Hey, I knew a 'Destanee' once (spelled that exact same way, too!). She had a twin name Triniti. No joke. Oh, worst name I've ever heard: Tearany, pronounced the form of government. Nice girl, terrible, terrible name.

BlueNowhere wrote:I believe a longer, more traditional name can have its benefits too. Take Elizabeth. The girl can then shorten her name to match her personality. Beth, Liz, Lizzie, Eli, etc. I quite like this idea. It would hopefully mean that my kids don't hate me since they have some flexibility with their name.

I endorse this. I'm the seventh or eighth Elizabeth, fourth with it as her first name, and we were all different - and we still have Beth, Liz, and Ellie left over.

I'm really liking some of your suggestions, everyone. Liam, Paul, and Nathaniel are great names for boys.
On the theme of Irish names, I've always loved Ailbhe and Aoibheann.
I'm really surprised no one's mentioned Moon Unit, Dweezil, Ahmet Emuukha Rodan, and Diva Thin Muffin Zappa. Greatest names evar.

Unless you're a family of horrible sentient centipedes; then it's definitely what you'd want to think of. Well, unless horrible sentient centipede babies are half as loud as human ones - then you might want to try to block it out altogether.

Daughter: Agatha, Melanie, Daria, Chloe, Dorothy (I'm serious :()
Son: Robin (Bob for short, obviously), Don (not the extended name), ...

I'm not sure about sons' names. They're harder to choose.

I like Riley. That's a good name. Although personally I'd use it for a girl only. I know it's a unisex name but it just seems/appears more girly to me.

Caroline is also a good name. A childhood friend of mine had that name. That reminds me of Anne, and Hannah, and Martin. More childhood friends of mine.

I haven't even thought about possible choices for middle names. I don't have a middle name. It isn't a custom to give your children a middle name in Germany. Oddly enough both my parents have one though.

I think I'd pick middle names that are from the family. Name them in honor of some family member. :)

Both of my middle names come from my relatives that were killed in the Second World War, one from each side of the family. My great-great-uncle Martin Albert served in the Fallschirmjaeger (paratroopers) and was killed dropping into Crete, and my great-grandpa Andrew Mercer was gassed in the First World War.
So this post actually contributes, I really like "Tomislav" and "Tvrtko."

If I can't get the ridiculous way too old to be taken seriously names to work out, I'm thinking about starting a trend of naming my kids only in palindromes.

Hannah, Anna, Eve...

But are there any decent guys' names? (Note: "Bob" is not decent. Sorry.)

I think that it would be awesome, if you had the surname "Maybell", to name your daughter Michelle.

John Doe: "Hi there, I'm John. John Doe."
Michelle Maybell: "Nice to meet you, I'm Michelle Maybell."
John Doe: "... sont des mots qui vont tres bien ensemble?"

Fix'd.

Also, I'm trying to come up with names for a story I'm writing. I need:

-1 male name for the lead character. He's a skiddish sort of guy.
-Another male name, but only a last name. Nefarious by name, nefarious by nature. Like 'Wesker'.
-At least 3 other names, male and female. No need for last names.
I want to have Mr. Bakerstein's babies. It's possible, with science.

I wonder if you can see...

I would also like Sephiroth, although it'd make a lot of gamers snigger. I'd need to make sure the kid played FFVII early on.

Love that song.

I think people should, in general, have middle names. My dad doesn't and has to go through a lot of crap because of it ("And what's your middle initial?" "I don't have one." "What was that? 'I'?" "No, I don't have one." "...What?"). Sometimes, people even assume NMI (no middle inital) IS his middle name. Really, it's just a tiny bit easier to have one for everyday purposes.

My middle name is my mother's maiden name. Makes things easier to remember, though it's *long* and not-normally spelled. Then again my surname's even weirder (though it's short). My boyfriend doesn't have a middle name. I have no idea what would be a good middle name for him. Hilariously, though, if you put his Confirmation name as his middle name, his initials are 'AAH'. *amused*

Um.... I hate all these names that people give there children from the ghettos and all these people you see on ricky lake, I can imagine working at the registration office to be possibly the hardest thing in the world with all those spellings. My mum is a development community nurse, the amount of baby's with silly names she says, often they get named after celebrity babys, lots of Apples and Phoenixs.

