What would you buy with $50 billion

Postby A_pathetic_lizardmnan » Thu Sep 15, 2011 5:37 pm UTC

I am writing a humorous speech about credit cards, and in it I intend to demonstrate how much money $50 billion in AMerican credit card debt really is. So I decided to create a shopping list. Unfortunately, after purchasing 1 ton of gold, the houses of Bill Gates, Steve Jobs, Warren Buffet, Oprah Winfrey, and Larry Ellison, a private jet, 9 more private jets, the ten most expensive yachts in the world, a thousand Ferrari 458 Italias, the entire world black market of weapons, the space shutle Endeavor, and an iPhone for every man, woman, and child in Los Angeles, I still have about $40,000,000,000.00 left. How would you spend that amount of money?

I guess I would fund reasearch into self improving AI. For the greater good of mankind and all. Meh.

Or swim in bitches.

Dunno.

edit: A prostitue is, what, 100 USD?
With 40 billions, that's about 10 million prostitutes? More than enough to fill a swimming pool. I suppose they would charge extra, but your funds are still way way sufficient.

This. Or a space elevator, whichever is cheapest. Since the Japanese think they can build a space elevator for $8B, I'll probably have quite a bit left once it's constructed, even if the $8B figure turns out to be a gross underestimation. Supposing I had at least $15B left, I'd then buy an island (ideally a short distance from the space elevator or fountain's launch platform) for myself and a hand-picked selection of others to live on happily ever after. Also, genetically modified glow-in-the-dark tiger sharks with frickin' lasers on their heads would guard said island.

Besides the usual cars/holidays, the stuff I'd go for first is probably a selection of houses in cool places like Monte Carlo, London etc. Also a large country house like this one. Then probably an F1 team, and a selection or science start-up companies to keep me occupied.

For $50 billion, you could probably have a house on Mars. :)

Yeah, this, and add a Launch Loop to the list. Once you get one of those up and running, founding a colony on Mars might be useful. :) Although that may take a bit extra.
Funding various approaches to getting a cost effective fusion reactor up and running. Although if one of the surface to orbit methods above works, orbital solar cells might work well too.
Funding a large scale long-term program to find a cure for aging.
Perhaps help to usher in the post-scarcity era, with a huge development program for automated miners, assemblers, general purpose factories, power plants, self-repair, etc. with the goal of becoming self-sufficient. i.e. that the system can gather all the resources needed, and produce and assemble all the machines and factories needed, including more of themselves, in addition to whatever else you want them to make, without any humans required.

And if any of those work out well, I could potentially use them to fund the others. :)

There's not really much in the way of personal-scale items that I would want that could make much of a dent in that. I mean, I could take 1/10000th of that and just comfortably live out the rest of my life on it. (unless the cure for aging gets solved in that time, then I might need a bit more. :) Although if the post-scarcity thing works out too, then that may be unnecessary. :) )

You could buy eight Joint Strike Fighters for a billion, and they'll probably throw in a care package.

Vatu Vara Island in Fiji was listed at just $75 million, making it the most expensive freehold island in the world a few years ago. That's just a drop in the bucket, but you could put your eight JSFs on it.

A new NASA moon rocket could cost $38 billion. That's $17 billion to $22 billion to ready the new rocket and Orion capsule for a test flight in December 2017 that would put an unmanned capsule into a lunar orbit, and an additional $12 billion to $16 billion that would be needed to launch the first crew on a lunar flyby in August 2021. One of a kind, very rare. You could get to walk on the moon if you financed it.

You obviously aren't thinking big enough, I could name ten 'yachts' that would together eat up your entire budget.

But without all the accessories, they wouldn't be much fun. Instead, you could use ~$50 billion to design, build, supply and crew an entire next-generation U.S. Carrier strike group (including all the fun stuff, like aircraft, support vessels etc.)

I would settle for an antarctic launch pad and as many of the largest Orion propelled launch-vehicles as I could afford.

EdgarJPublius wrote:I would settle for an antarctic launch pad and as many of the largest Orion propelled launch-vehicles as I could afford.

The largest Orion propelled launch-vehicle would be quite a bit:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Project_Or ... pulsion%29
"Super" Orion
Ship diameter 400 m
Ship mass 8,000,000 t
Number of bombs 1080
Individual bomb mass 3000 t

The biggest design above is the "super" Orion design; at 8 million tonnes, it could easily be a city.[7] In interviews, the designers contemplated the large ship as a possible interstellar ark. This extreme design could be built with materials and techniques that could be obtained in 1958 or were anticipated to be available shortly after. The practical upper limit is likely to be higher with modern materials.

Most of the three thousand tonnes of each of the "super" Orion's propulsion units would be inert material such as polyethylene, or boron salts, used to transmit the force of the propulsion units detonation to the Orion's pusher plate, and absorb neutrons to minimize fallout. One design proposed by Freeman Dyson for the "Super Orion" called for the pusher plate to be composed primarily of uranium or a transuranic element so that upon reaching a nearby star system the plate could be converted to nuclear fuel.

every year 30 million people die of hunger, say you can feed those 30m people for $3.65 per head per day, well that's already $40bn in one year, problem solved!

or you know, give them a way to feed themselves, you know, "teach a man to fish" and all that.

