Hokey Pokey

Postby krazykate » Mon Mar 09, 2009 12:53 pm UTC

stand up and do the hokey pokey right now. If you can't do that much, stop reading now.

put your right hand in, take it out. put your right hand in and shake it all about.
now do the hokey pokey and turn yourself around.

What i'm curious about is which way you turn and why. I turn clockwise. Does everyone else turn clockwise too? do you turn counterclockwise if you're in the southern hemisphere?

I've been conditioned since a very young age to ALWAYS turn clockwise when doing the Hokey Pokey. Seriously, I get chills and muscle cramps if I so much as think about turning left. I can't say any more for now, or I'll start getting the flashbacks again.

Clockwise. In fact, it's always clockwise in response to any sort of generic instruction like "spin around" or "turn around."

Clockwise, in the northern hemisphere.
Funny thing is, I'll go clockwise for this, but if you just tell me to spin around, I'll go counter-clockwise. Hmm.
(I've also always called it the Hokey Pokey.)

Me too. Looking at wiki, it looks like Cokey is the UK version and Pokey is the US version.

And clockwise.

i heard the guy who invented the dance died recently, it sucks.

what's worse, the funeral was a shambles, they had such trouble putting him into the coffin.

they put his left leg, then took it out. they put it in, then out, then shook it all about.

Northern hemisphere, and I turn clockwise. I think that's because I'm right-handed, though.
Also, thank you for making me do the hokey pokey. One cannot be sad/bored while doing the hokey pokey. It's a proven fact.

I'm not convinced that handedness makes any difference, I'd turn clockwise and I'm left handed.
Oh and I forgot to mention, I'm on the Northern Hemisphere as well.

Northern Hemisphere, right-handed, counter-clockwise.

...There can't be any reason behind this. It's like folding your hands. Now which thumb is on top: your writing hand or the weaker one?
Or crossing your arms across your chest. Which arm ends up on top? Strong arm or weak one?

Clockwise! But for some reason I take my right hand, hold it up by my head, and move it in an anti-clockwise direction at the same time! I'm in the southern hemisphere and right handed.
Also...which version of the song do you guys sing??
At the end, I've always sung, "and thats what its all about", but my grandparents sing "knees bent, arms up, ra ra ra" or something like that O.o.

It's hokey pokey, It's clockwise, because that's the way you turn in these things like the Macarena, line dancing, the nutbush (I APOLOGISE FOR NOTHING). And that's what it's all about.

Another 5 points for the coffin wrongness. That was indeed awesome, also thought it was serious til the last line. Then I groaned.

Both of them are in the song aren't they? or do we have a completely different longer version. To save confusion I shall write it out:

Nah, firstly we sing the hokey pokey down here, and the last part is 'and thats what its all about' over again. My grandparents are from the UK though, so I suspect its one of those pesky cultural differences :P.

Anti-clockwise (Aus, southpaw).

But I'm conditioned by English country dancing, which dictates that you must turn acw first.

It's the hokey pokey here. And no ra-ra-ra-ing.

I'm intrigued by the way this thread has attracted Brits and Aussies like a magnet. Your foreign ways confuse and frighten me. For example:
mrbaggins wrote:You put your ____ in, you put your _____ out
You put your ____ in, and shake it all about.
You do the hokey pokey and you turn around,
That's what it's about!
The only body part I can think of that one can "put out" is one's eye. What are you teaching your children?!

Also: clockwise, right-handed, northern hemisphere, 20/M/FL, Cancer/Sign of the Dragon

It's almost too amusing to enlighten you but the Hokey Pokey is a group dance, done in a big circle. The in and out are in and out of the circle.

EDIT: I can think of other ways to put out...

Huh?

I meant, it shouldn't be "put your ___ out", it should be "take your ___ out". That's how I learned it, and, as an American, I am confused and frightened when I discover that other people have different customs. Also, I interpreted those lyrics as an incitement to children to put out their eyes.

EDIT: In case it's still not clear, yes, I'm familiar with the Hokey (P/C)okey.

Well I think to really match the spirit of the lyrics, all body parts must be completely detached so they can be put in/out of the circle.

Pokey, Put, Clockwise (I think we also kinda jiggle our arms at our sides at the same time), Australia, Right-handed, Female, Blonde, etc......

Oh, and no 'ra ra ra' for us, either... that's just weird. I can't even think how that line would fit in with the song O_o

On a side note, when doing the chicken dance, do you start right handed or left handed? I'm a righty.
