Alcohol

Postby offramp13 » Fri Jul 06, 2007 10:28 am UTC

i got really drunk tonight, and I am only fifteen. It was with my dads alcohol, mostly whiskey. I ended up breaking his shot glass, and then getting caught. He drove my two friends home and thats the last ive seen of him since. Tomorrow morning will suck pretty bad.

Haha. Yes. Or you could get off "lucky" with him not saying much and just staring at you with an offended/amused/superior look now and then.

I assume you've had little to no experience drinking. It's probably not a good idea to start on something so strong. Real men drink beer anyway.

real drinking is something that takes time to learn. here in england we spend years fine-tuning our drinking abilities. most people tend to start on hard spirits, but this is a mistake in my eyes - may i suggest that if you do insist on getting leathered at such a tender young age, cider might be a more sensible option.

but obviously i in no way endorse underage drinking.

No! Drink more.

Drink enough that any potential you had gets washed away before you graduate high school. Drink enough that you lose all the friends and family that actually might care about you -- your new drinking friends will be so much cooler anyway. And don't forget to drink enough to get a few DUI or an aggravated assult too, because nothing says manly more than alcohol related arrests.

Anyhow, go for it.

@offramp13

I am curious/conducting a one-response survey...

Are you allowed to drink (a little champagne or a beer, etc.) at family functions, or do your parents have a strict no-drinking policy with you?

I don't know about you, but I drink because I enjoy two things that contain alcohol, Scotch and Beer. When I'm drunk, it's because I've enjoyed too much. Every once in a while I'll get drunk just to get drunk, mostly because I also just enjoy being in altered states. There's not usually a lot of self-loathing there.

Seriously, though. The OP should stop drinking until legal age.

I'll secong that. If I'm in a relaxed environment, and I don't have to worry about driving, I just lose track. I love a wide variety of alcoholic beverages. Also, I don't fall over or slur when I'm drunk, so sometimes I don't really know how much I've had to drink until the morning (ouchies).

I might add...you never really feel old until you've had your first two-day hangover after drinking half the amount you did in your youth.

No, I drank before I was out of high school. Hell, I was drinking at xher age. However, having done it doesn't mean I can't say it's a bad idea. I got tons of crap from my parents for it, and my rationale is that it boils down to this: It's going to be scandalous. Even if the OP (exemplio gracia, only) was normally responsible enough to be considered one that could drink underage successfully and responsibly, xhe's still going to treat it as a forbidden fruit, and it's going to blow up in xher face. If you think drinking underage is a good idea, I'd say you have the right to your opinion, but, on the whole, I've come to the realization that kids (and most adults) are pretty stupid about most things, and especially about what they know they shouldn't be doing.

I'm over 21 and I still haven't drank yet, but that's just me. I've had nothing but bad experiences when alcohol's been involved, so I have no interest to try it myself.

I guess I'm on the opposite side of Bondolon: I didn't do it, but that doesn't mean I'm much against it. Just ... be moderate and careful. Which I guess might be a problem. Which means I might actually agree that it'd be better to wait some years. (But 21 is silly. It's 18 here.)

I wonder, is it a cause of underage drinking to have a legal limit so high it's seen as unrealistic to wait until then? There's something seductive to the line of thought that goes "21 is far too late, so I'll be breaking that anyway. Why not start now?".

That was sort of my point, I just forgot to elaborate. Waiting until you are 21 to drink is just ridiculous. The first qualification should be the mental maturity to understand what you are doing and the possible consequences, which should provide the capacity for moderation. Second, I feel like a good general age to start/be able to drink is around 17 or 18.

And I guess i'm on the opposite side of Bondolon and the opposite side of djn. I did it (actually, I'm still doing it for another week and a half) and I would recommend it.

lol. Eurotrip style - "I'm never drinking again"
Moving right along...
Drinking can be a good time. However, you'll probably get a couple other 'never drinking again' moments before you figure out a few things:
1) What drinks suit you
2) What drinks not to mix
3) What's your limit
4) What kind of drunk you are >.<

Suggestions:
A) Experiment with different kinds of drinks. Not necessarily all at once, that can end poorly.
B) Dont rush it, especially if you're new to drinking. It won't take much to get you buzzed/drunk yet.
C) Tolerance building can be a fun exercise. I topped mine out with a semester of drinking every day >.<
D) While the drinking age is often ignored, it may be best to wait till college-ish. If nothing else, it will prevent more parental issues. Personally, I waited till sophmore year of college.

All of the above is based solely on personal experience, so feel free to ignore it as you see fit :P

@Tank - You're not even 21? Why was I thinking you were a bit older than that...
9 x 6 = 42

Getting so drunk you puke means you were definitely drinking the wrong thing, and too much of it.
Start with beer. And not too much of it, for real. Then by the time you're actually drinking age, you'll have some appreciation for really GOOD beer and liquor.

That's my logic. But I've never gotten so drunk I puked, so who knows.
