Turns out fucking with peoples' computers isn't that funny.

Postby cwoodin » Thu Jan 22, 2009 6:40 pm UTC

First, the background: I got assigned to live with this guy in the dorms at school last year. I had a wireless router, and since the school didn't provide wireless to the dorms, I gave him the info figuring it wasn't a big deal if he used it. We were both pretty decent with computers, but while he's a CS major and has a job at tech support at school, I am not/do not. This year we are living across the hall from each other - the wireless info is still the same, but since he has his own access point it's pretty much just me and my current roommate using it unless we're all playing a game over LAN or something.
Last year I played a lot of WoW. I took a break most of this year because of work, etc, but recently took it back up as a way to stay in contact with some family cross-country who also play, but earlier this year he mentioned in passing this program he'd thrown together that, when run, would uninstall the game from a person's computer. Woke up this morning to find that it had been put in my startup folder and the game was gone. Immediately several ideas ran through my head, ranging from the pretty serious (seeing how seriously tech support wants their employees to follow the school's computer regulations) to the less severe (cutting/pasting a bunch of stuff from the server he keeps up over to my computer; the program that pops up the little windows paperclip and shows sarcastic messages). Then, after a few breaths, I decided to be a little more creative. Then I realized I'm not that creative.

So I'm calling on you for advice/tips on what to do to screw with him and/or get him back.

(Feel free to merge if thread this overlaps anything - I found a few kind of related threads on search, but didn't think this was quite similar enough to warrant a necro)

But you.....DID read your own thread title, didn't you?

It's not like he hacked your account and deleted your character (which would totally justify squealing on him) but fighting fire with fire won't work very well here, I'm afraid. (I am well aware that you now face an afternoon full of re-installind and re-adjusting addOns and you do definitely should yell at him or something, thoug)

If you have to take your revenge with his computer, how about a program that completely blocks his computer and has him type something like "I am a true asshole for putting my peers into hours and hours of work for no reason" or similar sentences (they can be selected on random) each time he starts up his pc?

If you don't have a lot of experience with computers, I wouldn't recommend any REALLY complicated pranks. You could really muck something up.

WoW doesn't take that long to re-install. Just laugh and move on.

Sorry, having thought about it, that wasn't necessarily the problem, it's the idea that you feel it's cool to get on and delete stuff from others' computers - from what I understand, he does shtuff like this (with data and other things in the real world) relatively regularly. I'm more looking for something that gets the idea of "it's not really OK to get into other peoples' things" across (as previous hints to that end haven't really gotten across).
...Preferably by doing so myself. Yeah, this plot wasn't thought out very well.

Do you have access to his computer? take a screen shot of his desktop, and move everything into one of his folders. Then set the background as the desktop image. Watch as he goes crazy.

But I once knew a dude who was trying to get a point like "dont fuck with my computer" across to someone. He logged onto their computer and deleted one small .dll file every day until they got the point. Or their computer stopped working. Not really sure which came first.

..so.. wait, you're the dumbass who didn't lock your computer down, and you've now learned a valuable lesson about computer security, and you want us to help you trick someone who probably has locked his system down?

Shove a straightpin into his ethernet cable. That should be fun.

I'd recommend you install a tool like Upside-Down Ternet or something if he's still using your router on a regular basis. If you don't want him to use it anymore, change the SSID, possibly set the router to not broadcast an SSID.

Then hit him with a brick.

The point isn't to make his icons vanish, the point is to make it look like everything is normal, but when he double clicks on them, they're just background, and as such, nothing happens. Why can't I open my 'Porn' folder? CLICK DAMMIT! THE FOLDER IS RIGHT THERE!

Also, in the actions of your trying to revenge-ify against his computer you accidently bork (eg: editing a start-up file to display 'Stop fucking with other computers' and over-writing something else entirely) it, think that'll be the end of things?

I would like to state for the record that things such as this never turn out well.

I would say talk to him. Communicate that while you were (yes were is past tense) upset you are over it and forgive him. He'll be disappointed that you're not raging. You can't fight fire with fire when your house is made of straw and his of bricks. Fer real if he knows more about 'puters than you do it's just a bad idea don't even try. SRSLY!!!!

Then LOCK YOU SHIT DOWN (period).

Err, it sounds like if you get into a computer prankery contest with him, you're gonna lose. I would suggest not escalating things.

Just change your routers details so he can't get into it, make sure you have a password on your computer, and tell him you'll break his legs if he ever sets foot in your room ever again.

If you were to do something, I would make it something that's not very obvious so that he doesn't fix it right off the bat. From what I've gathered, anything he notices is going to be easily fixable. I remember reading somewhere (I think on another thread) about a guy who replaced his friend's background with a .gif of the same image that flashed something else for a fraction of a second every half hour or something. Or maybe you could open up his computer and superglue a little bell on the inside, if it's a laptop.

