Oops, I accidentally a whole meme.

Postby LSK » Wed Dec 31, 2008 8:17 pm UTC

Let's engineer a meme!

Examining traits that memes tend to possess yields the following tips:

- It has to be weird and somewhat nonsensical.

- It can't have perfect production values; it has to have that "too good to be true" air about it.

- It has to be something that encourages being shared. Rickrolling is a perfect example of this - the very act of Rickrolling involved spreading the meme.

Any ideas?

No. Memes are a horrible byproduct of the internet...they're like afterbirth.

If you want to create afterbirth, go to 4chan and post a picture that's xenophobic, racist, disgusting, or somehow involves underage children.

Leave your crap out of XKCD.

Would you rather have the internet smeared with your own feces or someone else's?

It's a moot point - if you want to engineer a meme, discuss it here; if you don't, bring it to Serious Business.

Memes suck.

The point at which a joke becomes a meme is the exact point at which it ceases to be funny.

They're not amusing, they're annoying. Go spread unoriginality somewhere else.

Trying to engineer a meme? You're doing it wrong.

Still, they can be quite annoying. I usually find them funny for a short while but people always use them so out of context that it ruins the whole joke.

Leave your crap out of XKCD.

You are aware that a significant portion of xkcd strips are about internet memes? The strip has probably greatly popularized many memes. I think more strips are about internet memes than are about romance, sarcasm, math, or langauge.

You probably don't even know what a meme is, do you?

And an internet meme is not necessarily racist, disgusting, etc. Lolcats. What is so offensive about lolcats? You may find thm annoying, sure. Nothing inherently offensive about them (someone could make a racist one, sure. But the vast majority aren't). Same with Rickrolling. Same with Yo Dawg. So is Laser. So are, actually, most 4chan memes.

I ask you, you have never had an inside joke with your friends? That is the same type of meme as these internet memes, at a smaller scale, of course.

If you want a meme that is generated here to not be offensive, create one that isn't. The odds aren't stacked against it succeeding against an offensive one.

By even posting in the fora you are contributing in the culture of internet memes.

Jesus christ, of course I know what a damn meme is...it would be fundamentally wrong for me to criticize them if I didn't.

I'm not exactly a fan of either inside jokes, or memes. But with memes, a large portion of people are already aware of them, and they just happen over and over and over again. It's like Digg with it's giant ascii *facepalm* posts. They become overused and annoying.

I find them stupid and obtrusive. Inside jokes are fine, although I don't necessarily like them, because they are exclusive to a very small group of people and rarely are overused, and I rarely have to deal with them because they're well...exclusive. Memes aren't.

It's not that I find them offensive, I don't mind that at all. They're just damn annoying- I'm sick of the same idea being posted all over the internet countless numbers of time. It becomes utterly uninteresting.

Also, I'm not here on the forums because of the comic (I'm not a big fan of it), I'm here because the vast majority of people are intelligent, a nice break from the usual crap the internet throws at you.

Yo dog, I understood full well that you are not a fan of internet memes. you hate them more than Richard Milhouse Nixon hated them hippies. But I have proved you wrong in that most memes are offensive, so now your only argument is that they annoying. Do you think that your complaining on here will change the minds of the over 9000 people on these boards?
This comic is very close to the 4chan culture, really. Many people here post there. There is where meme is formed. They are never gonna give them up. Your compllaining won't stop these annoying memes. Yes, this is a smart fora. But there are plenty of other places you can go to escape. I accidentally a whole fora dedicated to philosophy .. . no 4chan memes there. The WHOLE fora too, LOL.
But maybe you can't escape. Perhaps the only place to find solace is to go to Malasia. I hope a pedobear don't touch you maul you on the way there.

I never made the point that they're offensive in my argument. I don't find virtually anything offensive. I also didn't make the point that I want all of the fora to stop using memes. That's a lot of Lego.

I think it should be mentioned that under Dawkin's first definitions of what a meme is technically fora and wikis are internet memes.

EDIT: Is wikis or wikies the plural of wiki? I'm not sure any more.
