What I object to is that it breaks the flow of people's sentences and makes it harder to read the board. I can understand people getting frustrated by seeing the same abbreviations used over and over again, but a short, three letter acronym is a lot easier to ignore than a random sentence.
l.o.l. is a lot easier to ignore than lol
q.f.t. is a lot easier to ignore than qft

I don't see any sense in this whatsoever, and it has more than a hint of collective punishment about it. Why not consider the legitimate uses of these forbidden letter combinations:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lol_(disambiguation)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Qft (And note how this indiscriminate filter has distorted a perfectly legitimate link)

If you're wondering, I've also caught on to Chuck. Norris being transformed into Bruce Schneier and "lost. the game" turning into "lost twenty dollars and my self respect".

These forums are generally mature and intelligent enough to avoid descending into recycling memes and unnecessary repetition of acronyms. Whoever came up with these word filters should grow up as well.
Please note that despite the lovely avatar Sungura gave me, I am not a medical doctor.

Possibly my proudest moment on the fora.

WIth regards to the thing that turns into "PONIES!" etc., I think it specifically mentions in the fora rules how such things should not be necessary. And besides, the fora instead usually use "This. Just this." in situations where other forums would use the-acronym-that-turns-into-ponies.

Sorry SecondTalon, but what is the point? The point I was attempting to make is that these fora do not need policing with word filters to ensure high-quality posts. Your point appears to be that the wordfilters are there as the police to ensure that the descent into memes and acronym recycling does not occur, correct?

(Answer: yes, but you'd have to write a script to spam out the forums, and that's not very nice.)

You know you have a point - I was thinking there was a character limit on post size. I was thinking a 65536 character limit or something. Although I guess it's possible to remove that limit, I honestly don't know if phpBB does...

But it's true that your IP would probably get banned long before you tested all the 65536-character words.

First, TIDY UP YOUR FUCKING QUOTES. You talk about efficiency and everything, then go and put in about four extra lines when you quote someone. That is what we educated people call hypocrisy. Secondly, you could know that you know all the wordfilters by being around for a long time, or by paying attention, or by studying fora-history. Or by having admin ninja powers.

@ethraax (the second person who ninja'd me on this post): There is a fairly simple way to beat the 60k character limit (yeah, it's exactly 60k... annoying, I know).

though a post of 150000 QFTs now gets turned into a 104,987 word or 734980 characters. So its possible to avoid the character limit (not that it makes any sense.

Numbers found through empiricial trial and error.

Also, "lost. the game" is just going to screw things up. I discovered it when I said "Damn, I just lost. the game." and it turned into "Damn, I just lost twenty dollars and my self respect." But what if someone wrote "You just lost twenty dollars and my self respect!"? At least make your word filters make sense!

It wouldn't be cruel but the fora should re-hyphen things, in the spirit of hyphen. I.e those last few words become "re hyphen-things". It probably wouldn't work most of the time but I'm sure there would be good times.

Pretty much what Cheese said.

The way it works is pretty much like this.

Belial sees a phrase. Being human, this particular one irks him. He moves on. He sees the phrase again. The tell-tail eyebrow ridge flick happens, and his iris narrows to a sliver. Like.. uh.. a human's would. Belial still moves on.

He sees the phrase again, and decides to strike.

And lo, a word filter is born.

That's one story. There are many others....

Belial sees a phrase and pauses for a moment, thinking "Wouldn't it be better if they could say what they were really thinking?"

And lo, we learn that we are actually all pondering qft.

And I laugh myself right off my fat ass. Then I get back on, as he's my only means of conveyance. Also, I point out that there's a narrow line between ripping off something and referencing something.

But that is still just one story. There are many others...

The truth lies somewhere in between all of them.

But when in doubt.... it's because someone finds it funny. Someone with a red or light blue name.

Frankly, what it comes down to, is "Do we care?"

Or "What are we going to do about it?"

The answer: Nothing. They're moderators. They can do what they want, if they feel they should, or that it must be done. And frankly, word filters like the ones implemented here on XKCD do not infringe on freedom of speech, so there's nothing wrong with them.

Also, as I'm sure some of the older XKCDers and literary/English professors will tell you, the internet is obliterating the American-English language. Never before, in the history of speaking, has a language evolved so quickly, so drastically, as in the last 10 years. The reason? The internet. People are actually SAYING l.o.l in the real world. Granted, some words just carry over because they are funny when used in moderation, like pwn. Otherwise, the language should not be butchered by some of the treachery that leeches down from AOL Instant Messenger and other message boards. While I was in Highschool, a mere 2 and a half years ago, I volunteered in the 'Writing Lab', a place students could bring their writing assignments to be proofread. After abotu a month, I just got disgusted. People were handing me papers with 'to' replaced by the number 2, 'i' was not capitalized, and 'cuz' was ever-too-prevalent.

To sum it up, these word filters, whether you like it, realize it, or not, are saving the English language. On behalf of the XKCD population (And an entire language) too proud, ignorant, or thick-headed to say it, "Thank you!" [/rant]

More like 'The English language' as a whole
I saw a van with 'Tires' written on the side. In the UK... we haven't used that since tyres were iron hoops...

I'm guilty of using lol and roffle in public.
I used the former, first in parody of a quite affected friend of mine, but I degraded into using it more.
I used roffle, along with a friend of mine, as a synonym for rifle, when I went to Bisley this summer. Still occurs sometimes.
I also append with an -age sometimes, such as:
"They are conducting some serious shootage"
to mean
"They are shooting seriously"

But it flows better... and doesn't carry the serious tone as much. But I don't only use words such as the above for shooting. It's just the easiest usage that I remember.
