How do you sit?

Postby ninjacore » Tue Mar 24, 2009 4:11 am UTC

I felt the urge to start a topic and this interests me greatly.

I personally use the one leg crossed but I tuck my foot under my thigh. Then I switch legs every so often.

I left out otter, etc. because IT SKEWS RESULTS!!!

EDIT: You can choose 2.

EDIT-2 (thanks to roc314) you can choose up to 4

Should allow multiple choices. I wouldn't say I prefer any one over the rest, but there's a couple I use fairly equally.

I tend to change every few minutes. 1 minute cross legged, the next stretched out as much as possible, the next sitting on the chair back leaning forward, the next kneeling on the floor.

I cross my legs, although I think I probably shouldn't since I've heard that it leads to bad circulation; varicose veins; etc... I switch between right over left and left over right, although I think I'm most comfy with left over right.

I very rarely cross my ankles and find it nearly impossible to do that foot resting on opposite knee thing... my leg just doesn't stay up there!

Preferably with legs stretched out in front of me but crossed at the ankles.

I sit cross-legged with both feet under my thighs whenever I can, even in chairs that are obviously not made for that purpose. I suspect this may be the reason I break chairs so much, particularly the four-legged variety (as opposed to, say, a computer chair with a central column).

I change my sitting position very frequently, though, cycling through both-legs-crossed, right-under-left, left-under-right, fully-stretched-out, and legs-tucked-beneath-chair (chair permitting).

I most often sit with my calves folded under my thighs, sitting on top of my feet, if this will fit with the chair I am in.

For typing at speed, I sit in the ideal/model position (feet on the floor, legs straight, sitting upright).
For playing games, my feet are crossed on the ground (Occasionally the above If it warrants it).
For reading or anything that doesn't require much attention/speed, I lean against my chair and put my feet up on my bed or put one leg up on the bed bent so that my knee is over waist height with other flat on the ground. However, this usually gets uncomfortable, so I swap positions every 30mins or so.

As for favourite, I like the proper seating position because it's fun typing much faster than normal and the rest have their problems.

That reminds me, I want to get a new chair; this one should have been thrown away years ago. The one time I used one of those kneeling chairs, they were surprisingly comfortable; I might buy one this time around.

I sit cross legged pretty much all the time, even on computer chairs, but in lectures I tend to sit with one leg tucked under my thigh. I have also been known to kneel on computer chairs, when I'm getting particularly frustrated with assignments and I feel that being closer to the computer is going to make it clearer =P.
Also, I'm the one that just clicked that I use a kneeling chair! My dad got one because he has a bad back, so its the one thats in front of the computer in my house. Its nice and comfortable :).

Usually one leg tucked under me, but I constantly shift and switch because one foot will go numb. Other times, I turn the chair sideways and sit. I alternate between resting my left arm on the backrest or just leaning against it.

If the chair is at a desk, I sit with both feet on the floor, but cross my ankles. I alternate between stretching my legs out or putting them under the seat.

Finally, if possible, I put my feet on other things. This includes ottomans (ottomen?), another chair, and the rungs under my chair or other chairs. This also constantly changes.

...Have I mentioned that I'm fidgety?

Either two feet on the ground, parallel or one leg crossed resting on thigh. Sometimes two legs crossed, feet on ground (or one dangling).

When I was twelve or something I got in a habit of perching on chairs like that. From what I recall, it was more fun for the novelty. Plus you can pounce up like a chairninja. Which is a big plus.

I've recently decided to trial holding phones like L. Maybe for a month or so. Just to see what it's like.

It's, uh, it's working out pretty well, I'd say.

This. <3

Depending on whose company I'm in, I usually sit with my legs parallel or with "the back of my knee" on the other knee, sort of. If I'm alone, there's "ankle onto foot", L's style, "knees tucked to chest"... oh, or the lotus position.

When sitting on the floor, it's usually one of the latter three.

As for general L-iness, I too hold my phone like him. <3

Hard to type? Perhaps with a normal keyboard, but with an ergonomic keyboard, I don't have any trouble. If you want really warm, add an oversized sweater you can tuck your legs into.

Got a picture/description/other? Given how much I shift position, I probably use it occasionally and could tell you.

As for positions, I'm presently sitting with one knee under my chin, and the other leg resting on the modesty panel of my desk. I tend to change position a lot, and at any given time I may be
1) Cross-legged with my feet under my thighs
2) Knees up against my chest.
3) Kneeling, both feet under my butt (rare)
4) Both feet hooked behind two of the legs of my computer chair (think kneeling chair, but with my thighs almost parallel to the floor)
5) Sideways to my chair, using the back as an armrest
6) With both feet on the corner tray of my desk (sometimes combined with (5)
7) With both feet resting on my desk in front of my webserver (this puts me at a 90-degree angle to the keyboard, but is the best reclining posture I can manage)
8) With one leg a) under my butt; b) under my opposite thigh; c) against my opposite thigh; d) on the floor; e) under my chin; and
9) the other leg a) on the floor; b) on the modesty panel; c) on the corner tray; d) on the desk in front of the webserver (see (7))
10) and probably other positions I've forgotten.

Above picture is similar to how I sit generally, only I normally have my butt on the chair as well!

Sometimes I stretch my legs out in front of me if the wall is close enough for me to push my feet against it, or put one foot down.

Why the great interest, ninjacore? I'm idly curious while brushing my teeth.

The poll doesn't differentiate between crossing your legs at the knee or the ankle. Supposedly both are bad for circulation, but crossing at the knees particularly so. I have a small spot of vericose veins on my right calf just where I always used to cross my right leg over the left, so I've gotten out of that habit.

I cross at the ankles, and alternate between having my feet stuck out in front under the desk and tucked in under the chair.

On the sofa I tuck my legs in under myself.

My boss has a kneely-chair, and is quite fond of it, as one last useless bit of info.

When I sit "correctly", it hurts my tailbone. So I tend to switch between good posture and various equally-uncomfortable positions of poor posture, including foot-on-knee, foot-under-thigh, leaning-forward-with-elbows-on-desk, slouching-with-ankles-crossed, sideways-with-knees-crossed, sideways-with-feet-drawn-up-by-hips and this thing I do where I sit, either straight-backed or leaning-on-elbows, and with my feet up on tiptoe and hip flexors taking the postural strain. I really, really need to get out of this habit - I walk like I'm 80 years old when I stand up again, because of the stiffness it causes in hips and feet. Need moar yoga...

At my desk at work (or on any computer really), I sit mostly normally (legs parallel, balls of feet on ground, usually heels are off the ground).

In non-computer chairs, I tend to rest my right leg on my left thigh.

When sitting on the floor, usually indian style (legs crossed, feet under thighs)

I tend to perch. In particular, my most common position is to be sort of kneeling while sitting on my right foot and leaning forward using my left leg as support. Keeps my feet off the cold floor. Probably the most horrible thing imaginable for my back posture though, I'm basically hunched over and not even using my back to support the weight.

Generally something inbetween sitting and lying down, and changing positions once a minute because I'm uncomfortable. I don't know how to sit in a way that's comfortable for a longer time. It kind of sucks.
