Just a quick PSA.

A bunch of people are talking about Japanese themes in their Tattoo ideas.
If you actually plan on traveling to Japan be warned that there is a social stigma relating to Tattoos.
If you have one you are assumed to be related to organized crime.

Some businesses do not even allow entry to people with tattoos (which I am told is perfectly legal) and at the very least you will be sending the wrong message to everyone you meet.

If you do have a tattoo and come to Japan try to keep it cover in public and you will have a much more enjoyable experience!

The more you know...

PS: I've never really understood the appeal of tattoos or piercings and thus don't have any.

I'm getting a new tattoo later today.
It's going to be on my left upper arm and shoulder. It's a celtic knot merging into a rose and a thistle (I'm English and my wife is Scottish). I'll post a pic later with the progress (likely to take a couple of sessions to finish)

I understand why people don't like tattoos and it's difficult to explain what it is that I like about them, but a good tattoo is more than just body art...

Edit: 1st session over, this is just the outline. Next session to do the thicker lines and start the colouring in...

Hmm..well, here are mine...
I have "So it goes. " on my shoulder blade area.... an allusion to slaughterhouse 5.
The morton salt girl releasing birds going up my back...actually was a bit of street art that I fell in love with on the side of a building in Houston...
...and "Oh, what a beautiful night for the poor world..." on my hip, a line from my favorite piece of music, "Danse Macabre" by Saint-Saens....it's usually played as a symphonic piece but there was a poem set to it when it was first written, essentially about the dead coming to life...

So I've narrowed down the designs, but I'm having a hard time choosing between my top three. One of these will go on my right shoulder, just below the collarbone and above the pecs.

You math people make me so angry. You've got your own language to pull all kinds of symbols from, and they all have some inherent meaning to you... :?

But seriously, I think I'm going to get a quote from Macbeth on my left shoulder:

I dare do all that may become a man;
Who dares do more, is none.

And this quote from V for Vendetta on my right shoulder:

Justice is meaningless without freedom.

Lest we forget. :)

Funny you should say that. It's actually been something that's been bugging me recently. I was looking for something, but I keep finding symbols which technically mean "strength" or "love" or whatever, but they don't really mean it to me. Like... if I believed in it, it would mean something. And, the same with some of the math symbols, because I find they mean something, but not the something that I could find reassuring to put on me.

Damn, being without a belief structure, and not really enjoying math anymore is making things hard :P

Well, it's pretty obvious:

There are two, mirrored images facing one another (i.e., two members of the same gender).

And the nesting dragon would mean something like...sex? Between two people of the same gender? I find it hard to believe that two people of the same gender can have children. Perhaps that's how procreation works in Morrowind...

So yeah, the symbolism's there.

I've wanted more tattooage since about 5 minutes after I got my first one done. I have vague impressions of a large tattoo I would want on my back but the trouble is I've never seen pictures exactly like what I have in mind and I'm a terrible excuse for an artist. What's the best way to work out an actual design for something like that? I always worry that if I ask an artist of some description to sit down with me and try to sketch out what I have in mind I'll either have to pay them a lot of money to put up with me going 'mmmmmm that's close but not quite....' for a long time or I'll just end up annoying the crap out of them. Suggestions?

Ive decided on a second tattoo (for after I get my first. If you read back several pages it's the celtic tree of lovers). My second tattoo would be a barcode. I know it's kind of tacky, especially when done on the neck, but get this. Blacklight ink. Left forearm. Epic tattoo.

if you can't draw...then your best bet is to find someone who can....most tattoo artists can draw very well...and they can draw your idea in a "tattooable" way (most shitty tattoos come about because of 2 events: 1- the person who's getting the tattoo has an idea and some insane drawing of a really cool idea....but it's not tattooable and they're entirely too hung up on it being EXACTLY like the drawing 2- the tattoo artist doesn't tell the person their nuts and refuse to do the tattoo exactly by the source art)...so that's your best bet...any artist worth their salt won't charge you for the drawing part of it...they may charge you more for the tattoo since its custom art work...but they USUALLY don't charge for the drawing process (if they do...you may want to shop around)

the most important part of custom art work with regards to tattooing is that you CANNOT be stubborn about what you want (within reason)....when the artist tells you that they can do it...but it will look like crap....trust them...they're the ones who know what they're doing (and they also know their skill level...or should)...too many people come up with these ideas that they think are the bees knees...and on paper it may look cool...but once it's inked it looks like pure shit because tattooing is nothing like painting or drawing on paper/canvas

My math teacher was always telling us to get equations tattooed on our bodies. Her favorites to mention were the quadratic equation, and sin2θ + cos2θ = 1.

If I ever get a tattoo for some reason, it will probably be the second. Considering it took me fifteen minutes of searching to remember if it was + or -.

