Help me come up with a business name

Postby eristic » Wed Apr 21, 2010 4:11 am UTC

Hi all! I'm starting my own consulting business that is in the realm of computer network security. My specialties include packet and network traffic analysis, reverse engineering, computer forensics, and overall IT "cyber" security. I am poaching you all to help me come up with a business name.

Some existing company names just to get your brain going are Confluent Logic (okay...), Bit9 (very creative and geeky +points), and Cyber Defense Solutions (kinda lame). It doesn't have to exactly be tied down to just the areas I named as I am finishing my degree in Computer Engineering, so that can be put somehow into the mixing bowl as well. When I see a name that either a)is my business name or b) spawns something that gives me my business name I'll paypal the winner $50 USD. I'll be holding another similar contest (rewards again) for designing my company logo.

So, I humbly accept your ideas and post away or PM me, whichever you prefer. Thank you for your creative ideas.

No ideas for names, but just wanted to say you may want to be careful if you plan on reverse engineering software. Thems murky legal waters from what I've been informed.

(N.B.: I have not checked whether any of these names are taken.)

Bytewise
BitBurn
Pipe Dream(1)
Fat Electron
Impedance(2)
4ier(3)

(1): pipe in reference to Unix pipes, and the whole thing in reference to a utopia where security isn't even needed because there's no malicious intent.
(2): in reference to electrical impedance and impeding black hat hackers.
(3): as in Fourier transforms.

Reversing in reference to companies hiring me to reverse malware found during a computer forensic analysis. Nothing related to reversing legitimate software.

@link: I like the ideas so far, lets keep it coming!

Reverse engineering legitimate software can be fine, too, depending on why you're doing it. Quite a lot of companies have old software that was written by a developer who is either no longer available (dead/retired/quit/too busy) or who has forgotten what he wrote in the first place, which can be a complete mess of code with little to no comments and no documentation. In that situation, the company may well be prepared to pay someone to reverse engineer their old software and rewrite it in a more transparant format.

BitTrap
WireSnoop/WireSpy/WireWatcher
Packet Hunters
Hack N' Trap Industries
iCatchpeopletryingtogetintoyournetworkandshowthemwhatfor! (it's been proven that no matter how shitty a product is, or how crappy it's name is, if you put a lower case i in front of some word, people will buy it)

Just some ideas that sprang to being.
I have a natural tendency to jump to alliterations.

I actually hadn't thought of the first one, and totally forgot about the second. Which is funny, because that's what I did my first few days at my last co-op.

Some good ideas thus far. Keep them coming please. One more thing, this is for bidding on DoD contracts so anything too playful or black hat is a no-go. I'm compiling a list of all suggestions thus far so please keep the suggestions flowing!!

Maybe CyberEye or DigitEye, as a play on Private Eye?

What about DigitEyes, a pun on digitize? I just thought about that after jdsb suggested 'DigitEye'.

I think the key points are, Proffesional sounding, Clear company purpose, and Memorable (especially if you can get the matching website.)

Take one from column A and one from column B:
Names that mean computer related:
E
Electric
Electronic
Cyber
Bit
Comp(uter)
Robo(t)

Names that mean security:
Samurai
Knight
Dog
Hound
Guard(ian)
Lock(er)
Safe
Keep(er)
Protect(or)
Errent
Ronin
Block(er)
Wall
Ward [Sadly will probably be misheard as word so makes a bad website name]

Name ideas that already have a website:
Cyber Samurai
Cybersafe
Bitguard
ELock or ELocksmith
complock

Names that have an open website (I think, I've never started a website):
Netdog
EHound

And my favorite so far: RoboRonin

BandLight
Raptor Defense Solutions?

Fresh grad, (implied) no experience? Good luck dude. I'd recommend working for a cybersecurity firm for a while, then starting your own.
