1000th XKCD Comic

Postby Fire Tock » Sat May 07, 2011 7:26 am UTC

Hello Forums first of all, I'm a long time reader of the forums, commonly for explanations of certain comics. But, with the most recent comic being comic # 897, it made me wonder when the 1000th comic would be released. And I know this is nothing, well, no work at all compared to the work you do, but I just found a simple calculator and decided to find out when it would be posted. And the date is (if Randall doesn't have a week of 5 comics in a row until then, or doesn't lack any.), the first Monday of 2012, January 2nd, 2012. I'm sure you've all probably personally gone and figured this out and haven't found it nearly as exciting as I do, but hey, just a discussion for it.

Will make it before the apocalypse hits, provided that the Mayan Death Hex does not decide to strike right on the first of January instead.

Is also 1/2/12, for those month/day/year people out there. Might delay the release of the comic by twelve minutes to obtain ones and twos.

I would go for 12/1/2 1:21, just one hour delay.

Perhaps #1000 isn't very significant....

at least, not in comparison to #1024!!

... which will be on 27 Feb 2012.

Which means that #0b10000000001 will be on a leap day.

So we've got #0d10^3 as the first comic of 2012, #0b10^10 shortly thereafter, and #0b10^10+1 on Leap Day 2012. Any bets that Randall will do something unusually special on any or all of those three dates?

This conflicts with the calculation given in the OP, which means that I must calculate this by myself. And it comes to 6 january too, with #1024 at 2 march. So what mistake did the OP mean, or did some event happen that changed the schedule?

You are, of course, calculating the date of comic #1000, not of the 1000th xkcd comic. Depending on what you include in the count, #1000 will be the 989th, 991st, 994th, 996th, 999th, or 1001st xkcd comic. (The basis for these numbers is, of course, left as an exercise to the reader.)

The OP probably hadn't accounted for comics updating more than three times a week (like the occasional 5-days of comics).

Panel two of comic number three hundred fifty-three. Depends how you define "panel", however. Found comic twenty-four to be difficult to judge. Counted thirty panels (the most of the first three hundred fifty-three comics). Claimed comic one hundred forty and comic one hundred twenty-one to be two panels and three panels, respectively. Marked comic one hundred ninety-nine as one panel and comic two hundred twenty-six as three panels.

Made a pie chart, also. Encompasses the data from comics one to three hundred fifty-three.

Related to that, I wonder what the ten thousandth word was...

Roĝer wrote:Related to that, I wonder what the ten thousandth word was...

Notes on word classification:
- Did not count numbers and math outside of dialogue as a word.
- Considered a date as one word.
- Classified in-dialogue mathematics and numbers as one word.
- Treated all units as one word, separate from a number.
- Lacked consistency in company names, some product names, and links.
- Took stabs at coding.

Examples:
Spoiler:
Comic one hundred eighty-four: Zero.
(Comic two hundred seventeen) "(e^pi) – pi is 19.999099979": Three.
"19 m/s": Two.
"In the year 1998": Four.
"Dodge Viper SRT-10": Two.
"Int getRandomNumber": Two.
"0x3A28213A": Zero (despite being dialogue).

Ten thousandth "word": "15%" from comic two hundred twenty-eight.
Least enjoyable comic: number one hundred twenty-four. Counted two hundred seventy-four words. Contained the most words of the data set.

Mean: 43.96491 words.
Median: 31.5 words.
Fit line equation: y = (.16831 * x) + 24.69341, where y = "Words" and x = "Comic Number".
A graph:
Spoiler:
XKCD Words Graph.jpg

Oflick wrote:Not to mention the thousandth letter.

The "i" in "mistake", from comic seventeen. Read the bottom right circle last.
Oflick wrote:Also, what was the thousandth vowel?

Declines. Does not wish to deal with "and sometimes y". Also lacks sufficient need.
Oflick wrote:The thousandth syllable?

Hates determining the number of syllables. No.

Applies to all data sets
- Ignored comic titles.
- Disregarded alternate text.
- Included no further comics in the data set after reaching the desired milestone.
Roĝer wrote:I wonder when the thousandth sentence appeared.

One thousandth sentence: "Sometimes it seems bizarre to me that we take dreaming in stride." (Comic two hundred three)

Sentence classification
- Counted an interrupted sentence as one. Ignored any resumed sentence.
- Classified sets of a Venn Diagram as one sentence per set. Did not count the data within the diagram (in this case).
- Categorized each step on a flow chart as one sentence.
- Did not count "(Phrase): (Image)" as a sentence.

Examples:
Spoiler:
- "But—": One.
- "But—" "Yay for cake!" "But what is it?": Two.
- Venn Diagram: Three.
- Flow Chart: Fourteen.

Maximum: Comic one hundred twenty-four. Was probably too generous. Outdid second place (number twenty-four) by twenty sentences.

Pie chart:
Spoiler:
XKCD Sentence Count.gif
XKCD Sentence Count.gif (6.13 KiB) Viewed 8344 times

pseudoidiot wrote:Or the thousandth frame.
Already counted panels. Estimates a difference under fifteen. Might have been a better standard to follow. Does not wish to count nearly the same thing again, however.
UniqueScreenname wrote:Thousandth time the word "the" was used?

One thousandth "the": "The convention you’re setting for electric charge is backward." (Comic five hundred sixty-seven)

"The" classification and notes
- Did not count "there", "they", "their", "ether", and other similar words. Must specifically be "the".
- Did not count the interrupted "the".
- Probably missed several instances. Counted fifteen on one comic, double checked to get fourteen, triple checked to get fourteen again, and then received fifteen again on the fourth check. Tends to skate over it.

Example:
Spoiler:
- "What th—AAAAAAAAAA…": Zero.

Maximum: Fifteen (comics one hundred ninety-nine and four hundred seventy-two).

Pie Chart:
Spoiler:
XKCD The Count.gif
XKCD The Count.gif (7.14 KiB) Viewed 8344 times

Has begun skimming words outside of the comics to search for the "the"s. Requires rest.

That was the starting point for my numbers, yes (the lack of #404 will make #1000 then 999th numbered comic on the site, and if you include the two (that I know of) IBM "A Smarter Planet" comics then it's the 1001st.) The other factors that I was taking into account have been hinted at in this thread, but that's all I'm saying for now...

I propose we compose an algorithm to determine the subject matter of the Nth xkcd comic. Will it be from Jersey? Will it kill Jesus? Will it find Jeeves? Only time will tell, but I believe Terrance McKenna's "Timewave Zero" software may be a good place to start. This is close.

We've already had a strip for that. I also think calling it "dishonesty" is taking it too far, but we already have a thread for that.

We also already have a thread for comic 1000 speculation.

I've been of the opinion that someone should have (or still should) make a movie of shorts involving all of the first 1000 comics.

I think a movie of such magnitude would be mindblowing...

Eh... it can still be done, even if not in time for comic 1000.
