First of all, the vast vast majority of girls turn into women (magically!) by the time they can produce breast milk.
Second of all you (generic 'you' haha!) kinda have to have a baby or buy a breast pump and use it enthusiastically to start producing breast milk. If you do give birth the kid usually needs breastmilk more than you.
Also, it wouldn't be very productive as you aren't actually taking in any new food that wasn't already in your body (you'd probably just end up producing more breast milk for a net loss)

tl;dr: no, that's silly

Considering the resources requires to produce milk, I doubt they would be in a situation where drinking it would make them not thirsty. If a woman finds herself in a survival situation, she will stop lactating. It's the same with urine or blood; if you are ever in a situation where you are so dehydrated as to consider it, chances are you're not producing much of it. Although obviously, if you just get dropped in the desert, you can/should drink your urine for a few days, so likely this applies to lactating women.

Ever?

Yeah, it's probably happened. But it's not like that's going to be the most convenient choice in the vast, vast majority of cases.

Make sure you distill it thirst. There is a reason why your urine is yellow.

Assuming you aren't dehydrated, you can drink your urine for a few days before it becomes less effective then not drinking it. What I think you mean to say was "there is a reason urine gets yellower and yellower"

There is a reason why your body creates urine - it's waste. And in a survival situation, the majority of your urine will not be water (unless, you are drinking lots of water, in which case, you wouldn't need to drink the urine). You will actually likely use more water to reprocess the urine you just drank and hence dehydrate yourself faster. So, uh, actually, that's a bad idea.

Also, what Osha said. Please, take some basic biology courses before asking silly questions.

ninja'd by izawwlgood - true, for the first day or two it may be beneficial, as there is still water in your body from the day before's proper drinking (if you actually drink enough water anyway, a lot of people really don't drink enough), but after that, the energy and water it takes to process it outweigh the benefit.

It's worth pointing (in this this pointless thread) that men can also produce breast milk.

Only after a lot of effort, I'd assume. But I thought men didn't actually have the proper glands for producing milk. Just vestigal nipples that do nothing. I also have not taken the time to look up whether or not it's possible because the only use I can see for it if that's true is being a neat/weird party trick: "Hey, men can make breast milk too; I'll prove it!"

Yes, obviously if you have the materials in place to do so, you do that. That's like saying "If I was starving on a desert island, I'd just open my backpack full of K-rations and eat"

Actually, it is possible to have a backpack of rations on a desert island (lifeboats have rations on them), and most desert islands actually have food on them, as well as mice, fish, etc.

Not to mention that these are actually quite different. The equivilent to having a backpack of munchies on an island is having a backpack of waterbottles in a desert. What you may have wanted to say was that it was like saying "having twine, and metal that can be shaped into a hook" on a desert island (also possible)

But really, it depends.
-if you had a parachute... hey! Nylon/plastic!
-If you had a survival kit (which is possible)... hey! (possible) garbage bag! (possible) containers! maybe other things.
-if your car broke down in the middle of the desert... well, air bags have plastic, tires... quite the motherlode, actually.
-with military gear: see survival kit
-if you just had yourself, and the cloths on your back: unless the desert flora is available to you, I agree. Distilling urine is out of the picture. In fact, you are likely screwed either way, unless you are an expert on local fauna and flora. (We are assuming Sub-Saharan, right?) In any case, drinking urine raw will only make things worse

Did I mention that Urine is salty? Urine typically is 2% salt. The ocean, for reference, is 3.5% salt. The process of osmosis will take water out of your cells, increasing the rate of dehydration. You may as well be drinking from the ocean. Any survival guide, ranging from the US Army survival guide to the Zombie Survival Guide will advise against drinking raw urine, even if it is the only liquid available.

I mean, you can drink it if you want, but keep in mind that if there are 2 people, one drinking urine, in the desert, the one who isn't drinking at all will still be alive to spit on the Urophagian's grave, and still have the spit to do so.

Puttering around, I've found a variety of wholly less then reliable sources putting the osmolality of urine between 200mOsm/Kg and 800mOsm/Kg, claiming it will be lower if water was imbibed prior to urinating. Human plasma ranges from 275-299mOsm/Kg, and while that is not a really good measure one way or the other, it indicates that, like I said, if you've recently drank some water, and are magically plopped in the desert with no solar still or K-rations, drink your piss.

Furthermore, the wikipedia page on Urophagia mentions that although a number of survival guides advise against it, the dude who ended up sawing his own arm off survived by drinking his own urine (a pretty legit endorsement if you ask me). I'm ignoring the part about Bear Gryllis trying it.

So yes, I know that urine is salty, and yes, I know that drinking salty things results in dehydration. I also know that if you are well hydrated, your urine is LESS salty (surprise!), indeed, enough so that you have a net gain of water. And yes, a solar still is preferable.

So... happy?

I can agree with this.

Although I think we can agree that the odds of someone being hydrated enough for this to help them and then becoming stranded is very slim.

To be honest, I have no real explaination for how Aron Ralston (the guy who cut off his arm) survived by drinking urine.

Umm to get back on topic...

I guess the question can be divided into two different reasons for drinking. "Do girls ever drink their own breast milk to stave off hunger?" Would be the first, and it is an obvious no. The energy needed to produce that milk comes from their own bodies, and drinking their own breast milk would result in a net loss of energy. And if they were the only ones drinking it, they could just stop drinking it so their bodies stopped producing it.

The other is "Do girls ever drink their own breast milk just for kicks/because they like the taste?" To that one: I have no idea. I'm sure someone somewhere has done it. Crazier things have happened. I'm sure if you scour some creepy porn site you'll find some video of a girl drinking it. Maybe there is a convention you can find on craigslist or something.

I've heard that men often (maybe not often, I don't know) take a taste of their wife's breast milk when they're lactating. I'm sure women on occasion do the same, likely out of curiosity... I feel like it would probably taste really gross to non-babies.

Take this with a grain of salt, as being the only test i know of, it is pretty much just anecdotal, but: My neighbour took a sample of his wifes breast milk and sent it away to be analysed when he was having his cows milk tested and it came back about 6%protein 2%fat, so roughly twice the protein of cows milk and half the fat. considering what processed milk tastes like by comparison to raw milk it would taste really watery and slightly bitter/foul. I'm not sure what the lactose portion was however.

Sure, nowhere on Earth is as bad as Arrakis would be, but it would still be useful and save lives. Would make a stroll around the sahara a picnic.

A friend's mother said when she was breastfeeding, both her and her husband tried her breastmilk.
They said it was like sweeter milk. I imagine the particular taste depends on the person and their diet.
Also, quite interestingly, she said that when a lactating women orgasms milk is produced.
That was, er, when the anecdote stopped, thankfully.

USE PUNCTUATION DAMN YOU!

I spent about 10 seconds wondering what the hell women orgasms milk was, and how lactation produced it.

See kids, that's "when a lactating, women orgasms milk is" versus what I can only assume is correct, "when a lactating women orgasms, milk is"

Look, all I'm saying is that as far as I know, the only things that one sex can do that the other cannot involve menstruation and prostates. And even then, I'm not 100% on either one, so I wouldn't quote myself on that.

Don't drink urine. Furthermore, don't drink distilled water if you can avoid it either.
If you've got one, pass your urine through a reverse osmosis pump (though it'll still taste a bit like wee, you'll die less).

And stillsuits work primarily through ignoring how evaporation works.
