I cannot wait for consistently warm weather so I can traipse around outside in clothing suitable for getting burned in. Also my roommate and I are planning to make full use of the Flesh Pit* when it opens again.

ditto that. I'll never really understand how I got sunburned there either.
I'm glad I'm not alone in that.

Does zinc count? I've zinced my nose on top of sunscreen, because my nose burns the most easily, and ended up with a white strip of skin underneath my eyes and across my nose. And at the swimming carnival, I was drawn on all over. I had a big smiley face burned into my back for ages.

I tan pretty well and don't often burn. I only ever wear sunscreen at the beach, to which I rarely go- Dela does not like the outdoors. The weirdest burn I've ever had was under my eyes (like where you get bags/bruises), where I forgot to apply sunscreen one day. It was very ow.
you may remember me from 2008 or 2009. I left for a while. I'm now sporadically back. I tumble here.

I acquire farmer's tans all the time. Last summer I had an awesome one from the Olympic volunteer polo I wore most days in the August heat. Also I acquired a sexy sexy sock tan at the same time. My only comfort is that I was only one of 100,000 volunteers who wound up looking the same way...

If I had to choose between sunburning the soles of my feet or the roof of my mouth, I'd take the mouth any day. You just need to be careful of what you eat for a day (nothing hot, nothing hard, nothing spicy, nothing salty) and then it's gone -- the mouth heals faster than any other part of the body.

I think I have to agree. And as for mouth healing faster, I can't seem to find a reliable reference (I'm oh-so-slightly inebriated...), but I think all mucous membranes heal faster than non-mucousal membranes (ie, skin).

That's an interesting point - I hadn't thought of that. The idea of sunburn in your mouth is just not very appealing. Does anyone else hate having a burnt tongue or cracked lips or a cut in your mouth? Something about mouth injuries just ... ugh. I got shot up under my mask in a paintball game a while ago, cut my mouth up on the inside, and it was so hard to enjoy eating anything when there's this constant niggling pain. Same thing with eye injuries. They make me a bit nuts.

Woo for farmers tans and sock tans. I get them every summer. I've never been burnt, but then again, the least amount of clothing I wander around in is shorts and t-shirt and I live in the UK, so it's not that suprising.

I have freckles. I tan a tiny bit, on my forarms, and shins, or I did back when I wore shorts.

I try and keep up the habit of wearing sunblock, expecially since I'm currently residing at a high elevation and low latitude (er, closer to the equator). People here over 40 start looking like shoe leather.

Recently, I got some SPF 45 from bath and body works that I like because the texture is different from most sunblocks. Usually I can't hardly stand the way the stuff feels on my face.
...How does sunblock work anyways?

Ever since I got sunburn once I vowed, Never Again, and became obsessive about SPF. I do get a lot of freckles though no matter what I do. The worst are the ones that appear in odd places and look like spots, or, even worse, like old lady liver spots. urk.

I'm half Indian and the very worst thing about it is that I inherited my Mum's English bright pink freckly cheeks, and otherwise a kind of sallow greeny yellow on my forehead and chin. I have never bothered even attempting to find a foundation that works. Likewise, I have blue mottled limbs. Genetics is a bastard eh.

Most of them have Titanium Dioxide, which reacts with skin cells so that the outer membrane, instead of letting UV light through, scatters and reflects it

I don't burn that easily. I mean, I'm pale enough that if I leave my arm on the window for a long time it'll go a little red, but not nearly as bad as most people I know.

While I burn very easily, thankfully the light burns that are my main problem go pretty quickly. Last spring, when we had a really nice week, I managed to sunburn my knees after lying on my back with my knees bent for an hour or so. That was pretty painful and embarrassing, but faded quickly. I've started making a habit of keeping a small tube of sunscreen in my bag once it starts to get nice, and I put it on if I ever start to feel myself burning, if I'm not wearing any already. I suspect summer rowing is going to be interesting for me...as I definitely do not want lines from my lycra, I'll have to make sure I'm good with reapplying, which is my main downfall...

Nope. Neither sunscreen or sunblock react with skin cells; sunblock contains pigments like titanium dioxide or zinc oxide that physically block UV rays from reaching the skin and sunscreen contains chemicals that reflect UV radiation before reaching the skin. There's no interaction with the cell membrane.

I'm pale, as you've seen in my pictures. I get paler. I WILL make it back to my pasty whitest as soon as possible with my bad ass-spf 95 (NINTY FUCKING FIVE) Neutrogena sunblock.

