Your Internet Consumption

Postby Number3Pencils » Tue Feb 17, 2009 11:20 pm UTC

How much internet do you use?
Edited for clarification:

DON'T count time that you have to use the internet for work.
DO count time when you're at work and reading the internet but it's not work-related.
DON'T count time when your computer is running some program via the internet but you're not paying full attention to it (e.g. Pandora in the background while you do something, a window left open on your computer while you eat dinner).

Use your best judgment to decide what you think counts if you have some sort of ambiguity that doesn't fall under this.

I'm allowing revoting, since this wasn't very clear before. I realize now that I should've split up the Over 8 Hours category, but if I did it now I'd reset all the votes, so we'll just have to deal.

(This all was in the original post:

The internet is addictive. I'm trying to limit myself to one hour a day, but I usually go a little over, and I also don't count stuff that I'd have to do anyhow like responding to emails, so I'm probably in the 2-3 hours bracket.

Fair warning: I may not keep up with this thread, because I'm considering leaving the internet entirely, at least for a while, sometime not too far into the future. But the thread isn't just for me; it's for all of you.)

If you count all the time I spend online gaming, Frozen Throne, WoW, and such, it's around the 6 hours a day range, with looking at it is pretty damn high.....

What constitutes "on the Internet"? Depending on how you define it, I could go as high as 32 hours a day.

Since I work in IT and usually have google / email / instant messaging / and then on gmail / xkcd / instant messaging at home - I'd suspect like 10-12 hours.

I think you should qualify this - as Work, Gaming, Networking(Messaging/Facebook/Myspace/etc), and just internet surfing...

I am like you (IT)
I also have 3-4 PCs/Laptops going at once (I am greedy)
Does this mean I can go past a 100% rating?

Yeah, I'm on the net all day at work, though often it's just in the background while I'm doing other stuffs.
And at home I usually have a laptop on the arm of the couch. If I could have some kind of floating orb with a screen following me around everywhere just being the internet, I'd be set.

Well, I guess to clarify: How long are you on the internet, and not getting paid for it? Basically, I guess you should discount your work day if your job is done via internet. But you shouldn't discount time when you should've been working but you surfed the internet while your boss wasn't looking.

And if you have two computers open, that doesn't count twice. Come on now.

8-10 hours a day at work, probably 6-8 of those are actual legitimate work. Then 0-4 hours outside of work, depending what other stuff I'm doing. On the weekends it varies a lot. And I get my email on my phone which is always with me...

The sad truth- maybe 4-8 hours, the larger figure for weekends. I need more cheap real-world things to do.

Over 8 here.
I'm assuming your counting both working and free time surfing/video games.
I'm online most of my waking moments in some way or another.
But on weekends it's usually way less.

I game six or more hours a day, usually separated into two or three hour blocks by laundry, meals, exercise and other mundane things.

I also have access to the net here at work, and usually spend a modest amount of time surfing/trolling to kill time.

I'd say I'm directly on the internet (torrents and whatnot aren't counted here) six to twelve hours a day most days of the week.

I don't count the time I spend online at work as internet time. I mean, I'm working, aren't I?

Apart for that (and on weekend) about one hour a day. I don't spend a lot of time on the computer anymore.

You still need to define "on the Internet". For example: I've written a number of programs that make automatic edits to Wikipedia. Those programs are active 24/7, so am I "on the Internet" 24/7? Or how about the last three hours? I was writing a program, and was moving between my text editor, web browser #1 (API reference), web browser #2 (testing), plus a couple of clicks over to web browser #3 (Pandora radio) to make sure my background music didn't stop playing. How much "on the Internet" time is that?

More than 8 hours for me.
I'm browsing the internet all bloody day, (even when my boss is looking) because my work is largely automated. xkcd forums are particularly easy to get away with as it's lots of test so they assume I'm just reading up on something.

For example my boxx just came over to talk to me as I was writing this post, I didn't even take it off the screen.

8-9 hours, I'd say. Weekend use goes up or down depending on how many interesting activities (or people) I have distracting me.

Damn, I needed to split up the "Over 8 hours" category. Didn't see that one coming. And it's too late now, so oh well, I guess.

I think it would be fairly reasonable to define it as "having most of your attention taken up by something you're looking at on the internet". If you're listening to Pandora in the background, don't count that. If your Wikipedia program is running 24/7, don't count it unless you're paying attention to it.

I'm going to put some clarification in the OP, and also allow people to change their answers. That doesn't reset all the answers, does it?

The great thing about surfing, is you can do it while listening to music. I find it hard to do either one just by itself (although I've learned to just "listen to music" when I can manage to catch myself in the right mood. That's a different thread though)....but together.......you can just keep going for hours. It's kind of scary.

This one time, my laptop's power adapter fried, but it took me days to diagnose the problem (the light still worked). I thought my machine died on me. That was the most productive IRL week I've had in months. Sigh.

What do I put if I have my schooling on the internet?
I said 3-4 for non-school time.
Would be a lot more counting school, though. Maybe ten?

I usually spend 4-5 hours, more on weekends, but I'm really trying to cut back. It's just so much easier to stumble one more site and lose track of time than to do any work.
