Not allowed in my country??

Postby captainwalrus » Thu May 06, 2010 8:33 pm UTC

So, I was on youtube. I clicked on a different video from the one I was watching and it took me back to the homepage and said that that video was not allowed to be watched in my country (the US) because it was from Sony. Why is this? Has anyone more aware than I seen this before?

Some copyrights only extend as far as national borders. Outside of the US, this page is rather common.

We can't get CATV in the US. Which means I can't watch Flashpoint online. Which is terrible.

I get the "this video cannot be watched outside of the US" screen all the time. Maybe turning it back on americans is sony's way of shedding light on the problem so that companies will stop being such dicks about it.

I doubt that Sony intentionally only restricted it the US. They would probably restrict it everywhere if they could but their copyright is only enforceable in the US (and possibly other countries, but not all), thus "restricted in your country"

As others have said, I get that all the time.

Not to get all schadenfreude on you, but I do find it immensely satisfying to see this particular form of dickery turned back on the US.

Indeed. Similarly to how Iron Man 2 premiered here before the US.

Guys, why won't you just try using proxy? UK proxy for instance? this might work :)

I doubt there are very many public proxies that offer bandwidth sufficient for youtube.

Also, it stands to reason that most public proxies are information-harvesting honeypots.

I read that the GeoIP location is done by connecting to a server on a separate domain, and you can edit your hosts file to work around it. However, that didn't work when I tried it.

It's most likely done server side, and not client side.

I find the effort involved in finding a good, functional public proxy and getting it working is far more annoying than simply not being able to watch the odd video on YouTube, personally.