Thanks to Narsil. Until he found this for me, I had only spf 80. AND I can use this stuff on my face without feeling greasy or sweating it off. ^_^ I don't like the sun. I don't like sunburns. I also disapprove of spray tanning, but only because half the girls at my school and job have been orange all winter. wtf? Did I miss the "pumpkin is SO in!" memo?

Iunno. I'm guessing Target since that were he works/ed(?). I haven't run out because I just started using it, but it's expensive and in tiny bottles so I'm going to have to start hunting soon. Possibly The Interwobs? Oops! spf 85, my mistake. Still better than the 80.

I'm pretty sure I read somewhere that anything over SPF 30-35 doesn't actually make any difference...but I'm not sure. I burn easily, but if I just wear spf 8-15, I don't burn, but I end up with a deep tan and a nose full of freckles. I don't really care whether I'm pale or tan, but I hate the ugly tanlines that come with tank tops, halter tops, swimsuits, etc.

I think the idea is that SPF x means you can spend about x times as long in the sun as you could otherwise. So ten minutes without sunscreen equals five hours with SPF 30, or ten hours with SPF 60, and so on. Presumably it's about how much of the radiation actually gets to your skin rather than how long the sunscreen itself lasts, so you'd still have to reapply it every few hours even if the SPF value is ridiculously high.

According to wikipedia (NSFW):
Brazilian waxing refers to a removal of everything, front to back, while sometimes leaving a thin strip of hair on the pubisused by those who wear thong bikinis. An extreme form of bikini waxing, it involves complete removal of hair from the buttocks and adjacent to the anus, perineum and vulva (labia majora and mons pubis). Waxes that remove all of the pubic hair are known as a full Brazilian wax, full Bikini wax, Hollywood wax or the Sphinx.

I find waxing pretty scary. I am glad I have never had a partner who cared enough about body hair to hint they might want me to do these things. Hell, I had a partner who did not want me to shave it at all, just trim sometimes. He was pretty easy to please I must say...
I guess I shave like the "american" or the "french", depending on my mood and time constraints. Or, you know, not at all.

I understand it grow back more slowly when you wax, but my mom said for her hair type that benefit was never really present. Yay for hairy genetics!

I want to get it waxed for the reason that it is suppose to cause it to grow back finer over time. I keep it trimmed because it is more comfortable, but my bikini line is ridiculous after all the years of shaving, it needs help! lol(mmmm cheese) so I want to get it all waxed off with the hopes it would be more comfortable for me.

I am sort of intrigued by the therapist thing. This means there is a specially trained person, and that if you like someone (ie. they are somehow less painful) you can keep seeing them? I see this as a good thing. If I ever get better about personal maintenance I might look into this...

I can never remember what beauty therapists should be properly called, so I default to that. I go to the same salon regularly and have a regular therapist (beautician?) that treats me. There were only two at this salon that do intimate waxing, and the one I saw for a year left, so I'm with the new woman but she seems just as capable and professional. They have training and certificates up on the wall and stuff. But yeah, not having to go to a stranger every time sure is nice.

I don't mind people knowing when I choose to talk to them about it, but that's my choice. I am more comfortable with telling my "girlfriends" and this thread feels like one of them. And really, I keep saying I don't mind men in this thread. And it's not my place to decide.

But I find that when they just chip in they kind of make me feel less safe and comfortable. Like this example; I share it here because it's the woman thread. I find myself wanting to do that less and less. I'm sorry to say, because the guys in question are great people and in no way offensive in what they say, but it feels invasive. Very unrelated. :P

Oh man, I have had some bad experience with beauticians. I think wherever I settle next [or if I stay here?] I'm going to have to find some reliable recommendations. I suck at self-waxing.

My first beautician was always either drunk or hungover when I went to see her. She was very quick, but usually missed large chunks. The lady I see when I'm back home is kick ass - beautician by night, lorry driver by day - but her wax is never quite hot enough and god is it painful. It's a shame because I really like her and feel quite comfortable, it's just never a very good waxing.

Moo - I understand what you're saying. *hug* This thread sometimes requires a whole lot of trust, and sometimes you don't want things up for question.

I've been very lucky with beauticians. A good friend trained as one, and she was pretty gentle. (Even if she did take an unholy amusement at your pain!) Then she married a hairdresser, and they opened their own salon, and a friend of theirs does all beauty related stuff for their salon. And she's lovely. Going to her tomorrow, now I think about it... :D