Don't use the computer for revenge. Stick his underwear to the dorm door with glue and an explanatory note. Why should revenge be the same medium? (unless you're Christian - eye for an eye doctrine is all about that).

Except that it's not.

I'm going to support cutting him off from use of your router and locking down your own computer. Lesson learned, yes? Of course, ask him what the fuck he was thinking, but launching outright prank war may not be in your best interest.

Low-level format his hard drive + backups.

Also, Jehovah's Witnesses when he brings a girl in.

EDIT: Also also, lock down your router and secure your computer. Preferably using a retinal scanner + thermite strapped to the underside of your chair.

OK, first of all, secure the system. Use WPA on the router.
Since you don't know what else he might have fucked with (keyloggers, etc), consider the system compromised; back up anything you want to keep, format, and reinstall. Set up passwords when you do.
Now, I assume he's still your roommate? If so, I support the underpants-glued-to-something-public idea. Otherwise, hide a fish or two in his room if you can get access, or just smear something gross and sticky on the doorknob if not. Don't try to fuck with his computer. He's a CS major and you're not. You won't get anywhere.
Alternatively, since reinstalling is a PITA, I wouldn't hesitate to mention to some school staff that he essentially put a virus on your computer. (It doesn't have to do a lot of damage or spread itself to be a virus. It's a malicious program.) I wouldn't go so far as to do both, unless you actually lost something other than time due to his fuckery.

I think everyone in this thread is overreacting, unless I missed something here. Does WoW have some weird feature that makes installing it a pain or something? The prank sounded pretty harmless to me...just prank him back in a non computer medium, talk to him about it, or let it slide, no need to ruin anyone's life over it.

If all my desktop icons suddenly became unresponsive, but my computer wasn't frozen, I would know, without a second guess, it was the ol' background trick, and I have no formal computer education. If you want to use this type of trick, screen-capture the background and use the cap for the new background as usual; however, only delete (or hide, if possible) a program's shortcut which he uses only a few times a week. This way it'll go unnoticed for a while and he'll assume his computer is functioning fine, then when he tries to use that one program's shortcut it won't work and frustration will follow. If you want to be poetic, do it to World of Warcraft's shortcut if he plays.

A better one is to create an extra unwanted folder just for taking the picture - as done by a few people who live on my floor to another person on said floor who habitually left his computer unlocked and unattended in our study lounge. They named it "Horse Porn", took the picture, and then deleted the folder.

Or just reroute all his shortcuts to any web address you want. I've rerouted someone's WoW shortcut to meatspin. Also the Firefox and IE homepages.

Note: this is a pretty fun, harmless, and easily fixed prank, nothing malicious at all. Unless, totally hypothetically, the person uses only Firefox so they don't notice and fix the IE homepage, then they take the computer home and their dad uses it. Their dad who hypothetically uses IE.

Then it's somewhere between hilarious and horrifying. And you feel especially awkward whenever you see them again for the rest of your life. Hypothetically, of course.

Reinstalling WoW isn't exactly that hard. Just do the digital download instead of fiddling with the discs and it's done in a few hours. Might suck if you didn't regularly backup your WTF and Interface folders, but that's why there's that axiom about people and data.

If you really wanted to fuck over a WoW player, you'd get ahold of their account info and delete all their shit completely. As in delete every single item on every single character, and then delete the characters themselves. It'd be one bitch of an effort to get all that back, and I'm not even sure how much the GMs can do to recover an entire account of toons... just getting them to restore one toon is an ordeal in and of itself.

Not that I've ever played WoW, but knowing how obsessed people get with that game, and how nuts I'd go if someone deleted my single player game saves, I wouldn't recommend this unless you want to get stabbed in the face. Repeatedly. For the rest of your life.

Not that that would be a particularly long time.

Re: Turns out fucking with peoples' computers isn't that funny.

Just forget it and move on. Change the codes and names, assume that he's been fucking with more of your shit and reformat. And then just remind him you're a roommate, so you could easily just fucking disassemble his computer and destroy everything of value and you'd never be able to tell without actually disassembling the computer and finding out what's wrong. A perfect example, although I'm not sure HOW efficient it is, is just breaking off a few pins off his CPU.

CS Major does not mean he's a techie, not all the time.

Ignoring my cold rage on your behalf, the rational thing for you to do, is to discuss it with him, warn him not to do it again, because it's a stupid childish prank. And if that doesn't get the point across, like I said, you live with the bastard, so you can do lots to his real life.

[The writer of this post would like to express his very much disdain for the kind of people who fuck with his computer, or his life through the net]
