Of Japan and Bananas.

Postby Adapa58 » Tue Mar 22, 2011 5:39 pm UTC

Hello all, I know this is a bit of a strange introduction, but I thought you all would find this amusing.

While reading through the image on the recent XKCD blog post about radiation, a friend of mine pointed out that if you ate 35 bananas, you'd be exposed to the same amount of extra radiation as the people living in the towns near the Fukushima plant.

Given our unending support for Japan in these hard times, I obviously accepted this challenge of solidarity.

I will post more pictures once the deed is done, assuming I survive.

Other points aside: 0.1µSv * 35 = 3.5µSv << 3.6mSv.

I'm going by the numbers in the picture, which says 3.5µSv.

But if you still want to be picky about it I'll buy another tomorrow, shops are closed now.

Anyway, just finished with my sixth. No radiation burns yet.

In that case your Radiation Dose Chart differs from mine, never mind.

Careful bananas are likely to, well to put it bluntly, give you the runs. Honestly I'd rather live by the power plant than try to eat 3 dozen bananas. Good luck.

Osmotic laxative? Or physical lubricant action of the polysaccarides? XD

Either way, good luck buddy! We're all pulling for you!

I just approve of your use of Icelandic. And Icelandic bananas are delicious (no lie- biggest banana producer in all of Europe, thank you geothermal greenhouses). So eat a bunch of them.

Earthquake or bananas, the effects of radioactivity are likely to be the least of your worries - there are other dangers of eating too many bananas. http://www.mirror.co.uk/news/weird-worl ... -21130644/

"Organiser Chris Swan had hoped to enlist 10,000 people to scoff a million bananas - 100 each - in just 24 hours."

100 bananas in 24 hours? How is that even physically possible?

Mission accomplished. May all your hearts and bananas go out to Japan in these hard times.

Apparently the area where I live (Selly Oak) has a pretty high background radiation anyway due to a big coal seam beneath it and a few other factors (I'm not quite sure what that means we have higher than background radiation, but I heard ot from a Physics PhD student, so I trust his word). From what I've heard, the background radiation is about the same as near the power plants right now, what with the workers being pretty fast with containg it and all.
I'll try the 'nana thing anyway, when I have the spare money.

That article from the Mirror is pretty funny.
Organiser Chris Swan said: I can't believe you can become ill from eating fruit - bananas are supposed to be very good for you.

Eating a piece of fruit can be very good for you Chris. Eating 100 pieces of said fruit in 24 hours - probably not a good idea. Too much of anything is bad for you - except makin' de love, of course.

No, too much of that leads to chaffing in sensitive places. Yeah, there's lube, but sometimes you don't realize there's a problem until it's too late to prevent it.

Dosage from one banana:
0.1 µS = 0.0000001 S

One day's dose in Japan:
3.6 mS = 0.0036 S

See the problem?

Except he was using the "Extra dose from one day in an average town near the Fukushima plant (~3.5 µSv ..." number and not that of the two isolated sites (~3.6mSv).
