Misconception: ROM has at some point stopped meaning "Read-only Memory"...

On this note, I saw an advert for some kind of PC shop, selling desktops with "3 gigabytes of memory". Now, I assume I was meant to assume they meant RAM, but given they didn't give any other figures that might be attached to ROM, and I'm old enough to remember the days when 3GB was more ROM than you could possibly dream of what to do with, I'm not exactly sure if that's an assumption I should make.

My Windows 98 had a bit over 3 GB. It was an all-in-one too. Don't exactly know what the norm was back then.

Bump for delayed rant.

Who/whom.

It's really not difficult, people.

Here are various tutorials.
I'm just going to sit here and rub my temples for a while, okay?
Also, you cannot just add "be" to the front of a verb without changing its grammatical usage. It doesn't make word cute, or romantic, or oldy-worldy, it changes the meaning and the tense. Beholder = the one seeing, beloved = the one being loved. Using those kinds of words willy-nilly will only make me want to hit you.

I really hate it when people say "Computers speak in binary". That's kind of stupid. That's the same as saying we speak only in letters. Strictly speaking, we do, but go more advanced and we have words and sentences - and grammar.

Also, any scifi show that twists this into "Computers do not accept a middle ground", as if every possible course of action is a single switch in it.

No we don't. We write with letters, we speak with sounds.

Wow reading through this and I found someone just like me!

Misconceptions:
1. Because I am a juggler means that you can sing that annoying clown tune at me.
2. It also means that you can try and throw extra juggling balls at me while I'm juggling.
3. I will run away to the circus.
4. If I am juggling you can pick up one of my juggling balls and say 'Hey look! I can juggle!' and throw it in the air and catch it.
5. I care about teaching you after you give up after a second.
6. If I'm nervous and juggling, you can come and talk to me.
7. You can make a ball-related joke. (seriously people, I've been juggling for 5 years now)

*breathes* Thank you. =]

In history class we were using the computers and the teacher told us to "turn on the internet" when he wanted us to open IE. I actually laughed out loud. Nobody else seemed to find this funny.

Except 6. Why don't you want that? New people to talk to is an awesome thing.

I laughed. My mom tells me to unplug the internet and calls my friend Catherine 6 network cable an extension cord.

Heh,

If the sig fits, wear it.

But to flesh out my post:

When you say something to a group of people, and for whatever reason they dont get it (i take great pains to make sure i'm not being pretentious) then the next course of action as per human behaviour is to ridicule the person who is not understood. Its a very irritating habit that people have to ridicule something they dont understand as long as they are in the majority. I get that all the time. Nice one, so you are the idiots and im the one being made fun of? Why do we reward ignorance and spite intelligence!

In hindsight, this should have gone in the rant thread - sorry.

It's not anti-intellectualism, per se, I think. Because in that same group, if the majority understood something to the point of thinking it was obvious, the one or few who didn't get it would be the ones getting made fun of.
Unless stated otherwise, I do not care whether a statement, by itself, constitutes a persuasive political argument. I care whether it's true.

Misconception: Because I am a physics major and female, I must be "smart". Women from my hometown always seem to make this comment after asking me what I study. I mean a) I never said I was good at it, and b) enjoying science doesn't make me good at anything else.

Today in lab I was responsible for grossly misconnecting an oscilloscope to my equipment, and then wondering why I wasn't getting any square waves. (Answer: I unhooked the input in one section in order to use that cord somewhere else.) Grades are not the only indicator of intelligence. While I happen to like numbers, I would die within hours if left alone in the wilderness.

Why are only certain skills associated with "smart"?

Usually because they are difficult to obtain or are poorly understood by the general public.
