Re: Awesome Thread (to balance Rant Thread)

Postby Dobblesworth » Thu Oct 21, 2010 11:09 pm UTC

So I'm now into my third year of uni and with that my third year of membership of the Cambridge University Assassins Guild - a society eccentric, popular (~1000 freshers signing up provisionally to mailing list a year, 200+ players potentially in a single term's game, and biggest guild in comparison to our Durham/Leeds/Sheffield rivals) and established (going back nearly two decades now) enough to get the attention of a film crew of the Japanese national TV broadcaster producing an episode of some global expose documentary focusing on Cambridge.

For two/three hours this evening, myself and five others in the guild hung out in the environs of the film crew's hotel-of-choice in Cambridge, leisurely drinking our way through a bar tab, and filming a variety of assassins scenarios. These Japs were awesome enough to have read our guild's webpage in advance and swotted up on our ruleset, to plan out shots and scenes to indicate the Cambridge Guild frowns upon:
- wearing a balaclava or other such unnerving attire
- stalking your target through a pub or other civilian location while openly bearing a six-shot Nerf revolver
- cosplaying/cross-dressing as your college bedder (housekeeper/cleaning lady) [any by extension other college official or higher echelon of power who has right of entry] to gain access to your target's bedroom
Also done were representations of a good honourable take-out of your assassins target:
- wooing your target, sharing a romantic evening on a park bench, before drawing a killer attack tyrannosaurus plush to assault the other player
- ambushing your foe as he walks along a passageway and incapacitate them with a giant club fabricated out of newspaper
Both those events I happened to be the target concerned. It's quite fun to do a dramatic stage death when going down onto tarmac car park.

As a shot for the 'opening credits' they wanted the six of us lined up against a wall, first with weapons concealed, then on cue, a plethora of water pistols, rubber band guns, plastic daggers and Nerf rifles suddenly emerge from behind our backs or from jacket pockets. The lighting setup made it look the corniest cheesiest thing I had seen in a long while, and I loved every minute of it.

Awesome evening to justify my membership of an awesome society, and the ~£40 I've spent enhancing my arsenal for it in advance of this term's game.

edit - ooooh pagetopper, awesome!

Please don't use "Japs."

But otherwise, sounds like a thoroughly awesome time. My loyalty is always going to HvZ, but Assassins is a pretty rad game too.

Yesterday was awesome. I spent the evening on my deck barbecuing a steak, drinking an old fashioned, listening to local radio and reading a magazine. Hell of a way to relax.

That does sound awesome. Sadly, it has just become too cold in this part of the world to sit out on a deck grilling steaks. I think next summer I need to invest in a tiny grill to put out on my fire escape, then sit out there and read all day.

Yea, I think yesterday was probably the last day of the year that I could do that. Sad face.

Grats on the new wheels!

I'm being forced strongly encouraged into sitting through the entire Homecoming game between Mizzou and OU. Mizzou scored a touchdown in the first 30 seconds. That was pretty cool.

Close. But instead of shooting at my family I'll be shooting with my family.

Very awesome: I finally have a date sorted out to get my new hair done! It's gonna be dreaded at the back, the sides shaved off and the rest cut to about 8 inches. I also found out that the lady who'll be doing it for me is also willing to dread some of the hair tht's gonna be shaved off and attach it to the dreads that will be on the back. It'll be done on Wednesday. :D

Not awesome: It's costing me £70. While this is the cheapest offer I've got and the person seems to be the one who knows most about what she's doing, this is a lot for someone who is earning £80 a week at the moment to cover food and bills. OK, I've managed to scape it out of three weeks wages, but it still seems a lot to hand over in one go...

Not very awesome, but still quite awesome: Yay! Pizza's done!

Awesome: I was able to workout today (mmmmmmm!), got all my homework and studying done, and just generally feel as though I have got things under control.

Not so awesome: the feeling of apprehension I have, because this is always the time when I figure out what I missed.

REALLY awesome: I am going to make cookies and watch star trek now! Yummy! :D

Awesome: (again assassins related, sorry)

Running down a long road on the outskirts of Cambridge, in a loose mob of 10+ fellow assassins, chasing a target who, due to a few misguided kills made on others, is a "wanted" target for the entire playerbase. So yes, charging along an empty street at full pelt after him. In my case, bellowing "For the Emperor!", while unsubtly dual-wielding loaded and pumped Storm 750 water guns. We didn't get him in the end, but that buzz of feeling of potential combat after he somehow slipped through our noose of a stake-out about his house, reminds me of the reason I signed up to this soc.

Went to homecoming on friday and it was somewhat fun, I saw a few people I havent seen since they went off to uni and I got to see a girl I am infatuated with be on the home coming court. I spent all of today(sunday) working on fixing my computer and it was super fun and I spent yesterday catching up with my best friend and it was a good time. Such a great weekend overall and the best part is I am extremly happy.

I had an awesome night out on Saturday, some really good music to start it, then a few drinks afterwards with high levels of silliness and general merriment.

Also, one of my friends is being a surrogate mum, which is really awesome in a crazy kind of way.

So I was playing a pick-up game of basketball, I having been talked into this by a group of young'uns who arrived on the court I was doing my physical therapy on (shooting basketball, switching hands each shot). They were, at least, a decade my junior. There was also only one of these kids who was even close to my height, and I still had five inches on him. I felt like Shaq in his prime playing against a JV team.

The reason this was Awesome Thread material? Not a one of those kids gave up. They kept trying and trying, they'd occasionally manage to block me out, or force me to pass, but they played HARD. Afterwards each of them came over and thanked me for playing, and thanked me for playing hard. They said it was good training for them.

I haz a happy.

It was. They were running traps, zones, everything they could think of to try and stop me from getting to the hoop. On offense, they were trying picks, screens, everything. I still won six games to 30 by ones, but it was a good time.