I think I'd like to get an armband tattoo, on my wrist (wristband?), comprised of one sentence, preferably in a neat, somewhat refined-looking font. (You know the space between two lines on college-ruled notebook paper? That size.) I quite seriously doubt that this is a new idea, but it struck me as pretty fantastic when I first thought of it.

Ideas:
-A facinating or significant word (nothing pretty-sounding) and it's definition.
(So it would read as: "<Word> means <definition>." Or, alternately, this format, but in a single line. If I'm going to include multiple definitions, however, I'll need to decrease the print size. Or increase my wrist size. (Attainable, because the wrist in question is currently minuscule.)
-A quote from a favorite book.
-Any meaningless phrase (i.e: I went to the grocery store yesterday.), if all else fails. Then the prospective reader might over-analyze it, imagining really profound and mystical meanings. Which I would like.

Issues:
-I'm not certain whether it should be directed away from or towards me. Also, wrists: I have two of them, funnily enough. Dexterous or non-dexterous?
-Theoretically, it would be pretty susceptible to stretching/generally looking crappy if/when I gain weight.

Input?

Incidentally, Google kindly presented me with this image, which is insanely useful. I now know the approximate number of characters allowed by each font size, assuming I used Times New Roman. When printed, the lines of print are actually within 1/4 inch of the circumference of my wrist, which is eerily convenient.

Edit: Possibly "Intellectual growth should commence at birth and cease only at death.", a quotation of Einstein.

Thank you. Seriously, that helps like crazy. My tattoo's purpose would most definitely be the former. I actually would prefer to see my tattoo upside-down, which complicates things slightly, but I understand what you mean.

I've been thinking that a tattoo is the next major expense i'll save up for (well, except for a nice high spec mac-book.). I really, really like the idea of having tree rings up my upper thigh, for every year i'm alive. A bit like this.

They would have to be quite stylised tree rings (but not so much that they end up looking like a bar code), so that they don't bleed into each other as the tattoo ages.

the direction is personal (IMO)....the two tattoos on my wrists are "technically" (according to standard tattoo methodology) the wrong way round....but those two tattoos are for me...not for anyone else...and not for show...they mean something to ME....so i prefer for them to be right side up when I look at them...i could give a crap about other people being able to see them correctly....in contrast to the one on my forearm of the boat....which is "right side up" (in standard tattoo methods)...that one is for other people to see...i want to show them my grandfather...so that one is facing away from me...

so the point comes to....is the tattoo for you to read and remember and get something out of? or is it something to show other people....to give them a message...or to weird them out with randomness

As others have said, the Vonnegut is awesome.

Right now, though, I'd like to tell you how much I love the line, "Oh, what a beautiful night for the poor world." It caught my fancy, so of course I had to go look up the poem, which was beautiful. It adds an entirely new dimension to the music (also one of my favorite songs). Equality in death and in love (or lust), a message pieced together up in a whirl of dance and music...
That just struck a chord, is all. Thank you. =)

Many of you might notice that the image below is a blown-up version of my avatar image. This is my one tattoo idea that I've sorta been dreaming about for the better part of five years. If I end up getting it, I'd like it only in black, preferably on one of my arms. I told this to one of my friends, and they felt like it was a bit too cliche. While I think he was likely just talking out of his ass, it has got me second-guessing myself. Is there any truth to his argument?

Another concern was with the size. As I want to get this on my upper arm (since I am expected to wear a suit, or at least decent short-sleeved shirts), I need it big enough to be visible, and clear, but small enough for it not to wrap around my bicep. Since I'm a pretty skinny guy, do I need to worry about maybe adding some "bulk" before doing this?

That's a really cool tattoo! Is it your family crest/coat of arms? What meaning does it have to you? I'm absolutely fascinated by my family's heritage; my dad's last name is a Scottish clan and I love our crest and motto. I think it would be one of the better tattoos to get. Yours seems much too personalized to be cliche and I don't see many people with tattoo designs like that. I tend to have the opinion that almost any tattoo is not cliche, with only a few exceptions: (1) barbed wire, (2) hearts, (3) elaborate flowery patterns or designs immediately above a girl's butt (rudely termed "tramp stamps"). But even these cliched tattoos can be done well.

Personally I would recommend against bulking up just for a tattoo. Are you planning on working out for the rest of your life? What's going to happen to the tattoo if you work out at first and get big biceps, then you stop working out? I think you should either pick a size that is visible but won't be affected by your physical characteristics, or you should pick another place. What about over your heart, or at least on the left side of your chest under your collarbone? It's a much less stretchy, saggy area, and will still be hidden by clothes when you want to look professional. And unless you get absolutely HUGE, steroid-induced pecs, there will probably be little to no stretching.

Coats of arms are a particularly popular tattoo choice.