Personally I like the names

Antoinette, Charles and Persephone

But I am changing my surname as I don't want a thing to do with my farther haha so I will get something that sounds nice with those names.

I don't have a middle inital either, the only part of my name my mum chose my farther decided not to put on my birth certificate and I only found out a few years ago when I went to get my birth certificate for my right to work document. But I still use it, and use it proudly!
Please don't correct my spelling, I am lisdexic and know it is probably wrong.

If i ever wind up with a child somehow, it is getting the simplest name i can imagine. And not simple from fifty years ago either.

That's how I ended up being named "marilyn rose". I'm secretly eighty.
Then again, my dad wanted to name me Bronwen. Which was terrifying when i was younger, but seems waaaaay cooler now that i've read Odd Thomas.

Re: Kids names?

Postby Encarnacion » Mon Jan 12, 2009 8:54 am UTC

Most of my ideas for future kids names came from very neat people only slightly older than me, but that were killed through violence or disease in their youth. Call it macabre if you will, but I think it would help honor both the families of the kids and help to give my kids a good start. My parents named me after my sweet but schizophrenic uncle, so I see this as kind of an improvement. I have already promised Rachel Joy Scott's father that this would be done, and liked the name Cassandra Joy, to honor Cassie Bernal as well. However, since there is a high likelihood that my future husband will be Mexican and our children raised in Mexico, I would want this kind of thing to sound ok in Mexican Spanish. But if any of my future children are adopted after they already respond to their own name (which happens in infancy), I'm not renaming them unless they want me to. But, that is if I ever get lucky enough to have kids in the first place.

P.S. I also like the unique-but-not-strange name idea. Every quotationed google search I have ever done of my first and last name has always come up with only things related to me. This might help kids to not be punished for the actions of others who happen to share the same name.

My first born daughter will be Echo. My firstborn son will be Mount, unless my friend has a son before me. Then it will be Johnny. Any twins I have will be Catkin and Teasel, regardless of gender. In a similar vein, London, Blainville, and Mushroom Compost. There will definitely be an Alice and a Mary in there somewhere, if I persuade whoever is bearing my children to name them with slang words for drugs. In terms of slightly more normal names, I like Will, Hunter (who will be raised a vegetarian), Amy (I have so many friends called Amy or Aimee, it is ridiculous), Cara, Tara or Zara.

Middle names would be along the lines of Valentine, Midwinter, or Wormwood, but one of those will be my last name soon, so I'll use the other 2.

I am gonna have soo many kids.

I do adore those books, and Dean Koontz in general, but that's a thread for another forum :P

I'd like my kids to have awesome names, but my surname, and the one of my beloved are dull, and so restrictive (You really can't name a kid something like Cassandra*, or Bronwen*, or Firenze* etc if the last name will be Jones :P I like the names Megan, and Chloe, and Rhiannon. Also, Alexander and Tobias/Toby.

*I've never considered these names, as I haven't considered kid's names in General, they are completley random/nicked off other replies in the thread.

Hehe. Should add Mortimer, even if it's like PIN number.

I'd probably do what my parents did, choose by elimination. Also I'd like to name them after a friend.

That said I have a list:
Boys: Xavier (Zavi), Alexander, Jeremy (Jem), Max (Maxwell or Maximilian, I'm not sure)
Girls: Alexandra, hmmm had more but can't think of them now.

Also have a immature family tradition: I, the eldest, share my father's middle name (also my granddad's first name) and my younger brother share's his with my mum (though the masculine version). Hopefully I'll be able to get the tradition going.

I was in an airport recently (i think it was detroit), and i looked upstairs and noticed the lost and found department. There rested a name plaque that read

"Director of Lost and Found"
Johnny Butler

I jizzed in my pants.

That is such a superstar name. They even put him down as johnny. I hope he is an awesome person.

Also on the way to another, separate, airport I had an hour long conversation with my mom about what to possibly name my kids.

Noah was our top pick for a boy.

I like the name Nora alot (i just saw Nick and Norah's infinite playlist)

Anything that ends in an 'aah' is good.