I would create a modest, well-designed, efficient, eco-friendly, modern and secure city. Integrate high-end infrastructure like solar panels and high speed internet and public charging stations and maglev trains. Build a university and several research facilities, and house scientists, students, technologists and entrepreneurs. Watch stuff happen.

i really don't think 40bn would buy all that. i doubt 40bn would be able to pay all the people to build the city, let alone actually designing it and materials.

or a few spread around the world at places where intelligent people live, California, Massachusetts, London, Geneva, Japan, i don't know, put up a few dedicated satellites to keep them connected,

you know what though, on a smaller scale, you pretty much described the TV Show Eureka.

I'm actually wondering how much it would cost to build an equatorial particle accelerator, and how useful a particle accelerator that big would actually be.

if all else fails, just donate the 40bn to NASA.

It also depends on how big a place you class as a "city". At a wild guess I reckon $50 billion dollars would build something suitable for 20k-200k inhabitants, maybe even 500k if you skimp on infrastructure. But given that London's latest railway project is forecast to cost over £15 billion, you're not going to get a megacity for that money.

Building my own city with $50 billion could be fun. But only if I got to do it Simcity, magic-wand-of-rezoning style ;)

This thread is likely to make me break out Simcity 4 when I get home. That's a week of my life gone. Again.

1. Build big powerful army with the money.
2. Invade third world country with lots of corruption (Somalia? Burma?)
3. Bring education, health and freedom to that country.
4. Use money generated by the country to invade neighboring country.
5. Repeat from step 3.

Ok first I would recreate Scrooge McDuck's tower and fill it with 10 million dollar in Penny's.
Besides that I would invest in research to actually make me able to swim in money (won't be fun without the swimming)

And if there is anything left I'ld buy Microsoft, Apple, Samsung, Facebook, Google,... and just have fun with the largest IT-company in the world named uhm... "ONE million dollar to the person who invents the best name!"

With $50 billion... It's hard to imagine. I don't think I could run through that amount of money and actually enjoy it if I tried. Sure, I could buy 10 or 20 or whatever of the most expensive yachts in the world and spend it all, but I don't really have an interest in owning even one yacht.

I guess if I'm being greedy I'd try and buy my way into a space flight to the moon, which would probably cost between $20 million and $30 million. After that, I guess it would be down to buying houses or apartments in every major city on the planet in any area I have any desire to visit, with each being large enough to hold the better part of my family should they decide they want to tag along my world tour. Assuming each house costs around a million, there's approximately 200 countries in the world, that brings my total down to... $49,770,000,000.

Holy shit, that's a lot of money leftover to spend. I guess I'd just give most of it out to my extended family so they never had to work. If I give each of them a billion, I'd still be left with more than $20 billion. I guess invest in promising start-up science companies? Maybe? I dunno, I think I'd need to do more research.
The story so far:
In the beginning the Universe was created.
This has made a lot of people very angry and has been widely regarded as a bad move.

I must be an odd thinker. I saw this and thought to my self "House, Car, ~20 Acres of land and stick the rest into a savings/checking account and let it accure interest."

I've never been one for spending A LOT of money at once. I don't even like carrying cash around with me as it is. :? But since I'm having a child in December my focus is more on survival more than anything else.

I'd buy a house outright (My dream house is about $150,000. And that's including all the furniture, appliances and what ever else may need to go in there.) Buy a couple cars outright (there goes another 100K) 20 Acres of land. Uhmmm, That would be about 20-40K if I bought it here in Michigan. So all total that brings me to 270-290K leaving me with $49,999,710,000 left over to do with as I please. Maybe do a month long family vacation or something like that once a year with mini vacations during School Breaks.

They say money can't buy happiness, but I think it's just poor planning on the rich people's part.

You could assemble a group of smart people, give them $100 million, and tell them "Each time I feel happy, each of you will get one more million. Now get to work and start improving my happiness!"

You should, of course, save part of it and fund some research in cryonics. That way you could enjoy your money for a few centuries as opposed to a few decades.

What good is happiness? It can't buy you money.

Also, I would probably make a mass printing press and print billions of dollar bills of all values, and give them away for free all over the country! Also, I would do that for other currencies around the world as well. That way, money would be worthless, and meanwhile I'd have invested in farmland and could grow my own food. Also, society would collapse.

Buy a nice house, get a personal assistant to take care of my day to day shit. Then I would start all the businesses I have dreamed about (under one holding corporation), then I would hire a team of business men, economists, and various other experts (namely in social and political fields) to see how I can invest this money to help bring all of Latin America to the first world and the quality of life in those countries up to the same level as the US and Canada.

I would also start my own lobby group to prevent other lobby groups I don't like from being influential (Fuck you companies that lobby for the three tier system! You go to hell! You go to hell and you die!).

I always wondered about starting a megacorp, with branches in everything from energy to biotech. Improve the world, and get even richer doing it. Expand and repeat. Eventually colonize mars. Work on highly experimental projects like creating wormholes for interstellar travel, a project to bring back dinosaurs, etc.

Well obviously. My wording could have been a lot better, I meant something more along the lines of where the worlds top universities are. The places that have the worlds top universities are statistically going to have a higher concentration of intelligent people than some small town in the middle of nowhere, and high concentration population centers are statistically going to have more intelligent people per square mile for example, because there are just more people per square mile.

Not really, though, of course. I'd hold world economies hostage and force countries to treat citizens with respect. Not that 50 billion dollars is enough to succeed.

I think $50 billion could get you more than two chicks at the same time, if you wanted to try. Even Elliot Spitzer didn't spend that much.
