So when 2012 comes and goes, what's the next Doomsdate?

Postby King Author » Mon May 10, 2010 12:37 pm UTC

'cause I'm gettin' pretty sick of 'em (sorry for the apostrophe abuse). 2000 was kind of an obvious one, being the millenium and all. 2012 is based on white college students misinterpretation of ancient Mayan belief systems, but is still based on something. In 2013, what new Day of Destruction will bad action flicks and worse internet rumors start touting? I'm hoping it's not 2020, because the puns, man...death would be preferable.

I know Newton tried to get an apocalyptic date from the bible and got 2060, but none sooner.

The site A Brief History of the Apocalypse says the next one is 2017:

The "Prophet Gabriel" supposedly told the Sword of God Brotherhood that the "dying time" will come in 2017, and only members of the cult will survive. Everyone else will "perish in hellfire."

I thought the next one was 2029 with the close-pass by the comet/asteroid/whatever Apophis.

ca. 4,500,000,000 AD - Sun expands, engulfing the earth. The one true apocalypse.

Except that one will be fixed in a few years as we move to 64bit.

For general use PCs, yes. Remember that for embedded systems, it's a little different - there are still 68k processors being made and used, and the 486 has only been out of production for 3 years. And embedded systems tend to have very long product lifecycles.

True. But this is something that people know about, and have time to implement the fix (which is, essentially, moving to 64bit).

Quite true. Of course, it's going to be put off until as late as possible because it's going to be expensive and the people signing the cheques won't want to spend the money unless they have to and we'll probably have a scare like we did with Y2K but everything will be find in the end because we got our shit together and finally fixed a problem that we saw coming a long ways away.

Obviously something before 2112, but not too far before it that a guitar that gets buried in the apocalypse would decompose to the point of not working.

It's hard to say when the next one will be, but it won't take long for someone else to dig something else up. And they'll make a movie about that too I'm sure.

The Church of the SubGenius claims that tomorrow is the end of the world. Have been since the '80s. I believe it. It's a healthy attitude.

Hrmm, are we talking total end of humanity, or just a cataclysm that wipes out a lot of the population, like in Fallout? Cos if it's the later, I suspect it'll happen around 20XX, when Dr. Wily launches his first attack.

Obviously not since we last until at least 25XX when people and reploids are almost one!

These dates also have the nice feature of approaching the 2000th Easter - if you count the years the "right" way, of course.

But 26 years is too long to go without a pending apocalypse, so 2020 it is, just because it sounds cool.

If it fell into the sea, it would be just as disastrous, if not more, than if it hit land.
