Sound Card issues

Postby MooglesLord » Sat Nov 07, 2009 5:58 am UTC

So I recently accquired an HP Pavillion 540n desktop that I fixed up for my little sister a few days ago. So far it's been great, except for one little problem. No matter what I do, I Cannot, CANNOT get the audio driver to work. Could anyone with google-fu point me in the right direction? HP's site has no sound card drivers listed at all, there's no recovery partition to pull drivers from, and the few links I Have managed to find have either been broken, or just not working. I've tried one of the SIS drivers for the mobo as well as the AC97 drivers, with no dice.

As a last resort, there's a PCI audio card that I can throw in this desktop long enough for windows 7 to try and tell me what it is, before downloading win xp pro drivers, and installing them on my sister's computer. I'd really rather not do that though.

Thanks in advance!

You can get very specific. Or, get both XP audio drivers, and try each.

If the XP install is old, you may be better off reloading it.

Device Manager > yoursoundcard > Properties > Details and under either 'Device Instance ID' or 'Hardware ID' there is a VEN string followed by a DEV string (Vendor and device). Go to www.pcidatabase.com and plug in the dev string and it will tell you who actually manufactures the card and what model it is, then you can go directly to the support website for the maker.

Fuck HP, I've had this exact same problem with them several times. I swore never to buy another one and to warn as many people away from them as possible after I couldn't find drivers for my brother's newly formatted computer. It's ridiculous that they don't support their own hardware.

Thanks for the advice guys. Followed everything and STILL couldn't get the godforsaken sound card to work. I ended up writing down the hardware ID's on a PCI sound card and a Video card I swapped in, and finding those drivers instead. So now my sis finally has working sound/video, and I can have a bit of peace and quiet tonight ^^
