Roll of Stamps: Ideas?

Postby Afrit » Wed Feb 11, 2009 3:25 am UTC

So, I bought a roll of stamps a while back that I thought were forever stamps...they're not. Postage rates are going up on May 11 and I don't really want to use two of those $0.01 stamps to mail a letter then. So, I've decided the best possible solution is to use them all up before that date! I was hoping xkcd could give me some ideas--What's a good way to use 190 stamps?

I don't have anything particularly heavy to mail and even if I did I have no one to mail it to. That's an idea though. Maybe I can find something around here...
I was thinking more on 190 individual letters, though

You should mail 190 individual letters at the same time to the same person. Possibly for Valentine's Day?

you know those forever stamps are a racket anyway... they put them in place to get everyone to run and buy stamps at once, knowing that most people would lose them or just never get around to mailing that many things.

i'd go to one of those book exchange sites and get rid of some books. or at least post and see if someone there needs stamps.

you could also probably donate them.

when i have old stamps i just double up on them. yeah, i'm paying 74 cents to mail a 49 cent letter or something like that, but it's actually worth it to me to not have to go out again and buy extra little weird ones to make it exact.

I don't know if I can write 190 letters with such a short deadline. I think I'll write shoot for 30, though. Thanks! :D Love the idea

I second this idea. It could either be great or a total failure. Either way, it's not boring.

I've heard you can go to the post office and use stamps as currency to pay your bills.

I'd do this just for the hell of it...

Wait, you're too lazy to stick an extra stamp ($0.02 stamps exist and will easy to get now) on an envelope, so you'd rather waste $81?

I adore forever stamps. I buy about 20-30 stamps at a time, and then keep them for ages, so without forever stamps, I'd have to buy a lot of smaller stamps with postage increases. Forever stamps are basically invented for people like me, who mail out 2 or 3 things a month at best.

This, or send 190 letters to a prize-draw thing. You still won't have much of a chance at winning, but you'll have 190 times more of one than most people!

Send letters to impossible addresses (Different planets, mythical beings, ficitonal worlds etc) and see how many get returned to you and how many disappear into the postal system.

Alternatively, write an address on a post box, then cover it with stamps.

Social experiment? Send three people a letter with 62 stamps in it and tell them to send half the stamps to one person and half to another. Rinse and repeat.

Not sure what you could do, but maybe the six degrees in reverse? I.e. see how far you get, have the final recipients email you?

You'll still have one stamp left though.

Put the roll in a box and weigh it. Then find the postal rate for that weight. Stick as many stamps as is required to cover that. Put my address on the box. If you don't want them, I'll use them.

Mail 190 letters to the same address from someone else's mailbox. (Is that legal? I guess it's fraud of a sort. I dunno, whatever, I don't think you'd get in to too much trouble as long as the letters don't contain "objectionable content".)

A possible expansion of this, send this one person a letter of 190 words, each word on its own sheet of paper, in its own envelope.

Or you could send someone a letter of 190 characters and do it that way. Depends on how sadistic you are.

Bonus points if you can make those 190 words or characters into a "your mom" joke.

Send the smallest envelope you can which is big enough for all the stamps.

Also the stamps are over nine thousand nine eleventeens!

Mail companies with various frivolous complaints, like the fact that choc dot crispies are no longer made. I mean, what the hell, man. They were a damn good cereal.

Pretty much 300 love letters were sent out to random strangers (obviously you have a lot less stamps). I think that's pretty awesome.

Give half of the stamps to a friend. Mail him a letter and have him mail it back to you (with a new stamp). Then, you send it back to him (again with a new stamp). Repeat until no more stamps left. If the letter gets lost, start with a new one. (Actually, you should do this with several letters, so you actually run out of stamps by May 11.)

The Queen of England? That'd be pretty cool. Was it sent by her personally, or just by her office? Somehow I don't think you could send a letter to President Obama and reasonably expect to get a hand-written reply back from him, but I guess that's not quite an equivalent comparison, since President Obama is our country's leader, while the Queen is something of a figurehead? Not really sure if we have a direct equivalent here in America :(

It'd be funny to pretend Obama was your pen pal, and send him letters every few days updating him on what's going on in your life.

February 15th, 2009

Dear Barack,

My cousin visited today. He has a new girlfriend named Kara. She seems nice and friendly. They were visiting her Aunt and Uncle who happen to live just down the road. Small world, isn't it? How are things in your neck of the woods? It must have been difficult moving so far away from your extended family. Do they ever pop in just to say hello on their way somewhere?

We sat down and had scones. They were nice; my grandma makes some great scones and they're always the best when they're fresh. But I guess you don't often have scones. Especially not made by your grandma... What do you have, like, professional chefs that do that sort of stuff? Except for when you order hotdogs from downtown when you're on the road. I don't like hot dogs so much. They're not too popular in Australia. At least, not as a take away food. You can buy them to make yourself. If I'm boiling water though, I think I'd choose 2 minute noodles every time.

Oh, and hey, you were on the news again! Is it weird seeing yourself on TV all the time? I'd freak out if I heard myself making some speech while I'm trying to eat dinner. But then I guess you probably don't need to watch the news, you must know all the stuff they're going to be reporting on what with all the information you get. That'd be pretty neat. I could watch a movie with dinner and not miss out on a thing! Speaking of which, we got Day of the Jackal today, I think I'll watch that tonight. Thank goodness you're not the President of France or you might be scared hearing that! :-)

Anyway, I'd better stop taking up your time. Write soon! I know you're busy but I haven't heard from you in like, forever.
Best Wishes,
InstinctSage"
