My sweet ass-gadget

Postby TheTankengine » Sun Jul 08, 2007 4:00 am UTC

This is my new nokia 770 that I got today! i'm posting with it right now, its surprisingly awesome for browsing teh fora. Plus it runs Debian, so its pretty much the best device ever created.

it actually has shell access as well as several hundred programs easily installed and maintained through maemo.org repositories.

Add in the fact that it only cost $130, and I am in love.

What makes you call it an ass-gadget, then?

[quote="TheTankengine"]*awesome device here*[quote]

How does it connect to the internet. Does it have a dataplan through your cell phone carrier or connect via 802.11x (where x is an element of the alphabet) to a home network?

That seems like such a deal for that amount of money... I'm interested... and is it a cellphone?

Does it have a decent keyboard?
For years I have been looking for a device approximately that size, running Linux, featuring a decent keyboard (and a well-lit color screen).

Basically, I want a Psion 5mx with a color screen, no problems with breaking display cables (use some optical link or whatever), and a decent enough processor that it runs Linux! That would be the most awesome device I could imagine at the moment. And it is technically possible. No, I do not need a cell phone built-in (but if you can do it while keeping it affordable, well, i don't mind, I can switch it off). Why does nobody make such a thing?

And can I get it in a store? Because 'm not a huge fan of buying things online.

I thought 802.11x was a protocol for wireless signals, while 2G/EDGE/3G were the actual data plans?

Correct, and I think that's what he's saying. It can connect via WiFi when it's available, and through whatever his phone uses via Bluetooth when it's not (according to Wikipedia).

That said, if you're getting a new one, maybe the N800? It's basically an upgraded version of this.

Oh too bad. They had these on woot.com a while back for $129. I had a hard time convincing myself not to get one.

You can get it from buy.com for $129 / free, sshipping if you use google checkout.

It doesn't connect over cell network directly, just over the bluetooth serial modem on my phone (nokia 5300, excellent phone and i get unlimited data from t-mobile for only $6/month), or 802.11b/g if available.

I actually find the keyboard very easy to use, as well as the rest of the interface. i would definitely recommend the 800, as its basically the same thing with a faster processor and more memory. That is, if you want to spend 3x as much.

gmal:i'd out recursion you, but its not exactly a simple process. it involves my camera phone and a bluetooth transfer and another upload and so on. basically i'm just lazy.

It comes with free shipping?
That. Is. Awesome.

Now all I need is my friggin' credit card!

Edit: Just noticed they only ship within the US. *Is sad*

Only thing id dread about those is the battery life. Also its not exactly a pocket thing... unless you have big pockets, or dont mind the size in your pocket.

well there is 802.1X, but not an 802.11X. 802.1X is pertinent to wireless stuff anyways. Well wireless is one of the more widespread implementations of it.

Actually, the battery life is surprisingly long. Nokia is known for their excellent battery life, and this tablet is no exception. I ran it through a stress test the other day to find out just how long it does last. The entire time it was connected to WiFi and the Bluetooth was turned on. I was streaming music from my desktop the majority of the time, browsing several sites, installing/trying/uninstalling several programs from maemo.org, editing repositories, in short - pretty much everything that can be done with the device.

I was pleasantly surprised to find that it lasted almost 4 hours of near-continuous use.

I also tested the standby, though not fully. Its rated at a very lengthy 7 days. My test consisted of charging it fully, using it for about 30 minutes, then putting the cover on it and letting it sit on my desk for 1.5 days. When the cover is on, it goes into standby mode where the screen and wifi are turned off. When i pulled the cover off, it resumed immediately with a tap on the screen and it still had 4 bars (out of 4) on the battery indicator. That's good enough for me.

And re: the pocket issue. It's really not very large, and is quite slim. It fits very easily in a cargo pocket, and its not too bad in the front pocket of my jeans, though not terribly comfortable. It's only 5.3" x 3.1" x .6" and weighs about a half pound.
