SNOOOOOOW!!!!!!

Postby OBrien » Mon Feb 02, 2009 10:00 am UTC

It snowed a bit before I went to bed last nigh. I thought "Awesome. If it stays at roughly the same height, I'll have four inches of snow to look forward to when I wake up." Imagine my surprise when I woke up this morning to 12 freaking inches of snow, making everything pretty and forcing my mum and brother, who work in schools, to stay home for the day. The only problem is that me and my sister were both planning on going back up to Birmingham this morning, and now the tube and National Rail are stopped, and my sister doesn't trust her driving enough to spend three hours of driving through this. But hey, why look on the downside when we have all this to look forward to:
Snowball fights with my family/neighbours, etc., etc.,
Building snowmen (or not; my brother says "SnowMEN are boring. Why can't we make some sort of snow dragon or something?"),
Baking a cake, (my Mum doesn't want to go outside so we'll be doing the same things we did when we were all wee chiddlers and stuck in the house, minus all the colouring in, of course.),
NOT going to work/lectures,
Introducing my cowboy hat to snow (I doubt it's made in Texas, or anywhere near the States, but I still doubt it was ever prepared for conditions this cold...),
And when all the fun is had, curling up next to a nice, warm fire...
Spelling and grammar can go screw themselves.

I've got snow to my waist. Bleh... See me complaining? Hell yeah. >:

Snow was more fun as a kind, though. Now it's just a major pain in the neck. Snow melt, then freezes over again and voilà - painmints.

Only twelve inches? Wimp. As of the end of December, five feet of the stuff had fallen here.

Of course, we haven't had any since....

It's also pretty amusing that every forum I've logged into this morning so far has one of these threads. :D

Disclaimer for people NOT from the UK:
Yes, we realise that the 6-12 inches of snow that we're getting here is naff all compared to places like Canada, etc. I also find it very funny that we go to pot with so little snow. It happens so rarely though that we simply don't have any infrastructure to deal with it (or rather we do but it's shit).

Anyway, SNOW!!!

I'm sat in my office wishing I was outside building snowmen. I'm not 25 I'm 5 for the 5th time.

Good for you. Would you like a frigging cookie? It's a lot of snow *for here*. It doesn't mean it's not a pain in the arse for us to try and get around or that it isn't cool to play in or that we don't get to think it's pretty neat because it rarely looks that white and pretty here.

19? Hells no! I'm 9! My 25 year old brother is 5 as well, though. He woke me and my 21 year old sister up and was bugging us to build a snowman all morning. We all wanted to do it, but it was still pretty funny all the same.

Oh me yarm I live in Britain too!

So we go out into our garden (we being my big brother, big sister and my dad), have a wee snowball fight, build a snowman (which my 25-coming-on-5 brother gave a nice pert arse once we told him no, he couldn't make a willy for Mr. Snowman) and then, suddenly, snowballs! Thousands of them (well, two). Our neighbours son and his wife (who were also stranded by the lack of road-access and no public transport) who are in their THIRTIES started a snow-war with us. We were at it for a good half-hour and it was fantastic!

Its actually snowed in bangor, which never happens, ever. judging by the inch or so we have, and the total white out that occured at 10 this morning, the mountains are going to be covered... come on freeze-thaw action!

I work in a school and hopefully we will be closing soon since it may become difficult/dangerous for some staff to get home later when there is more snow (or the snow freezes over).

Unforunately I walk home so I will have to wait a while for the kids to bugger off before I leave or I'm likely to be a walking snowman.

It started off with just little bits of snow earlier today here in Bristol, but it's now snowing pretty hard. It's amazing just how quickly you revert to childlike thoughts with snow around. I've got a constant grin on my face, with is entirely out of character for me. Snow! :D

Yes, this. I've lived in New York, Buffalo, Washington DC, Chicago and Boston through winters. Of those cities, the most likely to shut down was DC, and they did it on a minimum of snow. One winter we got I think about eight inches there and the whole city pretty well shut down for two days. The metro was pretty completely down for most of one of them. In Buffalo, to do the same kind of thing, you need at least four feet over those two days. Northeast cities are pretty hardcore about snow removal budgeting. Boston is a nice happy medium, comparatively. We don't habitually get snow every other goddamned day, the way you do in Buffalo for like half of January and February if Lake Erie doesn't freeze over early in the winter, but we get it often enough that winter is pretty, and that you can actually navigate the city when it does happen.

We just moved to a new house, and now we have a yard... I should so go and make snow angels now. :D

We've got an inch or two, with I think more expected tonight. It's very very windy out there right now (which is a shame, I want to go check my post, but it doesn't quite seem worth it...), and a bit too dark for me to tell exactly what it's doing. There's sound against my window now and then, but I can't tell if it's rain or snow or something in between...

Wow, you all go crazy with a itty bitty bit of snow. Trust me, the novelty wears off when it snows for the fifth day in a row accumulating to about .75 meters and this is not uncommon. We didn't have a day in January over 0 degrees C.

Snow is heavy stuff. Just been rolling some up and down the garden. It's accumulating well, and packing pretty well (due to weight). Going to add more later tonight and maybe take it out to the front of the house to get more (or I might make another one out there and bring that through...).
Plenty of snow left, more growing as I type.

Haha, wow. Crazy northerners

Last Wednesday, we had a bit of ice over all the roads, and everything shut down. Schools were closed for miles, my dad didn't go to work, and everyone was pretty much freaking out. And then the next day it was in the high 60's (in our fake Fahrenheit thermometer). Yay Texas!

It seems like this has been a pretty warm winter so far, but usually we get a morning or so of snow near the beginning of spring. It's not really snow, though, more the consistency of what you get in a Icee or snowcone. I call it "snice" because it's snow + ice, and , "Well, 's nice."

We went snowboating, (Read sledging, in a kayak), taking advantage of the snow falling as dry powder at around 2-3 inches an hour, we made a shovel up and turned it into a big jump, with people getting 4 foot air, awesome afternoon.

When my friends post pictures, I'll put them up on here for all to see.

Yeah, my point is it snowed like hell a couple of years ago up here but it didn't even make the news, and also that that snowman is, like, eight feet tall. I can't exaggerate enough how pleased we were with it.

Here in the south of England, snow is a rarity. We have about 3 centimeters here, which is more than we've had for a long time. School tomorrow may be cancelled tomorrow, if lots of people can't get in. Today we only had about half a school. It's predicted that we will get another 5 centimeters tonight, but they predicted that today we would get 15, so who knows?