I would name my kids with j's, but there are already too many in my family (josh jessica jacob)

Estella
Eva

Lilith

I like those ones. Actually for female names I'd probably go Lucia -> Judith -> Lilith.

I actually know a kid in my class named Jazzmyne, pronounced "Jasmine". I pity her. Anyway, not my idea, but my friend Victoria told me that she wants to name her kids Nala, Sarabi, and Vitani. Yes, after the Lion King lionesses. I laughed, but I'm fairly sure she's serious.

Hm...well I'm not going to have kids anytime soon, but I do like some names.
Girl: Chaya, Chloe, and Zoe
Boy: Xander and Jayden

For a girl's middle name I do like Lynn, it sounds good with most things too.
For a boy's middle name I have no clue. I do kinda like the name Zach, but I can't stand Zacharia or such, so maybe Zach would be a good middle name.

Also when naming, a tip. Watch what the initials say. My initials were almost "ASS" I believe, but my mom was smart enough to see that and change the middle name!

I tend to like names that are different, but are not hard to pronounce. I had a friend in high school named Dania (don-ya) but first day of class or substitutes or whatnot, no one ever got her name right. Most people would say "dan-ee-ah". I also like names that are clearly boy or girl. Toni/Tony and the like isn't too bad because the spelling tips you off, but still. Some names don't always have different spellings...hmm...the only example I can think of off the top of my head is I knew two girls in high school named Jesse. So now I automatically think all Jesses are female, I didn't even realize it could be a guy's name until at a rabbit show I met a Jesse who is male.

Re: Kids names?

Postby luketheduke » Mon Jan 12, 2009 11:48 pm UTC

I don't know about the naming scheme yet, but any kid I will name will have several first names. The first one, an unobtrusive, common name; Thomas comes to mind for a boy, or Sandra for a girl; the second name will be one that is androgynous, maybe Alex; then something pompous, like Hieronymus or Helena. If for any reason I should feel particularly geeky, they will get a scientist added (Albert, Nikola, Louis, Marie), and if I feel like crazy geeky, a science fiction protagonist (like Fry, it's only three letters, gotta be able to squeeze it in at the end).

The commonplace first name protects them from ridicule in earlier age; as soon as they know what names mean, they can choose one for themselves at the earliest move to a new social circle.
And they'll have a nice story to tell. Or make up.

("My parents called me Luke, I don't know if it's after the evangelist or after a character from a children's story" just isn't that exciting. Especially as we're not a religious family at all.)

My parents had already decided on Adam for my first name, but also really wanted to be able to call me 'Ty'. My dad was a history major.

I was -this close- to having Tiberius as my middle name.

I think there's a website for that.

If there wasn't, there is now.

I've always like the name Kaylee for a girl. Or Xiera (Zee-air-ah). I don't know what I would name a boy.

Not having kids for a long time, though.

I can see substitute teachers struggling with that.

My parents gave me a last name as a first name. If "Thomas" also counts as a last name, I have three last names.

Orion. Orion Swan.

see, swan works cause it's an old family name. but orion swan sounds just suPREMELY badass. and during the time he doesn't think having the name Orion Swan is suPREMELY badass, he doesn't have to tell his friends that his middle name is swan.

dunno about girls names though. moon unit?
Midnight. A pretty cool guy. Eh posts on xkcd and doesn't afraid of fear itself.

I want to have kids just to name them. I'm pretty sure this makes me a bad person, since I probably won't like them after the novelty of naming them has worn off.
Girls' names I like: Lisette, Colette, or Juliette, with Angelique, Elisabeth or Gabrielle as a middle name
Boys' names: Tobias and, if I have a second boy, Adrian, with Isaiah or James as middle names.
My husband had better have a French name, or he'll be feeling really left out. Especially since if the girls get French names, they're taking my last name.
...that's awkward.

I'm enjoying the swing between normal-ish and exotic names I'm seeing here. I think my faves so far from the contributions are polly's "Echo" - I adore girls' names that begin with "E", as you'll see in a moment - and Sarah's "Gideon." I have a novel in the works whose protagonist is named Gideon, so I'm a bit attached to the moniker.

My (actual) children's names:
Canaan Lucas
Eos Inara
Eden Isabella

If (the gods forbid) I ever had another child, and if it were a son, I would name him Søren Marcus.
