I had a dream about flying a Korean Airways plane around everywhere I could go, including into a shop to grab some random crap to stuff into the gas tank so I could keep going. There was a rock song playing all the time with the single phrase "just can't wait" repeated over and over.

I'm sure this is a metaphor for the fora. Um.

If you didn't laugh at anything someone other than yourself posted in this thread since it began, then XKCD is possibly not the place for you. If you were more curious than amused, do what SecondTalon said, and lurk moar. If you've got time to post you've got time to read, else you'd just be doing something that doesn't involve a keyboard.
I hope?

This is a well-organised set of message boards, more or less, broken into different subject areas. See that link near the top of your screen called "Board index"? That link will take you to the highest level of organisation. You can see many, many different areas of interest, and click on whichever one suits your fancy.

Now that you've found a board that looks kind of interesting, look at the topics listed on that board. They are listed in most-recently-posted-in at the top, so the most active ones are probably at the top of the list.

Click on one that looks interesting and read the posts. (If the thread is very long, say more than six pages, you can get away with reading only the first three and last three pages.) Is the current discussion, the stuff being talked about in the last page or two, interesting and relevant to you? Do you have something interesting and relevant you'd like to add, or ask? Then go ahead and post something there.

You'll find an awful lot of threads, and often entire boards, where there isn't much that interests you or to which you can relate. That's totally fine. Figure out which threads you like and hang out there. Read a lot, and post occasionally when you have something new and interesting that you think other people will want to hear.

Do take some time to read the "announcements" threads, and the "stickied" threads about rules (they're at the top of each board and have a lightbulb-shaped icon at the left). They're something like FAQs and can be useful.

Hope this helps,
poxic

You didn't lurk enough. Nobody ever lurks enough.

I lurked for six months before joining, and the fora were a lot smaller then. For an example, search for the time no-genius died.

xkcd about unrelated things like cute lagomorphs and double-handed war axes. IMO Topics in xkcd (specially General) have more pages than most forums I frequent because it's so amazing. Even xkcd haters like staying on this forum. Even those who don't read xkcd stay on this forum, and even those who read xkcd stay on this forum.

RainbowTwink wrote:Can someone enlighten me what people discuss on these boards? I seriously just registered for the board for fun. I have no idea what is going on. I am being serious. I still can't figure out what people discuss here. Hence why I've posted on stuff I know(sex, drugs, gender, Britney Spears, Jersey Shore, etc)

You seem to be under the impression that just registering for fun" is unlikely or uncommon. But, why? In my experience, there are a few main reasons people register and post: to comment on a comic that struck them in a particularly strong way; to ask/complain about something related to the homepage, a store order, an app, copyright, etc. in Site/Forum Issues; in search of a community for discussion of topics including but not limited to romance, sarcasm, math and language; or because they are curious and/or bored. Of those four categories, the most transient users tend to belong to the former two. I myself first visited as a member of the latter category, discovered the impending Dream Girl meetup in my neighborhood, and was quickly converted into the third category.

Most everyone who sticks around long-term is here in search of a community. The comic provides a fairly simple way of describing a broadly-defined region of personalities. It does so more implicitly than explicitly, which allows people to self-identify as an "xkcd type of person" according to their own interpretation of what that means; this makes for a more inclusive community than might otherwise form, which in turn makes for greater diversity of subject matter discussed here on the board.

The most focused, on-task users on this board are probably those who confine themselves to a particular subforum with a particular focus; for example, some people register for the sole purpose of posting in the Meetups subforum in order to connect with other users in Internet 2: Fleshzone Boogaloo. Everyone else is just here to have fun in a setting that includes other people, which means they're here to participate in a community.

So, we discuss things; anything and everything. You've posted this thread in General, which as a rule is one of the more frenetic parts of the board. But not all the regulars around here are regulars in General. Some are old farts who prefer to mope around discussing the good old days before all those rassm-frassm new folks showed up and turned General into a goldfish. There are sub-communities that have formed around particular areas of discussion and in their corresponding subfora you may find a more specific answer to your question than is available in General and on the board in its entirety.

tl;dr: cocks cocks cocks

The forums are magnets, just dont ask me how they work.

Lurking is a key aspect of the forum from what I can tell. I lurked for a few months before coming here and I read the forums almost every day. I dont post that often but I try and post when it adds to the conversation and when I can write coherently. Try that, it might be helpful and integrate you into the community.
