Akinator, the Web Genius

Postby Kurushimi » Thu Jan 15, 2009 7:35 pm UTC

http://en.akinator.com/

This thing is pretty good. You think of any character, even fictional ones, and it will attempt to guess it by asking no more than 20 questions. So, go on. Put it to a test.

It got Donald Knuth, Richard Stallman, Alan Turing, and Ichigo (Bleach), and Doctor Octopus.

So far, for me, it's missed Doctor Strange and George Boole.

I ran it on home on firefox. (though, I'm using Internet Explorer now at the library)

What is the problem exactly?

After one round of 20 it didn't guess Jonathan Coulton. I gave it a further round after the first 20 on my second attempt and it got David Cameron.
Nice game.

Is your internet connection slow? It may just be taking a while.
And try running internet exploerer to see if it works, then.

P.S: Snap, it got Randall. (Though, the first few times I tried it. It kept mixing him up with Moot from 4 chan)

It got Malom Reynolds,
got Tesla,
didn't get Dr. Horrible
Got Jim from The Office
Got Alyx Vance from HL
Missed Eli Whitney
Got Santa
Missed Rudolph

EDIT: Got Juan "Johnny" Rico from Starship Troopers.

Quite impressive really, and it will only get better as more people play.

Got Kevin Rudd for Jonh Howard, which isn't that surprising I guess, considering they're really the same person.

Hmmm, I was wondering how I was going to fill in the afternoon.

It didn't get Anole, but he is fairly obscure as comicbook characters go, I suppose. It also did not get Quicksilver. Maybe I should stop using Marvel Comics.

Got:
Tyler Durden
Jerry Seinfeld
Jean Valjean
Hitler (got this one crazy fast)
Miley Cyrus (got Hanna Montana, close enough)

Missed:
Will Navidson
Rick Astley (instead it was Garth Brooks)
Kari Byron (instead got Katherine Moennig, but got it after 60 questions)
Donald Trump (got Stanley Fisher instead)

It's weird how on the ones it gets it begins to ask really specific questions.

Didn't get Christopher Walken (Guessed Bill Murray)
Didn't get Christopher Walken (Guessed Chevy Chase)
Didn't get Christopher Walken (Guessed Jim Carrey)
Didn't get Christopher Walken (Guessed Harrison Ford)
Got Christopher Walken

And don't you forget it, Akinator.

Tried it with Ludwig von Drake, it got pretty close but guessed Scrooge instead. It gave a long list of possible answers at the end but amazingly enough Ludwig wasn't even in it.

Edit: Looks like someone else did enter his name but typed it wrong...figures.

And it utterly failed to guess Bullwinkle, but I guess that's a bit unfair.

He did manage to guess Wario, though.

Eh? For me, it got The Doctor in only 15 questions. It even inexplicably asked the same question twice.

It's pretty good, but it's interesting how it doesnt ask for specifics so much as it cuts down possibilities.

It's managed to get geordi la forge, mal reynolds, rodney mckay, amanda palmer, randall munroe, the tank (left 4 dead), raz (Psychonauts), the goo ball from world of goo, arjen lucassen, fairly easily

It failed to get Astrid Van der Veer, Ben Folds and a random character from the story of eve online. The problem with ben folds is that it doesnt seem to know that he can and does play bass and guitar.

This thing's... good...

It missed Yoruichi Shihouin from BLEACH (though it was its second guess at the next screen, and I had some ambiguous answers).
Got Kisuke Urahara from BLEACH in 17.
Got Huey Freeman from the Boondocks.
Missed Granddad from the Boondocks (Elmer Fudd?!)
Got Faye Valentine from Cowboy Bebop.
Got Ein from Cowboy Bebop in 12 (easy since two questions are "is he a dog" and "has he been to space"...).
Got Lucy/Nyu from Elfen Lied in 16.
Got Motoko Kusanagi from Ghost in the Shell.
Missed Batou from Ghost in the Shell (there was a lot of "I don't know", because it's been awhile...and he was still the second guess).
Got Tachikoma from Ghost in the Shell in 19.
Got Greedo from Star Wars: A New Hope.
Missed that asteroid worm from the Empire Strikes Back (guessed Jabba. Though I admit at this point I was getting desperate to disprove the program).
Missed the Sarlaac Pit from Return of the Jedi (guessed Jabba again).
Guessed Jesus Christ from the Bible (ok, he knew it was in the bible and question 6 was "is he the Son of a God", yet he waited till 12 to guess Jesus).
Guessed Muhammed from the Qur'an. After I said he was an Arab, the program asked if he was Thai. Also Japanese.
Missed Omar Khayyam of the Rubaiyat (guessed Fernando Pessoa, but Omar was on the second page).

