Help! My Guinea Pig is Injured!

Postby Feddlefew » Mon Aug 17, 2009 3:20 am UTC

I was cleaning my Guinea Pigs cage out, and I noticed she was acting funny, so I looked at her paw, I noticed that there was something stuck in it. I pulled it out, but I don't know if that was the right thing to do. I finished cleaning her cage and put her back in, and we're taking her to the vets tomorrow, but is there anything else I can do?

If it's not bleeding or leaking any other fluids, she probably just needs peace and quiet to help her heal. Let the vet take a look, but otherwise leave her be. When she's chipper again, she's probably healed up enough to get back to normal.

She's stopped bleeding now, and she ate a little.

Sounds like she'll be fine. The vet will check for signs of infection and let you know if there's anything you need to do. She'll probably be back to normal in a day or two, once it's healed and she's feeling fine again.

Thanks. I haven't had a Guinnea Pig hurt before, and I know they're fragile animals. She's also old, about 6 years and has ovarian cysts which can't be safely removed.

That would explain why she's acting scared. Older animals (including humans) don't heal as quickly as young ones, so they're always more cautious when they're hurt.

I'm still worried about her. I also feel guilty about it.

Their soft little paw-pad sometimes get stuff stuck in them, or whatevers. I freeeeeaaaaked out when my hamster ripped a claw out! He was leaving little bloody footprints all over me! I just washed him off, changed his bedding and put him back in his cage. I checked on him a few times but in a couple days he was good as new. A vet visit probably isn't needed unless its check up time anyway. =] If it gets infected, definitely go.

He's fine I'm sure. Put some Neosporin on it and let the guy be. give him a blanket or something so he's not gettin gpine shavings/pine dust etc into the paw which will irritate, have him on a non-slippery solid floor for a few days.

/me is a rabbit breeder and cavies (i.e. guinea pigs) go along with that, my friend raises silkies.

Sungura. That photo has made me feel awe :O
It's so adorably cute! >.<
And yeah, so far as I can tell, although everyone's said it, she'll be fine.
Yes Sungura, it's a girl :O :P
Just teasing :)

And just because I don't think another thread's needed, I'll boast about my only time of saving an animal's life! :)

My guinea pig, flash, was pretty old. Can't remember quite how old, but pretty.
She was in her cage, and me and my brother heard her choking to death! So I ran over, and had a look, and I opened her mouth (gently) and I could see something at the back of her throat! So I ran over to my dad's little keyring pen knife, took out the tiny pair of tweezers, and opened Flash's mouth. I managed to get to the back of her throat, and pulled out what turned out to be a bit of slimy rotten lettuce-she couldn't chew it up, so she must have tried to swallow it whole.
She died a few hours later though-but I suspect that was from shock, because I made sure I hadn't hurt her when I took the lettuce out.

But yeah-my proud moment :)

My Guinea Pig is back from the vets. I have to soak her foot in epsin(SP?) salts and give her an antibiotic every day. She's nibbling on her food, but she hasn't been eating much.

By the way, that is an adorable picture Sungura.

You did everything you could for her. You even took her to the vet which most people wouldn't have done.

My mom kills my pets with good intentions. My guinea pig, Spazz McSqueakers, met his untimely death after she read that they like grass and like to be outside some (supervised, of course) and run around and stuff... so she thought it would be nice to set up a little pen for him while she was outside as well... not knowing my step-dad had just ant-poison and fertilized the lawn.

Thats not a call you want to get a work. =(

I'm sorry, the death of pets is always hard. At least she died in the hands of someone who loved her, and you gave her a good life. I think that's all any of us can ask. :(
Poxic is, like, awesome. She's my favorite.
