I think Flight of the Conchords addressed this issue nicely:
Bret: That's definitely a bit gay.
Jemaine: What is?
B: Putting a wig on me while I'm asleep.
J: I think, sometimes you hear what you wanna hear. It wouldn't be gay to put a wig on a man and pretend he's a woman. How could it be gay if you're pretending he's a woman? Not that I did that.

And David Bowie agreed!

For the record, I only figured out last week that Ian was a guy. That avatar just looks so... feminine. Then I saw some normal pictures, briefly noticed the avatar beside them, and had a "...whaaaa?!" moment.

Sort of like how I briefly thought SecondTalon was a girl, with the pink avatar and all. You people have such misleading avatars!

Oddly enough, my avvy is of a male anime character who just happens to be a video game character played by a female.

I think it's a .hack thing. It's a franchise (anime, manga and video games) about an MMO. So probably Xeio's avatar is actually a male avatar in the MMO, and the "person" who plays it is female. I'm pretty sure that's it because the face paint looks familiar, but I haven't seen any of the anime.

As for Xeio's sex, I have no idea.

That's correct. Though, to be fair, you don't find that out until the end of the series, as for the most part the series takes place in the game, so you only see the avatars interacting.

No, it's not the wheel of time, because the men and the women don't instinctivly hate each other. And while it takes a long time, it actually has an end.
