Best way to answer email you haven't replied to in too long?

Postby Idhan » Fri Jan 14, 2011 11:45 pm UTC

What do you think is the best way to reply to an e-mail you meant to answer three days ago, or a week ago, but for some reason didn't get around to answering?

Do it all casual like "Whoops! Should've replied earlier. Anyways, about those anti-velociraptor bullets..."

Self-flagellate a bit: "I am SO sorry I didn't reply earlier. I can't BELIEVE what a worthless miserable stain on humanity..."

Pretend nothing happened: "So I find that for the 9mm anti-velociraptor bullets, you can get them $5.95 for a box of 20, whereas if you're going for 45 ACP..."

What do you think?

Hey, sorry I didn't reply sooner, but for x reason I didn't get around to it until now, anyway, about those velociraptor bullets...

I think your mistake is thinking that 9mm rounds are even going to slow a velociraptor down. :D

Seriously though, I normally go for basically option 1 (in effect, what Dthen said), unless it's an email which really urgently needed a reply, in which case I'll be more profuse with my apologies.

EDIT: Is 'more profuse' a tautology?

So we have to deal with velociraptors and anti-velociraptors. . . that wield guns??!! Oh shit.

But yeah, just be straight up. Like what Dthen said.

Either this, or pretend you did send it on time. "Hey did you see news item this morning? Anyway ..."

I don't think so. 'There can be differing levels of profuseness. As opposed to 'more perfect', for instance.

Make sure you remind him that he sent an email, most probably he already forgot that he had sent it.

you could always send him an email reminding them to respond, as if you replied and they did not, may drive them crazy looking for it though.

If it isn't a very serious e-mail I would do this. Makes for entertaining conversation later.

Just say, "Sorry it took me so long to reply to this," or, "I apologize for not replying earlier to your email." You don't have to give the person a reason for the delay unless it's a close relation (wife, mother, etc.) with whom you communicate regularly. Or, I mean, a client... but there's no good tactic if it's a client.

"My apologies for not responding sooner. For anti-velociraptor bullets, I'd recommend..."

Even with a client or family member, you don't need to make excuses, so long as you acknowledge you should have responded more quickly, and apologise for that.