...Yes, I went through everything on my desk from left to right until my games picking characters, though I went back later and tried the obscure (Valkyria Chronicles) and found the characters on the page when he asks who you were thinking of... I should probably do more productive things with my time.

Got:
God
Nick Mason
Akinator

Missed:
Samuel L. Jackson (guessed Sylvester Stallone)
Dennis Ritchie (guessed Donald Knuth)
Benjamin Biolat (admittedly a bit obscure, guessed Damien Rice)
Hermann Göring (guessed Erwin Rommel)

Ah, "&partner$subdocument" is blocking the frame the text is in.

Huh, it asked "does your character have red hair?" and then "is your character red-haired?". >_>
It also asks "is your character a military man?" and "does your character live with his mother?" after being told it's a female.
It did guess Blackrose though... I was thinking Rena but they're practically the same character really. :P

OK, that's incredible how quickly it gets some of these. I find it incredible how well it can guess with so little information. Like, I'd have thought there were way more characters that fit into the parameters I give it. I sure as shit never would have guessed right based off these few questions.

It's hilarious when it asks you something really obviously specific to the character you're thinking of. Like, yeah, I know you know who I'm thinking of, show-off.

So far it's gotten Solid Snake, Batman, and Winston Churchill. It got the first two much faster than the latter, though.

Also lol at this question order:
"Is your character a politician?" Yes.
"Is your character bad?"

Hah. Do you really need to ask?

Edit: I am fucking shocked. I thought of a certain anime character, and it was asking me all these totally wrong questions that were completely irrelevant. "There's no way he's gonna get this," I think to myself, "there's a billion characters who don't have black hair and don't have any siblings."

The useless questions trundle on, finishing off with something like "is your character a detective?" Nope.

So I assume I've beat him, as I wait for the result to pop up. But then up pops the image... Akagi Shegeru. HOW THE FUCK. IT DIDN'T EVEN ASK ME IF HE WAS FROM AN ANIME.

Fuck. Must go obscurer. Maybe I should choose, like, Urabe.

Yeah, it's like "do they use a sword?" "do they go to school?" and you're thinking "there's still like 300 characters that could fit this description" and it gets it dead on.

It didn't get Black Hat Guy, but he was in the list of possibilities.

It obviously had Hitler by the 6th question, but then just threw in a few random ones until the 12th. (Is he French? I already told you he's German...)

It didn't get Washizu Iwao, but yeah, it was on the list. I was probably a little harsh on the "Does your character have white hair?" question. It's silver.

Edit: Got The Boss. I knew that'd be a popular character, but I still wasn't expecting it to pull through considering all the long shot questions there were ("Is your character Latvian?").

Hahaha. Halfway through a round with it right now, was thinking "How can you not get Kevin Bacon?" when "Does your character appear in a movie about dance?" comes up.

EdIIt: OHSHIT, and it gets it wrong! C'mon, dude, forrealz? Dancing movies = Kevin Bacon. Step your game up, Akinator.

EdIIIt: Got Light/Kira instantly, since he's undoubtedly been played half a zillion times.

I'm trying one last character, then stopping.

EdIVt: Wow, it got Wander of SotC. I was 95% that one would fail, since he's such an ambiguous character. Props.

... Maybe I'll go again for Ico.

EdVt (this editing convention isn't working at all any more): Unsurprisingly, nope. Poor, unfamous Ico.
