Creepy Childhood Nighmares/Dreams that Weren't Creepy then

Postby Internetmeme » Sat Jan 02, 2010 8:09 pm UTC

Alright, tell us your childhood dreams/nightmares that you remember, that weren't creepy in the way they are now.

I'll start:
When I was little, my sister got this little clown doll that you buttoned the shirt, zip'd its sweater, and tied it shoes. Eventually, I had a nightmare about the thing terrorizing me and my mom, and kidnapping my sister.
Then, a couple years ago, I learned about Chucky. What's worse, the doll actually resembles Chucky.

In one of my dreams (which was definitely not a nightmare in any way), I was walking by some trees, the ground was covered in foliage (like an Indian summer). In the corner between some trees sat a panda through the leaves was a blinking eye, which I knew belonged to a stegosaurus (that was covered with leaves).

Also, I once dreamt I was falling, and I died, and my dream continued on to my funeral.

I die in half the dreams I remember. Sometimes the dream even continues in the afterlife.
In the first months after my grandfather died 5 years ago, I often dreamt about talking to him.
Which is strange in a way, because I don't actually believe in an afterlife.

More creepy: I once dreamed my right hand was pinned to the mast of a ship with a knife, and I couldn't move with my other arm and had to free myself somehow (there are 2 ways to do this, and both are really painfull and will probably make you disabled for the rest of your life). This nightmare bothered me for weeks after.
Years later I learned that this was a common punishment for sailors who got caught in a knife fight.
I still feel nauseous when I think of it.

When I was about 10, I had a dream that one of the drawers in my room had a bunch of odd, round-ish rocks in it. I picked a red one up, and the "rock" uncoiled, reveal itself to be a baby Death Adder (Acanthophis pyrrhus). I let it crawl docilely around my hand for a while, then the dream ended.

To this day, I still have a weird desire to own a pet death adder (like the dream, they're actually very docile - and incredibly lethal). This actually happened with another dream-snake, the not-at-all deadly (but unfortunately rather rare in captivity) Rhino rat snake (Rhynchophis boulengeri).

My recurring nightmare was:

I walk into my room. It's dark and a little bluish. I flip the light switch, and nothing happens. The dream ends.

The funny thing is, that actually happened to me a few years later when my bulb burned out, and it wasn't scary at all, like the nightmare was.

I very commonly have dreams where its dark, yet I can still see... So I try to turn on another light only to find out it basically doesn't help at all because it's so dim... One of my creepier dreams was I walked into my mom's bedroom and only the TV was on, but it was muted. I tried turning on the light, and it didn't work. The entire house was very dark. Only just light enough so that I could barely see my way around and imagine what's hiding in the corners... So I went to my room and I turned on the light and it was extremely dim. I turned on my computer screen, and it didn't work... I turned on a space heater, and then I woke up in about the same place I was in my dream, which was very creepy...

Not really creepy but still weird.

My friend and I are in the Civil War (U.S.) and charging this hill, On top of which sits a 7/11. We reach the top go in and proceed to shop. I pick up a doughnut nut and it starts yelling at me in my other friend's voice "No don't eat me!", so I set it down and go over to the drink counter. I pick up a cup with the face of another friend on it and it starts screaming at me too. Dejected that everything is yelling at me my friend and I pick up our muskets and return to chasing down the Rebs.

Anyone have different dreams that take place in the same "dream space"?

Yes, it certainly feels that way.
I have a dream, and have a feeling that I've already acted out a narrative in that area.
It either gives me prophetic powers and I know what will happen or it spoils the dream completely while I wander aimlessly looking for something familiar.

The very beginning of "They", where the kid disappears, and then they find him in the doghouse? Pretty much the exact same thing happened to me, except I was hiding under an overturned laundry basket in the living room when they found me, clutching scissors. I was fleeing things in the darkness that were trying to drag me into the closet.

Then I saw "They" years later, and it all came back to me, and I was afraid of the dark for probably a year.

When I was young, maybe 5 or 6, I had recurring nightmares that came to a sum total of everything dying, except me and some other moderately odd thing.

I would later find that I could most associate the dream with a world following some nuclear catastrophe, specifically Pripyat in the Ukraine.

I also recently had the same set of recurring nightmares, except this time it was quite specifically a nuclear explosion.

The dreams I have I don't realize that it's in the same place till I wake up. Also some times people in my dream tell me to wake.

When I was really little I only remembered one dream that creeped the hell out of me. I have a cousin who is a few years older than me and like a sister. I dreamt that she was being chased by giant nutcracker men and a person in a bunny costume with a knife. There was something about a mirror too. I was around 6 or 7 and have never forgot that dream.

When I was younger, my father told me that the China Cabinet got its name because little Chinese dolls would come out at night and party in it. Later that month, I had a strange dream involving the China people and North Korea. I occasionally have a flashback when passing the cabinet in the mornings before caffeine.

When I was 8 I had a frequently recurring dream that I was a prisoner on pirate ship. It didn't mean much to me other than I enjoyed it, and I knew it was pretty messed up. 10 years later I realize I'm totally into being dominated. The subconscious is a weird place...

FYI, you can't change the ambient light level in your dreams because it is affected by the light on your eyes. So light switches *never* work in dreams. (and it is a test you can use to see if your dreaming)
