game or two games or whatever. Unless I'm deeply, deeply wrong in my probability. Think of it this way: There's a 2/3 chance that the car is in the group of doors you didn't pick, and he's guaranteeing to give you the winning member of that group.

Are you my Theoretical CS professor? He keeps talking about how Godels Theorem and Rice's theorem and whatnot are so depressing because you just can't figure everything out and there's nothing one can do about it... I wish it wasn't true, either.

That being said, I refuse to accept that the Halting problem is undecidable.

I doubt it, if you goto good improv shows you'd find just as funny stuff. I'd believe that they had the song genres or games they were going to play beforehand, and that they gave 1-2 minutes of thinking time off camera, but I refuse to believe it's fully scripted without proof!

This thread is going to be locked or the .9 will be forked or something. Just saying. There's a reason this is taboo on the math forum.

In summary: .999... = 1. Completely and totally. They are the same number. It's like you guys are complaining about cos(0) being something other than 1 because it doesn't "look like 1". There is no difference between them. Go read the wikipedia page. There is no need to talk about this.
